Let's not make fun of AMD for no reason. Lisa Su is a nice person.

[–]eyesonly_Doesn't understand hype 1 point2 points  (1 child)

One time I had to roll my NVDA drivers back 2 years just so my GPU would work with an DisplayPort adapter.

[–]AnimalShithouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The amount of times I've done something like this with AMD GPUs is not insignificant lol. I don't even game anymore and my GPU still gives me a blue screen if I look at it the wrong way. I do think they've gotten better over time, at least - like some cheap ass fine wine in a cardboard box.

These incredible islands have been my home for 3+ years and of all the places I’ve lived, they are my favourite.

People are easy going and totally non pretentious, nature is amazing and the food is super tasty. Locals made me feel welcome and I’m super grateful for that.

Viva Islas Canarias and their funny Spanish accent :)

Only 3 of 11 sectors sitting above their 50SMA (IT, Comm, Cons Disc), and 4 sitting above the 200SMA (Industrials is add). Utilities, Materials, Staples, Health Care sectors are ugly AF. Debt ceiling deal did nothing.

I think we've hit a short term peak. NVDA popped and somewhat faded.

Look at AVGO - hasn't had ER yet - blasted off from ~700 to 810 last week following the Semi rally. Opened at 922 (up 15%) today and faded almost 10% since opening. We might get a100 point gap fill today. They do have ER on Thursday.

Bonds getting stampeded while volatility indices surge. VXN notably continues to move higher every day.

[–]Paul-throwaway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

VXN is typically 4.0 points higher than VIX. Right now, it is 5.2 points higher which signals options traders are expecting more volatility in the NDX than SPX for a while. But that differential has been in the 2.5 range for a few months now which is when NDX took that big move compared to SPX. VIX9D is typically 1.7 points below VIX but has dropped to about 0.5 now which signals traders are expecting more volatility in the short-term now. VIX1D, however, is 11.6 right now which suggests traders are not expecting big moves today.

Nvidia CEO Says Intel's Test Chip Results For Next-Gen Process Are Good

This is exactly what INTC needs to make foundry financially relevant - a big customer in a growing business. The idea is that INTC can manufacture the AI chips that are designed by other firms, and get exposure to the industry that way. The alternative is designing their own AI chips, but that is higher risk and may not succeed. Currently, INTC is trying to both internally design their own AI chips, but also win contracts to produce externally designed AI chips. They want to have their cake and eat it too. This makes sense because they do not know what the winning formula is yet. It is likely that only one of these two ambitions can succeed, longer term.

The simple reality is that not having a competing AI chip will certainly help attract business. This is one of the reasons why I believe it is crucial for their foundry to eventually be spun off. Right now, the conflict of interest they have with many potential customers is very limiting. This calculus has gone into some of the decisions to shutter certain business units. For example, they killed off many of their networking products and then won the business from what is very likely a networking firm. Coincidence?

[–]lizuming 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What prevents someone like INTC to just 'copy' the external designs they receive on the foundry side? Obviously the businesses are seperated but I'm sure they leak stuff to the other side...afaik TSMC doesn't design their own chips so there's no conflict of interest.

[–]W0LFSTENNo SeMiS aRe MaKiNg $$$ FrOm Ai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is part of the fear in using a firm like INTC, which has clear conflict of interest. Manufacturing firms need to work with the design firms to ensure the chip is manufacturable quarters ahead of when everything actually going into production. Obviously you can’t just copy and paste a design, but there is always the option to have a reference leak to people who can use that info to better understand where the competitor is going.

There is also the aspect where you are paying a competitor to make your chips. That extra profit they make from you can then be reinvested towards making you obsolete.

Not doing this is precisely what has helped make TSM the most valuable foundry. They compete with nobody and have vested interest in ensuring their customers succeed to the fullest. When AMD, AAPL, etc. succeeds, TSM succeeds because it means they can make more chips.

Megacap relative to small cap

[–]proverbialbunny🏴‍☠️ http://y2u.be/i8ju_10NkGY 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Small cap is strongly EFFR sensitive. They rely on loans for survival. (Conservative groups have been calling them zombie companies since 2020.) In comparison, Apple has more money than it knows what to do with, so it buys bonds. It has more money than many countries just sitting idle, completely the opposite. If you know this information this shouldn't surprise anyone.

What surprised me was late last year how well small caps did. I expected them to do worse.

[–]eyesonly_Doesn't understand hype -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I bet that was the narrative in 1999 too but real life has a way of catching up with valuation fantasies.

Not exactly. In 1999 there was this hot new brokerage called E*TRADE. For the first time in people's lives they got to invest. The narrative was a lack of narrative, it was tons of new investors rolling into the market for the first time. They didn't even know what an index was. The last time such a huge surge of new investors entered the market was in the late 1920s. (The 1950s is a contender too, but in a slow and steady kind of way.)

While there is a lot of difference, 2000 and 1929 had loads in common.

When both bubbles popped a lot of people stopped investing. They didn't talk about it, they lost 90%+ on the company they bought, and that was it. It was almost like a grand experiment. People try to compare 2021 to this with Robin Hood, but every new generation gets into investing at some point. 2021 for Gen Z was tiny compared to Gen X in the late 90s.

Link? Is there a Fred chart for this? PMI?

[–]proverbialbunny🏴‍☠️ http://y2u.be/i8ju_10NkGY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the link again.

Expectations regarding future manufacturing activity were mixed in May. The future production index rebounded from 3.0 to 12.0, while the future general business activity index remained negative, edging up to -12.7. Most other measures of future manufacturing activity remained positive but showed mixed movements this month.

This is interesting. I wish the Fed was a bit more transparent on this. This implies a bullwhip effect. The Fed seems to be bullish despite the weather.

Could be the bullwhip effect? I'm hesitant though. With loans coming back at the end of the month that will add more forces again the economy and inflation is still too high.

This looks bad.. I'd like to see this data over years for seasonality reasons, but not good..

Maybe copper falling makes sense?

[–]eyesonly_Doesn't understand hype 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Copper falling makes perfect sense. Germany is in a technical recession. Manufacturing is kinda fucked everywhere. China's reopening is faltering. All of this is pretty openly talked about.

[–]proverbialbunny🏴‍☠️ http://y2u.be/i8ju_10NkGY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My view on China is most copper went into industrial, and since the gov popped the real estate bubble China is building less going forward.

I'm surprised we didn't see "AI" in this data drop. Dallas fed is sandbagging or they got no wifi in Texas.

What is AI?

[–]proverbialbunny🏴‍☠️ http://y2u.be/i8ju_10NkGY 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a few definitions:

AI in a slang or sci fi common lingo kind of way is any tech that appears more human. (At one point in time the fill tool in Paint was called AI.)

AI in a technical definition is any algorithm that makes a series of guesses to get a good enough answer, because finding the perfect answer would take too long to compute. Therefore, the study of AI, like if you got a degree in it, is many ways of study on how to make a series of educated guesses in the most efficient way possible and then putting that into code. (Source, I have an AI degree before ML became popular.)

ML is called AI because at its heart it's making a series of educated guesses. Say you have a million photos of animals, the first photo you show it is a cat, you ask the ML, "What animal is this?" It doesn't know, it's the first time it's seen an animal, so it guesses wrong. You give it a second picture of a dog, "What animal is this?" and so on. By the time it's seen the 100 thousandth image it has a pretty good idea what a cat and a dog looks like and when asked it guesses to a high level of confidence.

ML is not classical AI, where you write an algorithm that makes educated guesses, but an automated form of AI. It's called AI because 1) It looks more human than previous generations. and 2) It's making a series of educated guesses as efficiently as we know how to.

[–]Paul-throwaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's make a real answer to the question. ChatGPT has done something different. People have been AI'ing for decades already but GPT did something different with the code that gave us a major breakthrough, or at least changed it enough so that it became a major step up.

Everyone who can do something with it has gotten that code now. The industry took the step forward as a group.

Its not the panacea that some are thinking. Millions of jobs aren't going to disappear. Maybe help desks and big data etc but there will be always be people running and fixing the algos/code and hardware.

NVDA and TSMC jump forward huge because NVDA's GPUs are required to speed the processing up enough to keep the AI feeling AI-like.

We took a big step up, that is all.

[–]eyesonly_Doesn't understand hype 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay so there's this thing called a generative AI and it works by plagiarizing everything and putting it back together in socially acceptable ways and people are SUPER hyped about it because they crave human interaction and chatGPT is friendly and helpful.

Edit: oh and it helps you find bugs in your code when it isn't making up libraries that don't exist. That's nice too.
