Pushkin Industries was started with a few simple precepts. Put artists and creators first. Produce work that we believe in. And, have fun.

Pushkin Industries is an audio production company co-founded by Jacob Weisberg and Malcolm Gladwell in 2018. Alexander Pushkin, the Russian Romantic writer, is our inspiration. Pushkin was a hybrid, a mix of Russian, African, and French ancestry — as well as a philosopher, poet, playwright, and novelist. Like him, our company is curious about everything and always wants to try something new. Diversity is at the heart of our culture, alongside intellectual openness, respect, fairness, and ethical behavior.

Pushkin Industries is headquartered in New York City with a northern outpost in Hudson, NY, and satellite offices in London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Boston.

Diversity Principles

Pushkin Industries was co-founded by a person of color and is named after a bi-racial poet. Diversity is at the heart of our culture, alongside intellectual openness, respect, fairness, and ethical behavior. Here are the commitments we’ve made toward building a genuinely diverse company and to promoting greater equality in our industry:

  1. Diversity is a core value at Pushkin. We seek it in our staff, in our shows, and in the voices of our hosts and guests.
  2. To that end, we seek out diverse applicants for all positions at Pushkin. We post open positions publicly, recruit through minority organizations and networks, and avoid relying on personal networks that may reflect systemic bias.
  3. We don’t use unpaid interns or volunteers. We don’t rely on contract workers for long-term, full-time work. Employees at Pushkin are offered benefits and a living wage.
  4. Comparable work earns comparable pay at Pushkin. We will monitor ourselves to ensure that we don’t have gender or racial pay gaps.
  5. We don’t pigeon-hole people to work on projects according to their identities.
  6. We don’t participate in panel discussions that lack racial or gender diversity.
  7. Pushkin supports industry efforts to diversify audio by training more people of color as producers, editors, and engineers.

Editorial Principles

Pushkin Industries is expanding the possibilities of spoken word audio. We produce podcasts, audiobooks and other projects that inform, entertain, and inspire listeners. Our work is built on principles of trust: respect and fairness, accuracy, accountability, and honesty. We understand that crucial to earning and nurturing trust is a workplace that values creativity, diversity and open communication.

Our work at Pushkin Industries is distinguished by its editorial process, and our producers and editors follow internal guidelines for ethical best practices. We strive for accuracy in reporting and storytelling. We seek out multiple viewpoints on complex issues. To ensure our standards are met, our content undergoes thorough editorial review prior to publication.

We aim to produce well-rounded stories that reflect the true complexity of the world we live in. We believe accountability to our staff and audiences makes our work better. We recognize our ethical responsibility to correct factual errors, large and small, and we are transparent about those corrections. We credit the work of others, avoid conflicts of interest, and make clear the funding sources of our work.

Our values of respect and fairness extend to the multiplicity of listeners and readers, including those with varying cultural backgrounds, who encounter our work. We approach our work in the spirit of transparency, safety, and humanity.
