I remember hearing that James Cameron did not originally want you for the role of the terminator. But then you guys went for lunch and he changed his mind. If this is true what did you say or do to convince him you were right for the role?

Huge fan by the way!

[–]GovSchwarzeneggerArnold Schwarzenegger[S] 3764 points3765 points  (222 children)

Actually, the story is a little different. I wanted the role of Kyle Reese when we went to lunch. I did not want to be the Terminator. I didn't think I had established myself yet enough as a hero to be a villain. When I started in Hollywood, all they offered was villains. So I wanted to really establish myself first.

But I told Jim some of my ideas about how the Terminator should train (not looking while loading weapons, not blinking, no emotions. I said the guy had to train blindfolded.) The Terminator, by the way, at that time, was O.J. Simpson.

Jim told me I had to do it. He was right.

[–]ForWhomTheBoneBones 3618 points3619 points  (97 children)

In a way, OJ got to be The Terminator after all.

Edit: Thank you, you anonymous redditor golden brazen bull owner. May my moos content you.

[–]ocdscale 1307 points1308 points  (32 children)

James Cameron didn't think O.J. would be believable as a killer, guess O.J. had the last laugh there.

[–]TexasTango 655 points656 points  (7 children)

O.J. Simpson.

Damn it would be a documentary if that happened

[–]mcpetbri 2914 points2915 points  (283 children)

What is nearest you have ever been to death?

[–]GovSchwarzeneggerArnold Schwarzenegger[S] 3985 points3986 points  (279 children)

I have two from movies.

On The 6th Day, there was a scene where I hide underwater behind embryos. I did a rehearsal with goggles and everything went fine. But when we actually shot, I couldn't see because the water was milky. So I ran out of air and went to the top and realized I didn't know where to get out. I was trapped. Then a hand grabbed me and pulled me out. It was my stunt double, Billy Lucas. He'd been watching from below with a tank and goggles and realized I was in big, big trouble.

On True Lies, you probably remember the horse scene. There was a shot where the horse had to stop at the edge of a building. They built a little ramp to give the horse longer to stop. But when they were measuring the new distance from the ramp to the camera, they dropped the arm of the camera on the horse's nose, and it went crazy, spinning and rearing. There was no rail, and the ramp was only 4 feet wide. I realized it was a bad situation and I slid off the horse right away and a stunt man grabbed me. That one was really scary. If the horse stepped a foot the wrong way, we would have fallen 90 feet to a cement floor.

These stories are why I will always love stunt people.

[–]SlothOfDoom 1119 points1120 points  (19 children)

I find it really interesting that it was stuntmen that were first to react both times. It is like doing a lot of the dangerous stuff for you isn't enough for them, they also need to be there like deranged guardian angels whenever you get in trouble.

If I had a stunt double I would hug him right now :P

[–][deleted] 520 points521 points  (9 children)

If your job AND your life depend on knowing how and when to react in a certain way to certain situations, you develop a keen eye for such things. Their life depends on recognizing dangerous situations. Those who aren't that capable usually aren't in the business for long...

[–]the_hunchback 780 points781 points  (17 children)

Stunt men and women are some of the most underappreciated artists on a film set. But, then again, to the mass viewing public, almost nothing beyond the drama is appreciated, so you could maybe say that the greatest appreciation of a stunt person or foley artist or recce or grip is that they aren't noticed.

Very manly stories, Mr. Schwarzenegger.

[–]metalkhaos 40 points41 points  (2 children)

I think at times its often the actors who most value the stunt performers. Any time I see an actor mention them it's always in very high regard.

[–]truckingsoftware 3072 points3073 points  (486 children)

Of all the things you are famous for, which are you most proud of?

Which are you least proud of?

[–]GovSchwarzeneggerArnold Schwarzenegger[S] 4420 points4421 points  (483 children)

I'm most proud that I was smart enough to immigrate to the greatest country in the world where I could accomplish all of my dreams.

I'm least proud of the mistakes I made that caused my family pain and split us up.

[–][deleted] 3542 points3543 points  (243 children)

I'm least proud of the mistakes I made that caused my family pain and split us up.

That's refreshingly yet depressingly candid of you Governor. Best of luck to you in the future in mending those fences.

[–]NickDerpkins 2449 points2450 points  (232 children)

I like how he atleast admits it head on. Most politicians and public figures would either not answer that part of the question or circumvent it. Good man.

[–]BlackCaaaaat 595 points596 points  (6 children)

You've got many reasons to be proud of yourself, but what I like about you is that you're honest about your mistakes - even the best of us make them, we're all human.

[–]GovSchwarzeneggerArnold Schwarzenegger[S] 251 points252 points  (76 children)

Apparently I broke a rule at r/AskReddit. That's ok, because one of my life rules is actually "Break some rules." I am reposting this here and asking for your ideas. Bring it on. And don't worry, I got the message about the bubble wrap before it was removed.

A while ago I asked Reddit for help raising money for my fundraiser to ride my tank with me to raise money for After-School All-Stars (http://www.omaze.com/Arnold), and the top video people wanted me to film was "Will it crush?" (http://www.reddit.com/r/ArnoldSchwarzenegger/comments/1t7hmh/give_me_some_advice/)

[–]ratwhale86 2164 points2165 points  (280 children)

What do you usually eat on your "cheat day"?

[–]GovSchwarzeneggerArnold Schwarzenegger[S] 3157 points3158 points  (272 children)

Schnitzel, Kaiserschmarrn, ice cream. You really can't go wrong with Austrian food when you want to indulge.

[–]BearLasso 1184 points1185 points  (112 children)

[–]Fonjask 1349 points1350 points  (82 children)

Kaiserschmarrn or Kaiserschmarren is a refined variant of the Schmarrn, a scratched pancake, which has its name from the Austrian emperor Kaiser Franz Joseph I of Austria, who was very fond of this kind of fluffy scratched pancake. It is a popular meal or dessert in Austria, South Germany, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

[–]cranberry94 581 points582 points  (44 children)

What does it mean scratched? I just imagine myself clawing at a pancake like I have kitty claws

[–][deleted] 214 points215 points  (23 children)

[–]Reutan 453 points454 points  (17 children)

It makes me think it's like "scrambled pancakes".

[–]ceedeez 2581 points2582 points  (162 children)

So, you're a big guy and an action movie star, but when was the last time you were in an actual physical confrontation? Not that you would promote violence or anything, but shit happens, right? Did you win the fight?

[–]GovSchwarzeneggerArnold Schwarzenegger[S] 4016 points4017 points  (151 children)

A few months ago, I got rear-ended by this guy. He took off, and I chased him. I will admit I drove at a slightly excessive speed. I cut him off, and two guys jumped out of the car looking tough.

But when they saw me, they just said, "Oh shit! The terminator!" They were nice, and gave me their information.

[–]Daxtreme 3637 points3638 points  (52 children)

Did you ask for their clothes?

[–]yakotala 2585 points2586 points  (27 children)

While the perpetrators are stripping off their clothing, Arnold looks at them, dead in the eye and asks..

"Who is your daddy and what does he do?"

[–]Crouch310 669 points670 points  (13 children)

"Who is your daddy and what does he do?"

I'm a cop you idiot!

[–][deleted]  (1 child)

    [–]QuietThunder 702 points703 points  (24 children)

Listen to me, very carefully, okay? You're not a terminator any more. Alright? You got that? You can't just go around killing people!

    [–]EverythingHasRabies 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I cut him off, and two guys jumped out of the car looking tough.

Basically Arnold cut the guy in half and he reassembled in two pieces. Sounds like the T1000 to me.

    [–]Phantom_dominator 224 points225 points  (4 children)

Who would be stupid enough to challenge the governator to a fight?

    [–]ilikebourbon_ 431 points432 points  (3 children)

Did you really mix your protein with whiskey sometimes like you said in a 1977 interview?

    [–]GovSchwarzeneggerArnold Schwarzenegger[S] 3333 points3334 points  (117 children)

No, I used schnapps. But yes, I did mix alcohol in to some of my protein drinks.

    [–][deleted] 2961 points2962 points  (46 children)

      [–]GovSchwarzeneggerArnold Schwarzenegger[S] 3306 points3307 points  (67 children)

I was in Cannes to promote Pumping Iron during the film festival. I did outrageous photo-ops all over. I thought throwing the law enforcement guys off the boat was a great one.

And I saw the photoshop battles. You guys are hilarious.

        [–]GovSchwarzeneggerArnold Schwarzenegger[S] 3244 points3245 points  (173 children)

I had a great time filming that. But you'll have to wait for the Super Bowl.

But, I have noticed lately people love to put me in disguises. You obviously saw the Bjorn Borg look. But I also made this video with reddit in mind, so I might as well put it out now. I play Howard, Gold's Gym field manager: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LUv3kbmNfg

        [–]GenYCEO 1369 points1370 points  (16 children)

If Gold's made a shirt with Arnolds face saying "This is Gold's Gym, not a baby gym!", I'd buy 20 for After School Programs :)

Smoking a cigar, on a tank, with Arnold is possibly the manliest thing anyone will ever do.

        [–]GovSchwarzeneggerArnold Schwarzenegger[S] 2689 points2690 points  (42 children)

No question. I love to drive the tank, so letting a fan be part of it is fantastic for me.

        [–]yakotala 1121 points1122 points  (18 children)

I read that as "I love to drink the tank" and for some reason thought this was completely plausible for Arnold's standards

        [–]FinKM 368 points369 points  (26 children)

First question then, which is /u/GovSchwarzenegger's favourite type of cigar?

Did the Predator ever make you shit yourself? It did for me when I was younger

        [–]GovSchwarzeneggerArnold Schwarzenegger[S] 3565 points3566 points  (133 children)

Not because of the predator. But during the shooting of the movie, I got really sick in Puerto Vallerta.

I will spare you the details, but while I was on a run, the runs hit. I ran to the side of the road and some cars driving by got quite the show.

        [–]CaptainRoger 2843 points2844 points  (66 children)

Your films got me through chemo dude. I was 12, I had non Hodgkin's lymphoma. I used to watch your movies religiously after my dad got me into them. I saw you as the chemo and the bad guys in the movies as the cancer. You always won and it made me feel good, coz in my head, you were kicking my lymphomas ass! Even the funny ones like Kindergarten Cop or Twins... It was my way of dealing with it all. I have seen every single one of your movies and documentaries. You are kind of a big deal in my family. Thanks for being awesome and making sweet films. I hope to meet you some day. It's on my bucket list! I don't have any questions. I'm just kinda stoked you might see this. Nothing but luv dude. From South London UK

Oh my god! This is awesome! I just checked back online and I am over the moon! So did Arnie write this? For real? Amazing! For the redditer who thinks I'm a liar, I'm not gonna lie about cancer. It's not funny. I'm not gonna lie. Trust me. I had two courses of chemo at the Royal Marsden Hospital, Croydon. UK. I had non Hodgkin's Lymphoma and had a biopsy on my neck. A huge lump that came out like a golf ball. It turned out to be cancerous. I was living in RSA at the time and my dad and I returned here so I could be with the family. My mom ditched. Haven't seen her since. I have a scar there now where the op was. I had "carpe diem" tattooed on my neck below the scar (I know neck tattoos are your favourite reddit) to remind me to live each day out fully. I'm 30 now , married and have a good job that I love. Again, I wouldn't lie. What's this competition ? I would love to do that! It would be sweet! How do I enter ?

Hey Arnold, long time fan. Couple of questions:

              1) How do you like having your own range of supplements? Have you been using them? If I take them will I be able to kill Predator?

              2) I feel like my deltoids are really lacking. Any particular dumbbell exercises you feel really work for you on the deltoids? (I only have access to dumbbells)

EDIT: You guys think I should try Arnold press. Don't steal Arnold's thunder.

EDIT 2: Arnold responded to me. I will now die a happy man.

              [–]GovSchwarzeneggerArnold Schwarzenegger[S] 1888 points1889 points  (64 children)

              1. It is fantastic to have my own line. It's something I waited a long time to do and I'm happy to have them formulated with what I consider the best ingredients to recover and rest. I don't know if you could beat the predator, but you could set a few new records for yourself. And yes, I take them.
              2. Perfect. Dumbbells are better than barbells for your delts. First, the Arnold Press. Start with a weight you can do 6 times. After 6, pick the next weight down. Work down the rack and do at least five sets. No rest, because picking up the lighter weight should be easy. Once you finish that, do lateral raises the same way. When I did this, I couldn't move my arms after, but it works.

Warum hast du dich in den deutschen Versionen deiner Filme nie selbst synchronisiert? / Why didn't you dub yourself in the German versions of your movies?

                  [–]GovSchwarzeneggerArnold Schwarzenegger[S] 1444 points1445 points  (77 children)

Sometimes I was doing 2 or 3 movies a year, and it was hard to get the timing right to sit in the studio and do the looping. So it was just easier to have someone who has a similar voice do it.

I did do a scene in German in Escape Plan, though.

Do you still think in German, after all this time in America?

                  [–]graveyarddancer 278 points279 points  (53 children)

I think he said in his first AMA that by now he's more comfortable in English than in German, which probably means thinking in English as well.

Heck, I'm Austrian myself and have only lived in the UK for 3 years now and even I think in English half the time.

                  [–]PoIiticallylncorrect 189 points190 points  (30 children)

I think in English sometimes, because I frequent reddit so much.

                  Hello Mr. Schwarzenegger!

I'm such a huge fan of your work (& thank you so much for it)

My question is: How do you feel about Women pursuing bodybuilding? (both competitively and non-competitively)

Sending you lots of love from the U.K. ❤

                  [–]GovSchwarzeneggerArnold Schwarzenegger[S] 1507 points1508 points  (20 children)

I love it. I always support women doing exactly the same sports as men, including bodybuilding. I have always supported women lifting weights and female bodybuilding. I think people have too many misconceptions about that. Lifting is so important.

As a matter of fact, George Snyder and I organized the first Ms. Olympia (in Pennsylvania) and then I continued to support it and organize at my events in Columbus.

I signed the bill because it was the right thing to do.

The only displeasure we heard was from the Turkish government. Interestingly, a year later, I was at a UN Conference getting an award for environmental work and I was seated next to the Turkish Ambassador. He was very complimentary and there was no mention of the legislation!

                    [–]STinG666 1452 points1453 points  (72 children)

I am of Turkish descent and I personally would like to thank you for recognizing something that geopolitics seemed to try way too hard to hide under the rug.

It's in the past and I am not responsible for the actions of the Ottoman Empire, so it's childish to ignore that it happened. It's appalling above all. People died and suffered and it's an egotrip to act like its not a thing.

Hi Arnold. Thanks for coming back.

I just want to mention that we have an opening for a full-time position on our community team.

We offer competitive salary and benefits, and one of our perks includes up to $500 reimbursable per year for gym memberships to encourage a healthy lifestyle. Under certain circumstances, you would also be authorized to wield the banhammer, although we have been especially impressed with your ability to resolve conflicts with well-chosen words.

We feel you would make a great addition to the team, and encourage you to apply for the position.

Hey Arnold, Just wondering if you've ever seen Bill Burr's bit in his newest standup where he talks about you. I think it's great and gave me a new perspective on how amazing it was that you immigrated to a huge country and achieved more than most people do in a lifetime.

I know this will probably be buried... My grandmother is a HUGE fan of you. She lives in Venezuela and due to the situation with the government there, doesn't get a chance to come visit often. But when she does all she wants to do is stay at home watching your movies. She doesn't speak English, so whenever I ask her what she's watching, she just looks at me and says "Arnold". When I ask her what's going on in the movie she simply responds with "Arnold is kicking some guys ass". She absolutely loves you and her birthday is coming up soon. I wanted to ask you if you could just simply write on a piece of paper "Feliz Cumpleaños Anriett Merjech" and take a picture. It would mean the absolute world to me and to my grandmother! She's getting old and I really know she would appreciate it. You have no idea what this would mean for her!! I hope you get to see this, if not, then I just wanted to thank you for all the laughs, gasps, and hilarious cursing I have been able to share with her through your movies.

Thank you so much! My grandmother is a HUGE admirer of all your work. I grew up with your movies at my grandmother's house every summer! I was hoping to get a picture of you in there too. But this is still fantastic!!

You could always simply print this as a layer over an existing picture of Arnold and print it. And you'll get your wish.

No! I missed the AMA because my internet was out all day... and... Coincidentally I spent the day making this.

                      [–]Buscat 304 points305 points  (12 children)

Hey Arnold, Last time you did an AMA I was a novice gym rat and I really had nothing to ask, so I just jokingly asked if I should go to the gym that night, and you actually answered! I'll never forget what you said. "Is this even a question? Of course!"

Well I was going to go anyway, but I really enjoyed telling my friends that Arnold had told me to go work out. Work kept me late that night and they really didn't appreciate "I NEED to get to the gym before it closes, I made a promise to Arnold", but I managed to get there and did some heavy-ass deadlifts (these days they'd be light to me, of course!) with tons of motivation.

It's around a year later now and I'm still a novice gym rat in my eyes. These things take time. But I'm hitting those weights 5 or 6 days a week. Funnily enough I watched Pumping Iron for the first time two nights ago, and I felt so great that THAT SAME ARNOLD had ever taken the time to answer a question of mine.

Here's my question: Did you still feel "small" when you were training for consecutive world bodybuilding titles? To me, even though I'm so much bigger and stronger than I was when I started, I feel like if I ever stop feeling small I will lose my motivation to keep training so hard. Did you have to adopt a different mentality when you were on top?

Really simple question: How are you doing today?
