• Ousted Guinea president Alpha Conde has refused to sign his resignation letter

• He was deposed on September 5 by Elite Forces led by ne Mamady Doumbouya

• ECOWAS delegation met with Conde and confirmed that he is doing well

Ousted Guinean president Prof Alpha Conde has reportedly refused to sign a letter of resignation depite having been overthrown and detained since September 5.

Jeune Afrique - an influential Francophone Africa portal - has shared more details about the state of Conde who hasn't been seen publicly since viral photos and a video emerged with him surrounded by masked soldiers.

Two African leaders have in the last few years been forced to officially resign after the military took over power. First was Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe in 2019 and across Guinea's border, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita in Mali, who was deposed in August 2020.

Aside refusing to sign his resignation, Conde is also reported to have said that his decision to contest for a controversial term extension was in response to pleas by Guinean women.

The Jeune Afrique report also spoke about his current location: "According to our information, the former Guinean president remains detained in the special forces unit installed in a wing of the People's Palace, at the entrance to Kaloum, and more precisely in the suite where Lieutenant-Colonel Mamady Doumbouya previously lived.

"It is also in this same room (and not in Sékhoutouréya palace) that the now famous photo of Alpha Condé, sitting on a sofa and surrounded by soldiers, was taken shortly after his arrest."

A group of three ECOWAS Foreign Affairs visited Guinea last weekend and confirmed that they had met him and he was well.

Meanwhile, coup leader Mamady Doumbouya and his lieutenants have started a four-tier engagement with political stakeholders towards a transition.
