comScore released its Q4 2008 retail e-commerce sales estimates, which showed that online retail spending declined 3 percent versus year ago, the first recorded quarter of negative growth since comScore began tracking e-commerce spending in 2001. Nonetheless, for the full year 2008, retail e-commerce grew 6 percent to $130.1 billion, but representing a substantially lower growth rate than in previous years.

“The fourth quarter rounded out what was a particularly challenging year for online retailers,” said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. “The financial market meltdown that began in the fall dramatically reduced consumers’ discretionary spending power, resulting in the first quarter of negative growth that we’ve observed. As we enter 2009 with rising unemployment and continued economic uncertainty, the first few months of the year will be especially critical in foretelling what 2009 has in store for the online retail sector.”

Retail E-Commerce Quarterly Growth Rates Slip Throughout 2008

A review of quarterly retail e-commerce growth rates depicts the slowdown in the U.S. retail economy during the past two years. Throughout much of 2007, quarterly growth rates remained in the vicinity of 20 percent. However, beginning with Q1 2008 the growth rates began to de-accelerate, culminating in a 3-percent decline in the final quarter of 2008.

Video Games Ranks as Top Growing Online Retail Category in 2008

The fastest-growing retail category in 2008 was video games, consoles & accessories (up 29 percent vs. 2007), which continued to benefit from online sales of popular game consoles like the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3. Other fast-growing categories included home, garden & furniture (up 25 percent) and sport & fitness (up 25 percent), both of which benefitted from an increasing consumer willingness to complete major consumer purchases, such as furniture and home exercise equipment, online. Two of the largest online retail categories, consumer electronics (up 9 percent) and apparel & accessories (up 4 percent) both managed to grow positively in 2008, while several other categories were not as fortunate.

Online videókat hogyan fedeznek fel az internetezők Amerikában? - 2009 február

Az internetezők 45 százaléka leggyakrabban közvetlenül a videómegosztókon kutat megnézendő videók után. A hivatkozásokat tekintve 81 százalék blogokban elhelyezett linkekről érkezik a videós honlapokra. A keresők részesedése 11 százalék Amerikában.

People discover videos online in a variety of ways, from embeds on blogs to video search engines. But which sources drive the most video views? Our recent acquisition of TubeMogul InPlay, which tracks rich video statistics, allows us to answer that question.

Methodology

For a two-month period, we recorded inbound URLs for a sample of 35,528,837 video streams from six top video sites (due to partnership limitations, we cannot disclose which sites). For instance, if someone executed a Google text search and clicked on a link to a video, we recorded that inbound link as coming from Google. Views from embedded videos were also included in the sample.

Results

The most common way viewers find a video (45.13% of all views our sample) is direct navigation to a video site (i.e. going to YouTube and running a search or clicking around the featured or related videos).

In terms of sites referring traffic, no single source dominates, with a variegated long tail of mostly blogs sourcing 80.88% of all referred traffic in our sample. Here are the top 20 individual referrers:

Since there were millions of referring sites in our sample, manually compiling a full breakdown by category was untenable. However, since there are a limited number of players in certain sectors, we were able to infer the following breakdown of share of referral traffic by category:
  • Search engines: 11.18%

  • Social networks: 3.66%

  • Social bookmarking sites: 3.19%

  • Video search engines: 0.63%

  • Email/IM: 0.05%

  • Everything else (almost all blogs, from the thousands we scanned): 80.88% of all referred traffic.
Analysis/Conclusions

These results likely come as bad news to the myriad sites that are set up with online video discovery in mind, such as video search engines, which source a relatively modest 0.63% of all referred video views.

To those trying to unlock a formula for making a video go viral, perhaps this gives some clues: reach out to bloggers and optimize a video's meta-data to ensure it ranks highly on intra-video site plugs.

Facebook 45 millió aktív tag Amerikában - 2009 február

  • 45,3 millió aktív egyesült államokbeli Facebook tag 2009 február elején,
  • A tagok száma minden életkorban és mindkét nemnél növekszik, a leggyorsabb a növekedés a nőknél,
  • Az amerikai tagok 45 százaléka 25 évesnél idősebb
Key Highlights
  • Facebook reporting nearly 45.3 million active US users in the last 30 days

  • Facebook growing in every age/gender demographic. Fastest growing segment: Women over 55, up 175.3% in the last 120 days.

  • Facebook growing faster with women than men in almost every age group. Women comprise 56.2% of Facebook’s audience, up from 54.3% late last year.

  • 45% of Facebook’s US audience is now 26 years old or older.
Facebook US Audience Growth by Age and Gender

Facebook’s US audience has continued to grow in recent months, fueled by expansion primarily in users 26 and older. Facebook has been growing particularly rapidly amongst people over 45 in the US, as the charts show below: over 165% amongst both men and women 45-54 over the last 4 months.

While the fastest growing age group by total users is still 26-34, the number of women over 55 on Facebook grew by an astounding 175.3% since the end of September. Their male counterparts, however, weren’t able to keep up - growing by only 137.8%. The number of women over 55 on Facebook almost double the number of men over 55 on Facebook today.

Facebook US Audience by Age and Gender

Overall, women now outnumber men in every age group on Facebook. In total, women now make up about 56.2% of Facebook’s US audience, up from 54.3% late last year. Women most outnumber men in the 18-25 and 26-34 age groups, where there are 1.4 females for every 1 male on Facebook.

Facebook US Audience by Age

Overall, 45% of Facebook’s 45.3 million active users in the US is now 26 years old or older. Nearly a quarter of all Facebook users are over 35 today - quite a change from Facebook’s roots as a social networking tool for college students just a few years ago.

Teenagers now make up about 12% of the overall Facebook audience. Facebook does not publish any data on users under 13, because the terms of service requires all users be at least 13 years old to join.
