A notable theme emerging from last week's UN General Assembly was the use of collaborative approaches to tackle Living Wage gaps. Not only did the United Nations Global Compact launch its Forward Faster Initiative calling for companies to set two ambitious living wage targets, but WageMap, a consortium of leading living wage data and service providers, was launched to generate alignment across the living wage data community. This consortium of six organizations aims to: • Establish a Living Wage standard • Create globally comparable, locally specific Living Wage benchmarks • Strengthen Collective Capacity to Drive Implementation • Grow the Living Wage movement BSR has worked with over 35 companies on establishing living wage initiatives over the last 20 years. We are thrilled to be a key player in the WageMap steering committee and to have supported the incubation of the initiative with our collaboration expertise and secretariat support. Big thanks to our WageMap steering group NewForesight, WageIndicator Foundation, Living Wage For US Inc, Living Wage Foundation, and Loughborough University Centre for Research and Social Policy, as well as partners like Mars and Linklaters for making sure the launch was a success. #livingwage #socialimpact #sustainablebusiness

Global Lead, Human Trafficking and Forced Labor at BSR (Business for Social Responsibility)
Last week in Singapore I joined the first BSR Business and Human Rights Working Group which gathered over 50 participants across 26 multinational companies to unpack opportunities and strategies to fast-track the implementation of the #UNGPs across the Asia Pacific region. In the margins, we had the opportunity to organize our first Tech Against Trafficking regional multi-stakeholder roundtable on building an effective data ecosystem to prevent and address forced labor in value chains. Hard to condense the insights and deep dive conversations that we were able to hold in a few lines, but here's a few quick thoughts: ➡ It is evident that established buyer-supplier relationships are increasingly at the core of cascading meaningful human rights due diligence to address all human rights impacts, modern slavery in particular. Top-down and zero-tolerance policies are not going to eradicate the issue at system level. ➡ technology innovation cannot be the silver bullet in addressing complex challenges in the identification of human rights abuses; in fact, there is enough data out there, the critical step for the next few years will be to determine how this data is processed and building trust with workers at risk of vulnerability to utilize the existing technology. ➡ Systemic issues like modern slavery require an ecosystem that works holistically to understand market needs, workers voices, governments that enact meaningful policy to overcome inherent barriers to eradicating the root causes of exploitation. We also need to get more granular through regional engagement as there is no one-size fits all when it comes to rightsholders needs and economic dynamics. ➡ Collaboration naturally flows from here, and SMEs are going to play a crucial role in cascading efforts to increase human rights protection and promotion I am excited about the work that lies ahead and to continuing this fruitful engagement in EMEA and North America in the next couple of months.
