Nielsen - A mobilosok harmada szerez információkat készülékén vásárlás előtt, 2016. október

Magyarországon is átalakul a kereskedelem annak következtében,  hogy a fogyasztók egyre több célra használják mobil készülékeiket: Minden harmadik magyar mobil tulajdonos össze szokta hasonlítani különböző kereskedők árait.

A bankolás terjedését mobil eszközökkel első sorban a biztonsággal kapcsolatos aggályok gátolják, a globális válaszadók átlag 53 százaléka szemében. Inkább szeret személyesen felkeresni egy bankfiókot 31 százalék.

„Élelmiszer, víz és levegő nélkülözhetetlen az élethez. De mobil eszközök…?” – fogalmaz a felmérés eredményeivel kapcsolatban a Nielsen jelentése.

The results of the Second Annual Benchmark Survey on Consumer Coupon Behavior commissioned by RetailMeNot.com, the web's leading consumer destination for coupons, discounts and promotional codes for merchandise, groceries, travel and services, and conducted by Harris Interactive, were released today. The survey found that the use of coupon websites is on the rise, most notably among the highest education and income brackets. In addition, the survey found that coupons are the deciding factor in the purchases of a growing number of consumers. The survey, which polled 2,175 online adults 18+ within the United States, measured trends in online shopping and coupon usage.

The survey found that consumers are continuing to spend less in the current economy. Nearly half of online adults (45%) plan to spend less money on gifts this holiday season compared to last holiday season, the same percentage as in 2008, indicating a consistent, significant downward trend in spending. To save money, 62% of online adults look for coupons for online stores, and 12% never make a purchase without checking an online coupon website first, a notable jump from 8% last year.

"Consumers are more aware of their spending than ever and are very active in trying to find the best deals. Coupon websites are still growing rapidly in popularity, with nearly two-thirds of consumers checking for coupons when they shop online," said Guy King, co-founder of RetailMeNot.com. "As a result, we are seeing more and more merchants embracing coupons as a way to connect with their budget-conscious shoppers. Clearly, retailers that don't offer discounts not only jeopardize customer loyalty but could take a significant hit to the bottom line, especially as we head into the holiday season."

Among the key findings, the survey revealed that in the current economic environment, coupon use is on the rise across nearly all demographics, but is highest among the employed and educated (college graduated):
  • 29% of college graduates use coupon websites to find good deals, compared to 24% of those with some college and 20% of those with an education level of high school or less; in 2008, these numbers were 23%, 20% and 20% respectively

  • 27% of online adults that work full time or are self-employed use coupon websites (up from 22%); 22% of online adults that are unemployed use coupon websites (up from 18%); 25% of students use coupon websites (up from 23%); 18% of retired online adults use coupon websites (up from 14%)
Consumers are increasingly defining their spending habits by whether or not retailers offer coupons:
  • 30% of online adults will not make a purchase at an online store if they can't find a coupon for that store, up from 27% in 2008

  • 22% of online adults will go to a different store to make that purchase, up from 20% in 2008, while 8% will wait until a coupon is available to make the purchase (same in 2008)
Large families and homes with children are also one of the fastest growing demographics to use coupon websites:
  • 30% of online adults in households with children use coupon websites (up from 24% in 2008); only 22% of online adults in households with no children use coupon websites (up from 20%)

  • 31% of online adults in households of five or more use coupons (up from 15%); only 15% of online adults that live alone use coupon websites (down from 17%)
Additional findings include:
  • 40% of online adults who use tools or websites to find good deals when shopping online in the Midwest use coupon websites, compared to 35% in the Northeast, 34% in the South and 29% in the West

  • The largest age group to use coupon websites is 35-44, with 41% of these online adults who use tools or websites to find good deals when shopping online, including 47% of these women and 34% of these men, using coupon websites

  • Married online adults who use tools or websites to find good deals when shopping online, are significantly more likely to use coupon websites, at 39% compared to 29% of these single or never married online adults and 21% of these divorced online adults.

comScore, a leader in measuring the digital world, released its Q3 2009 retail e-commerce sales estimates, which showed that U.S. online retail spending totaled $29.6 billion, down 2 percent versus year ago. Q3 2009 represents the first time on record that consecutive quarters have seen negative e-commerce spending growth compared with the same quarter the year prior.

“The third quarter showed negative marginal growth for the second consecutive quarter – the first time on record we’ve witnessed sustained dips in U.S. e-commerce spending, small though the declines may be,” said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. “The good news is that these declines may finally be in our rear view mirror, as we anticipate marginally positive growth for the fourth quarter. With retailers gearing up for the online holiday shopping bonanza, and a fourth quarter that will include easier comparisons against year ago, we are hopeful that this Christmas season will be merrier than the last.”

Free Shipping a Must-Have Incentive for Retailers in 2009 Holiday Season

Over the past few years, free shipping has become a particularly critical incentive for stimulating online purchase behavior, and its importance has increased considerably during the recent economic downturn. The past several quarters have seen the percentage of e-commerce sales transactions including free shipping increase from 31 percent in Q1 2008 to 42 percent in Q3 2009.

“Free shipping has become an increasingly essential promotion in the e-commerce marketer’s toolkit,” added Mr. Fulgoni. “With more than 40 percent of all e-commerce transactions now including free shipping, it’s clear that consumers respond favorably to this incentive and in many cases have come to expect it from retailers. The retailers who do not offer free shipping deals this holiday season may find themselves at a significant disadvantage versus those who do.”

Amazon No. 1. kiskereskedelmi márka Németországban - 2009. június

Az Amazon a legerősebb kiskereskedelmi márka Németországban 2009-ben. 8,32 értéket ért el a 0 és 10 közötti skálán. Előző évben fel sem került a 60 kereskedelmi láncot tartalmazó listára.

  • Verfehlte Unternehmenspolitik belastet Marken nachhaltig

  • Erfolgreiche Wettbewerbsdifferenzierung erfordert konsequentes Eigenmarkenmanagement.

I. negyedévben Amerikában az egy évvel korábbi azonos időszakhoz viszonyítva. Az előző, 2008. IV. negyedévben bekövetkezett 3 százalékos csökkenés után.

comScore released its Q1 2009 retail e-commerce sales estimates, which showed that online retail spending remained flat versus year ago.

“Although online retail spending growth was flat in the first quarter, this does represent a slight improvement over the disappointing fourth quarter,” said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. “These results would appear to indicate that the economy is finally exhibiting some signs of stability, and with consumer confidence beginning to improve, I’m optimistic that the online channel is poised for a return to positive growth in the second half of 2009.”

Fastest Growing Product Categories in Q1 2009

The fastest-growing category in Q1 2009 was Sport & Fitness, which continues to grow as consumers demonstrate a willingness to purchase major fitness equipment, such as treadmills and stationary bikes, online. Books & Magazines grew 19 percent, followed by Video Games, Consoles & Accessories (12 percent) and Computer Software (12 percent).

The welcome email is probably the single greatest opportunity that email marketers have to engage subscribers and drive action. Welcome messages generate superior open rates, arriving ideally at a time of maximum receptivity. And done well, they create a halo effect that boosts subscribers’ engagement with subsequent promotional and trigger emails.

Given the golden opportunity that welcome emails present marketers, it’s unfortunate that so many still let the moment pass—or bungle the interaction with uninspired messaging. After examining the welcome email practices of 112 of the largest online retailers, Smith-Harmon found that only 76% of the retailers sent out welcome emails. While that’s up from 72% in 2007 and 66% in 2006, it’s disheartening that more companies aren’t seizing this key marketing moment.

“The very first step in any email program is to acquire names to send your message to, but often in that process, we fail to set solid expectations on what the subscriber has really just agreed to receive,” says Stefan Pollard, senior strategic consultant with email service provider Responsys, which partnered with us on this study.

“This gap is where the welcome email shines in its importance to start that new relationship with a wealth of information that the sign-up process may not have had time to communicate. More than simply confirming that an action has been taken, the welcome email is the first chance you have to engage your new subscriber and provide immediate value from your email program.”

We found plenty of opportunities for improvement, as some retailers didn’t make the strongest first impressions. For instance, 23% of retailers took more than 24 hours to deliver their welcome emails, greatly diminishing their effectiveness.

Others didn’t take advantage of their welcome emails to set expectations and drive engagement and sales. For example, only 76% explained the benefits of being a subscriber and only 87% included a link to their homepage.

Many retailers also failed to use their welcome email for progressive profiling, asking subscribers for more information about themselves and their interests to boost the relevancy of future emails. Only 24% of retailers did this, down from 28% in 2006.

“Creating welcome series rather than a having a single welcome email is also a growing trend,” says Aaron Smith, co-founder and principal at Smith-Harmon. “Our awardwinning work on REI’s year-long welcome series for new co-op members proves that these can be very effective at driving long-term engagement.” At least 9% of retailers are currently using welcome series of two or more emails.

Other key findings from the study include:
  • Text-only welcome emails are becoming increasingly antiquated. More than 89% of retailers sent HTML welcome emails, up from 78% in 2007 and 69% in 2006.

  • The role that welcome emails can play in ensuring future deliverability of emails is growing. More than 68% of retailers used welcome emails to ask new subscribers to add the sender address to their address book, up from about 62% in 2007 and 49% in 2006.

  • The number of top online retailers making their emails CAN-SPAM compliant rose significantly. Nearly 71% included both an unsubscribe link and their mailing address, up from 58% in 2007 and 52% in 2006.

  • While 15% of welcome emails include a forward-to-a-friend link, none of those studied included a share-with-your-network (SWYN) link. We expect many marketers to adopt SWYN this year, including adding it to their welcome emails.

In particular, we see growing broadband penetration as a catalyst for more robust commercial Internet activity. As such, we believe the continuing increase in broadband uptake, as well as increases in connection speeds, provide a tailwind for growth at Internet companies.

More specifically to eCommerce, we believe the growth of online retail is closely related to increasing broadband penetration; the growth trajectories have closely paralleled each other over the past several years.

As such, we think continued increases in broadband penetration will be a catalyst for eCommerce continuing to take share away from overall retail sales going forward, providing opportunities for growth even if retail sales as a whole stagnate.

The Internet Is More and More a Performance-driven Model

Over the last five years, performance-based advertising has gained market share over the CPM-based model. This trend is most clearly seen in the U.K., where the online ad market is more mature (~15% of ad dollars are spent online compared to only ~8% in the U.S.). In the U.K. market, we think roughly 85% of total online ad dollars are spent on the performance-based model.

We think this trend will not only continue but accelerate in this recessionary environment. We have seen advertisers place higher value on clear ROIs. As such, we believe the shift to performance-based models is only going to accelerate. In 2009, we think the display advertising market will be very tough and faced with declining CPMs. Search will likely still be a winner.

The Online Video Strategy Does Not Appear to Be Working

Although online video usage is a large and rapidly growing medium, no suitable advertising platform has been developed, in our view. Performance-based marketers who are primarily focused on a measurable return on investment have likely been alienated by the cost-per-thousand (CPM) model rather than the CTR models (including cost-per-click or cost-per-action based display). Even brand advertisers have been mostly unattracted to this platform. We think this is due to the inability to guarantee viewership for any specific video the way television does in the upfront model. Often, it is very unpredictable as to which video will be popular.

Furthermore, content quality is inconsistent with many video sites plagued with videos of varying quality and copyright violations. As a result, we do not see a highly profitable advertising model solution for online video publishers in the near term.

Net Neutrality Will Become a More Important Public Issue

Recently, the WSJ reported that Google is in discussions with telco and cable companies to establish a potential alliance to ensure high speed delivery services for Google content. Google responded by clarifying that the company remains a very strong proponent of Net Neutrality and is simply looking to upgrade its network through edge caching, which allows for the temporary storage of frequently accessed data on local servers. Edge caching is a common practice used by ISPs and application and content providers in order to improve the end user experience. The WSJ article also reported that Microsoft and Yahoo! have quietly removed themselves from the Net Neutrality alliances.

We think the Net Neutrality debate will move more to the forefront of mainstream discussions in 2009. In our opinion, Net Neutrality is essential for the Internet industry and the openness it offers.
  • Consumers want faster service. Our checks with industry insiders show that speed is one of the most critical contributors of market share gain or loss. If companies are able to sign exclusive partnerships with telcos and operators, it will likely reduce competition. It will also make it difficult for early stage companies to succeed, thus reducing the innovation that has fueled economic growth and created hundreds of thousands of jobs over the last decade.

  • Large companies already have a speed advantage over smaller companies. For example, we think Google’s data center investments have given it a large advantage over other search engines, which has led to market share gains. As such, creating additional partnerships will likely only hurt small business formation, which is very key to the success of the U.S. economy, in our opinion.

  • There is a risk larger companies will get preferential pricing. In a sense, preferential pricing is not different than the issue that the oil industry faced in the early 1900s. Using its large and growing volume of oil shipments, Standard Oil negotiated an alliance with the railroads that gave it secret rebates and thereby reduced its effective shipping costs to a level far below the rates charged to its competitors. In 1911, the Supreme Court found Standard Oil Company of New Jersey in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act because of its excessive restrictions on trade, particularly its practice of eliminating its competitors by buying them out directly or driving them out of business by temporarily slashing prices in a given region.

  • We are sympathetic to the telco and cable companies’ overhead. We recognize that they have to invest heavily in infrastructure to support Internet access. However, we would prefer to see tiered pricing for broadband access over differential treatment of Internet content.
Ultimately, we think it will be extremely negative for the industry as a whole if Internet openness is not protected.

Social Networking Needs a New Monetization Approach

We do not believe social networks can drive sufficient revenue from an ad-based model to grow profits. We do not expect broad adoption of advertising on social networking sites by large advertisers, and we think that, to the extent advertising takes hold on social networking sites, it will more frequently be in the form of performance-driven ads than display.

We believe the near to medium term presents several significant challenges to the adbased
revenue model for social networks that will prevent these sites from reaching
their valuation expectations:
  • Ad spending forecast looks weak. In a weak ad market, with allocations declining to a variety of existing media, we think adding another experimental ad channel could prove difficult.

  • Large advertisers may be put off by environment. We continue to believe adoption could be particularly slow among traditional advertisers, which may not want to advertise their brand alongside content they can’t fully control.

  • Advertising on social networks can be complicated. Successful advertising on these sites involves more than just an incremental extension of existing campaigns. Some advertisers end up pulling back after an initial lack of success, while others are reluctant to add yet another wrinkle to their marketing approach.
Given the above challenges, we think revenue at social networks will need to come from sources other than display advertising. We see several possibilities, not all of which can apply to each network:
  • More performance-based advertising models, such as CPA ads or lead generation;

  • Sales of virtual goods, which can further the depth of the user experience on a social site;

  • A model that exposes a site to the classifieds or eCommerce markets, both of which are gaining market share from their offline counterparts; and

  • Paid premium memberships or selling a la carte paid features (such as the ability to post more or higher-quality photos).
Several sites are already pursuing a variety of these approaches (both LinkedIn and
Classmates, e.g., sell premium memberships). We expect much more
experimentation as the market continues to mature.

Retail Email Index 2008 Reading

2008 saw record email volumes from retailers, as measured by the Retail Email Index, which is a measure of the promotion email volume generated by the top 100 online retailers. Nearly every weekend you can see a trailing-12-weeks reading of the Index in the Week-End Trends posts on the Retail Email Blog, but to give you a better idea of how retail email volumes varied over the course of the year, here’s a 54-week chart that encompasses all of 2008:

Annual and Monthly Average Retail Email Volumes

During 2008, the retailers tracked by the Retail Email Blog sent an average of 117 emails each, averaging a monthly send volume of 9.8 emails and a weekly send volume of 2.3 emails. During the first three quarters of the year, retailers sent 9.0 emails each month on average; but during the fourth quarter averaged 12.1 emails. Here’s how the email volume breaks down on a monthly basis:

Retail Email Day of the Week Popularity

Over the course of 2008, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday proved to be consistently the most popular days to send retail emails, while Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday proved to be consistently the least popular days. Friday was in the middle of the pack, weaker during the first half of the year, but then coming on much stronger in the fourth quarter.

And below is a chart of the popularity of each day of the week during the year. Keep in mind that the popularity of a day during a given week is highly influenced by the timing of holidays and their corresponding standard shipping deadlines.

The 20 Most Popular Retail Email Days of 2008

Given the importance of holiday spending to retailers, it’s no surprise that the vast majority of the biggest retail email days of the year come in December and November—in fact, 19 of the top 20 fall during those two months. Top days include Cyber Monday (Dec. 1), which held onto the No. 1 spot for the second year in a row, and the day after Christmas, which held onto the No. 3 spot for the second year in a row. (For more on Cyber Monday retail email activity, check out Cyber Monday Sees Record Retail Email Volume.)

Outside of the holiday season, only Sept. 16 cracked the top 20. That day doesn’t appear to correlate to any seasonal action, but it was around the time that the economy and stock market began to falter, so retailers may have been reacting to that or to inventory build-ups caused by it.

During 2007, tax day (April 17) and Aug. 14 (in the heart of the back-to-school season) made the
list.

Here’s a full listing of the top 20 retail email days of 2008:

Relative Popularity of Retail Email Selling Seasons

Behind Christmas—which dwarfs everything else—the biggest retail email selling seasons during 2008 were the back-to-school season, Mother’s Day, Halloween and Father’s Day. The following chart ranks all 25 selling seasons tracked by the Retail Email Blog according to how much attention they get from retail email marketers:

A few year-over-year movements are worth noting. First, Breast Cancer Awareness Month fell from the 13th spot in 2007 to No. 17 last year. Retailers that I’ve spoken with said that in 2007 breast cancer was given too much attention by retailers—to the point that customers complained that retailers were neglecting other causes.

Second, Easter received considerably less attention, slipping from No. 8 to No. 12. Third, Cyber Monday climbed two spots to No. 16, gaining on its increased name-recognition thanks to plenty of mainstream news coverage. And finally, despite retailers giving much more attention to ecofriendly products, Earth Day/Week was still near the bottom of the list in the No. 20 spot.

Retail Email Selling Season Windows

Retailers’ email promotions largely revolve around holidays and other selling seasons. So when you’re putting together your 2009 campaign calendar, consider the timings and durations of the 25 holidays and selling seasons in the chart below. The core of the selling season is indicated by a solid line, with outliers from 2008 indicated as dots.
