True, but I've been alive for two Cups and three Super Bowls and I'm 33. Lots of cities have had worse runs than we have.

I'd trade those Super Bowls for a World Series, though. I've accepted that I will die before the Rockies win a WS.

Yeah some fanbases don't know true pain, I've been alive for 0 cups and then 0 world series and 1 super bowl for the teams in the city closest because we don't get to have MLB or NFL teams lol

But we won the cup, it’s okay.

[–]eheheNSH - NHL 585 points586 points  (32 children)

That's the thing though, the Avs played great, they didn't disappear. They gave Vegas pretty much the max that they could handle, Vegas committed what, like 4??? delay of game penalties because they constantly felt pressured to clear the puck against Colorado's frightening danger offense. This series was 20-18 in goals with both teams getting a few garbage time goals. Their top line produced, their depth produced, they made tons of plays and got tons of quality shots onto Fleury who absolutely gave up 4-5 less goals than he should have in this series. Vegas allowed the least goals of any team this season -- they have 3 defenders who would be the best defender on most teams (Theodore, Martinez, Pietrangelo) and they have a Selke finalist.

The Avs have done nothing wrong, just like the Capitals when they produced elite team after elite team and just lost in great series' against other great teams (Penguins, Rangers teams that were just as good and arguably "underachieved" equally, Canadiens game 7 series, Lightning...) Of course they finally won a cup which goes to show...

There's no shame in losing to an equally good team, if the Avs had 4-5 more shots go in they win and then everyone's just talking about how lethal their speed and playmaking is. They went 35.2% on the powerplay this series, they brought their game and just got edged out by what looks to me like one of the best defensive units assembled in recent memory. It's just tough to win in the NHL, there are always at least 4 REALLY good teams, and then always several more with enough pieces to take a series. And you have to win 3 in a row just to reach the finals.

There are series losses that make you look inward and question everything but this was just a series where someone who didn't deserve to lose in round 2 was going to lose in round 2.

Avs lost this series when they choked the 2 goal lead in game 5. And tonight they showed they had no business going further. Couldn’t get any saves from Grubauer and Bednar still thought playing Patrik fucking Nemeth was a good coaching decision. Avs simply are not good enough. Will they be? That’s up to them. But this season overall feels like a gigantic waste.

Colorado losing this series is very interesting because it seems like they were being idolized as the “model” to follow for all other teams coming out of 2020-21.

Instead of being the model—what lesson do you think the Avs will learn about their roster construction? What lessons will other teams around the league learn from the Avs experience?

[–]notapunkCOL - NHL 56 points57 points  (14 children)

Being fast isn't the be all end all. If a team figure out how to shut that speed down like Vegas did in the neutral zone you need a plan B - which we didn't have.

[–]ThatLineOfTripletsTBL - NHL 19 points20 points  (3 children)

The Lightning learned this lesson like 4 times before they finally won the cup. It took a lot of tinkering and roster changes but they eventually found a balance and can play pretty much any way the other team wants and just do it better than them.

[–]daishi777COL - NHL 26 points27 points  (1 child)

I think Colorado D is still very young. They'll learn and develop. A 2c that doesn't get kicked out would have been cool because Compher is barely a 3c.

They lost to a very good team (tied 1st) that got pretty lucky on a lot of bounces. It happens.

The mistake would be blowing it up. They need to stay together and learn

[–]brmgp1NJD - NHL 68 points69 points  (9 children)

My opinion is that teams end up chasing that "gritty" style they feel is needed in the playoff often to their own detriment. I do think a lot of gritty teams have success in the playoffs moreso than the regular season. But if that's not your style, I don't think it makes sense to swap some of your speed and skill for some grinding fourth liners. You end up losing your identity a bit.

I think Colorado just ran into a beast and just didn't beat them. I wouldn't change much about the roster construction honestly, this team is a wagon.

[–]Fresh-Illustrator662VAN - NHL 235 points236 points  (35 children)

It’s not rocket science imo. Playoff hockey is different. You have to get greasy, as cliche as it sounds.

You need a guy parked in front of the net pushing around defensemen. You need your guys grinding in corners and along the half wall. That’s how you can burn the low zone collapse. By winning a board battle when they overload.

You gotta play that tough, dirty hockey. There’s no choice in the matter. Firing off 30 shots from the outside just isn’t gonna cut it. You can’t rely on rushes and the powerplay either.

Colorado isn’t a soft team. Their star forwards are all big, tough boys. It’s just the system that’s the problem, imo. It’s great if you wanna win a presidents trophy. Not so much the cup.

[–]rookie-mistakeWPG - NHL 216 points217 points  (10 children)

Playoff hockey is different. You have to get greasy, as cliche as it sounds.

I don't think it sounds cliche, it's true. It's like the NHL spends the regular season finding out which 16 teams are the best at one kind of hockey, and then spends the playoffs figuring out which of those is the best with a different rulebook. Kinda silly, imo

That was quite the collapse of Colorado, one could call it an avalanche.

[–]NonSequiturWalnutDAL - NHL 132 points133 points  (5 children)

An incredible hyped Avalanche team and a second round exit. Name a more iconic duo

[–]DeadlyChinchillaMTL - NHL 236 points237 points  (35 children)

Damn, the Avs falling for the 3rd straight time in the 2nd

They are officially chokers, the baton was passed from Caps to TBL to the Avs

[–]jjmutiCOL - NHL 46 points47 points  (6 children)

That pattern ends with a stanley cup at some point right?

[–]TheGreatSpagettCOL - NHL 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Hope so. Please.

[–]noor1717CGY - NHL 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Honestly probably

[–]obelisk29TBL - NHL 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hey now, we never choked in the 2’nd round.

[–]FronterrificTBL - NHL 156 points157 points  (16 children)

Sharks are in a league of their own though lol

[–]ThePareMTL - NHL 52 points53 points  (0 children)

They have their own log they choke on. No puny baton.

[–]markusalkemus66MTL - Bandwagon 93 points94 points  (26 children)

Friendship ended with Colorado. Now Montreal is my best friend.

[–]PropuhganduhCOL - NHL 37 points38 points  (1 child)

Well this fucking sucks.

[–]bobby_booch 53 points54 points  (1 child)

Looks like the Caps passed their second round curse to the Avs.

[–]Raven475COL - NHL 81 points82 points  (17 children)

Hey Vegas fans. I was at your game as an avs fan. And you were all pretty respectful and nice to me and my boy. You aren't the worst fans. Gg.

Edit: seen some wild shit on Twitter that contradicts this. Why be mean when you won. Who knows.

u/ClinchingBot: "The Boston Bruins have clinched 'not being the biggest playoff disappointment in 2021' in 12 games."

[–]theaspiringchimpEDM - NHL 37 points38 points  (5 children)

Don’t think the Bruins had that title to begin with… you guys made the second round

[–]nascar991134CHI - NHL 50 points51 points  (4 children)

Have you ever seen Girard win the league?
