True, BUT uploading 2 hours of video actually cost Twitter more than the TBC, so in effect it's a real Chad move

[–]The-Dankest-Normie 111 points112 points  (12 children)

Not doing it one time, no. You would have to upload it about 100-150 times to outweigh the price of the check.

[–]Vulturidae 64 points65 points  (10 children)

Some people will do that

[–]Zaurka14r/memes fan 34 points35 points  (9 children)

And it will all be deleted because of copyright.

And even if some "chads" uploaded movies that would outweight the cost of the blue check, most people who paid for it won't upload anything big at all, so they still aren't losing any money.

Assuming 10% of blue check owners actually try to sabotage Twitter they'd need to upload enough movies to cover for the other 90% of people to make a dent.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (7 children)

You know there's an entire subreddit already set up to have an automated script set to load thousands of hours of video per day and it can be easily copied by anyone who's interested in doing it?

Bet it gets removed for everyone but Elons buddies in a few weeks.

[–]Zaurka14r/memes fan -1 points0 points  (6 children)

Bet it gets removed for everyone but Elons buddies in a few weeks.

And then the videos get removed as well and Elon ends up with profit either way. Wow. We're totally eating the rich.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Huh? Who said that?

It's just another failed implementation by him. He already lost the 44 billion, he's never making it back.

You don't have to dick ride for him, it's really pathetic.

[–]Zaurka14r/memes fan -1 points0 points  (4 children)

He already lost the 44 billion, he's never making it back.

Oh yeah, and that definitely ruined him. Even if he lost double that he'd still have more than all of us gonna make in a lifetime. And he'll definetely make it back. If not from Twitter then from somewhere else.

You don't have to dick ride for him, it's really pathetic

I know reading is hard, but try to read my previous comment once again, so maybe it will eventually become clear to you that I'm definetely not supporting Elon. That doesn't mean I'm stupid enough to think Elon cares about some reddit "anarchist hacker wannabes", who think uploading a movie to Twitter will make Elon feel anything.

Every person who participates had to buy the blue checkmark, which means they're giving Elon his money. Their hope is that they'll be able to upload ungodly amount of data from that account which will nullify the profit from the blue checkmark, but it won't, cause Twitter will just delete the content, and keep the money.

So what I'm saying is no, you're not fighting the system. You're not even biting its ankles.

And the fact that majority of people post copyrighted stuff is even dumber.

[–]ChosenMateEic memer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

lmfao, do you really believe this

[–]finger_milk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly think twitter is such a cesspit of shit that buying blue and using it solely to sell something on it is the only worthwhile thing from it. All the blue users get their comments put at the top of the thread

[–]Mooraell 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Using twitter*

[–]SabMayHaiBC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]Alexandre_Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Cappy2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this all feels like an elaborate campaign to get people to sign up to Twitter Lol.

Like ‘sign up to Twitter Blue and pay $8 so you can stick it to Musk!’ and Reddit is buying into it hook, line and sinker.

[–]pokexchespinmemer past his prime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

if you pay but upload enough long videos to make them lose money i consider that a chad move

[–]Shaffo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]LordKiteMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Chymick6 318 points319 points  (30 children)

It's great because it's costing twitter a lot of money to save that data for Twitter basically nullifying the cost by a wide margin, I hope people keep doing this so Elon keeps hemorrhaging money

[–]asianblockguy 149 points150 points  (14 children)

It's even better. It puts Elon in the spotlight for a lawsuit by the producers of these films, and since the most recent one that someone posted the entire Mario movie on Twitter. We know infamy of Nintendo and lawsuits. They can just bury him into the ground.

[–]Chymick6 45 points46 points  (4 children)

[–]yourmomsthr0waway69 14 points15 points  (8 children)

How could they sue Twitter unless Twitter was ignoring DMCA requests and not removing the posts? Elon is a chode, but YouTube doesn't get sued every time some random violates a copyright

[–]DaEnderAssassinEnter Meme Here 8 points9 points  (2 children)

You miss when the muskrat fired the entire HR department and many others? I doubt the people in charge of DMCA requests still work there

[–]Cappy2020 4 points5 points  (1 child)

But it’s just pure speculation. This place was absolutely convinced that Twitter would stop working entirely when he fired most of the staff for example, yet it’s still fine (or nowhere near being inoperable). It’s hard to know what’s true and what’s not which is what confuses me about this whole thing.

[–]jeenyus79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're giving reddit people too much cred. According to Reddit, Russia will be on its knees 1 month after the sanctions hit and most likely stop the war. Here we are over a year later. Idiots assuming Nintendo or any Hollywood company would sue Elon or Twitter for what some dumbass posted and that will result in a loss of billions are just that, idiots. Reddit idiots in this case.

[–]Yeah_Nah_Cunt 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Apparently the cunt fired the team that handles these requests

[–]Cappy2020 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Source?

[–]Yeah_Nah_Cunt 0 points1 point  (1 child)

He's fired most of the legal team

You know people that would handle DCMA take down requests from organisations

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/13/technology/elon-musk-twitter-shakeup.html

[–]Cappy2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It says right there in the article that Musk brought in his own legal team though. Moreover, as of April 2023 when it served GitHub with a notice, it seems Twitter was actively tweaking their DCMA to do that, so they obviously have a specific team within legal who handles that.

[–]DangKillaEX-NORMIE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right. I worked at a datacenter. It’s not going to happen.

I think this is a signal to Tucker Carlson to move his show to Twitter.

[–]Crafty_Enthusiasm_99 25 points26 points  (1 child)

Someone automate it

[–]Chymick6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh you're think on the 5th dimension you mad lad!

[–]radicalelation 18 points19 points  (6 children)

Unless they got some crazy compression, video hosting is expensive af and unsustainable for most companies. Is it self sabotage?

[–]Chymick6 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is, that's why if you have TBC upload HQ long video to make twitter fall further in the negatives

[–]DnDVex 11 points12 points  (4 children)

0.023$ per GB for s3 storage. You'd need to upload 347GB to make it cost more for Twitter than the marker rate for s3 storage. Which Twitter probably doesn't pay.

[–]koerstmoes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't forget bandwidth! Egress fees from cloud services can be very expensive. Every view would cost twitter money

[–]justapassingguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Storage is cheap. Transferring the data to a bajillion users is the expensive part.

[–]Chymick6 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yes now imagine thousands of uploading, tens of thousands, everyday, several times a day

[–]XoXFaby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And all those people are uploading 300+ gigs?

[–]ZeAthenA714 8 points9 points  (1 child)

It will also cost them a shit ton of money in legal battles until they can reach an agreement like YouTube did, and then they're gonna have to spend a lot of money on engineering their own content flagging system.

[–]Chymick6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Perfection! Don't get me wrong, twitter was hemorrhaging a lot of money before melon bought it (at a ridiculous price) and the fact that it's hemorrhaging money faster is the best, fuck that white supremacist cunt

[–]DnDVex 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Data storage is cheap as fuck. 0.023 dollar per GB per month. You'd need to upload around 347GB of data to make it cost Twitter more than you pay them.

And that goes by the assumption that Twitter pays standard S3 bucket costs.

[–]Trihard_from_Myanmar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the storage itself is pretty cheap. Its the traffic that costs a lot ( around 2-4 times more expensive ).

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It really isn’t, 8gb is going to cost about 16 cents to store.

[–]Palidin034inserted penis into slot machines 155 points156 points  (18 children)

I’m similar news, I have the entirety of the SpongeBob movie as well as the Mario movie saved on my camera roll

[–]sucobeMasked Men 31 points32 points  (1 child)

Yoooo. How’s the SpongeBob movie?

[–]stjimmy_45 16 points17 points  (14 children)

Links bro

[–]testaccount0817 37 points38 points  (13 children)

[–]IAmHippyman 15 points16 points  (9 children)

I definitely didn't download this extremely quickly.

I'm totally not impressed by the very fast download thanks to the impressive compression on this file.

[–]testaccount0817 0 points1 point  (8 children)

Is it? Haven't come around to actually download it, I'm German so I'd need a vpn first.

[–]bigtoebrah 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Direct download is generally the safe way to pirate things because there's no way for the copyright holder to tell you downloaded it

[–]testaccount0817 2 points3 points  (3 children)

They could just ask my ISP?

[–]bigtoebrah 2 points3 points  (2 children)

How would they know to ask?

[–]testaccount0817 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Nvm, seems kinda safe. But I'm not risking anything for a mid movie

[–]bigtoebrah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough

[–]IAmHippyman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It would be illegal for me to download this file. I'm not a silly criminal.

I have no idea that the filesize is 603 MB. There's no way I could possibly know that!

[–]dudipusprime 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Why?

[–]testaccount0817 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because I'm not eager to pay 800€ or something in fines

[–]GregTheMad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 79 points80 points  (19 children)

it not 4K but it an honest work

note: 1H of 4K is 14TB

edit: 7GB*

[–]Vice4Life 65 points66 points  (4 children)

You're missing a decimal. It's about 1.4TB per hour of raw 4K.

Also, no one is uploading raw 4K anything.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

oh, my bad it's 14 GB

[–]itsfreepizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]THEKILLERWAFFLEI am utterly indifferent to Jojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]alexdiezgHeadBasher - Always bashin' all 'em 'eads in with a sledgehammer 8 points9 points  (12 children)

14 TB? I guess quality compression is the way to go. You can get 4K movies from places like YTS that's under 4GB and looks sufficient on a 4K monitor.

[–]Unknown-Key 1 point2 points  (9 children)

It might look fine on a 24" 4k monitor but on a 43", 108cm 4k tv it will look terrible. I have tested the same video with 4GB 4k and 18GB 1080p formates on my 108cm/43inch 4K TV. 1080p 18GB video looked much better than the 4K one with low bitrate.

[–]alexdiezgHeadBasher - Always bashin' all 'em 'eads in with a sledgehammer 0 points1 point  (4 children)

From YTS? I think they look fine from there, and I'm on a 32 inch 4K monitor and a TV similar to yours. 18GB for a 1080p movie seems like a stretch though but what do I know

[–]Unknown-Key 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Yep, From YTS. They offer very low bitrate on their releases. That is how they achieve small package size. If you are looking for a better source, look at rarbg. YTS offers 4K x264 with 4gb or 1080p 2gb size 3000kbps bitrate, you can find the same thing on Rarbg with options like 4K 16GB 15000-20000 kbps or 60gb 68000 kbps bitrate, 1080p 1.5gb x265, 1080 x264 2gb 2000 kbps or 1080p 6gb 9000kbps etc...

[–]alexdiezgHeadBasher - Always bashin' all 'em 'eads in with a sledgehammer 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Well now our conversation aged like milk as rarbg are shutting down.

[–]Unknown-Key 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing yesterday.

[–]alexdiezgHeadBasher - Always bashin' all 'em 'eads in with a sledgehammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So where to now?

[–]Vittulima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTS

Compressed to all hell

[–]Jaydeep0712 5 points6 points  (0 children)

AV1 or h.265 that monstrosity down to a couple of gigs

[–]hard_ass69 41 points42 points  (19 children)

2 hours of video is not equal to 8 GB. The size of a video file depends on file format, resolution, framerate and bitrate, as well as (if not more than) video length. A two hour video can be 100 MB, and an 8 GB video can be as short as 10 minutes or as long as 10 hours.

This seems like just another case of Elon Musk being stupid and not understanding technology. Maybe it's a double limit, like you can upload a video that's max 8 GB OR 2 hours long, and Elon just misunderstood. But, I don't use Twitter and can't really check if that's the case, and honestly I can't really be bothered.

[–]Mooraell 22 points23 points  (15 children)

Pretty sure it's a double limit. Elon's a total asshole but he's not stupid

[–]ChaoticNeutralDragon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nah, he's definitely stupid.

[–]hard_ass69 5 points6 points  (10 children)

I mean, the fact that he doesn't understand file formats shows that he has some glaring gaps in knowledge when it comes to digital media. The fact that he decided to buy and make himself the CEO of a social media platform despite that seems pretty damn stupid to me 🤷‍♀️ and the consequences have been pretty self evident.

[–]Mooraell 15 points16 points  (9 children)

While Twitter has indeed only been going downhill since the takeover, i have to disagree that this tweet shows that he doesn't understand file formats. Unless you're referring to something else, in which case I'll be glad to see yet another one of his embarassments

[–]pigeonlizard 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Not exactly about file formats, and only tangentially related, but is yet another of his embarrassments: according to one of the dogecoin creators, Musk didn't know how to run a python script that they've sent him.

[–]Haptoh 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Elon's a total asshole but he's not stupid

Citation needed.

[–]Mooraell 2 points3 points  (1 child)

To the former claim or to the latter? If it's to the latter I'm willing to concede

[–]Haptoh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To the fact that he is not stupid 🤣

[–]orangesony 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is clearly him saying that the file size has to be under 8GB

[–]magicalbeast69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[deleted] -- mass edited with redact.dev

[–]Draculea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For talking so much shit about how much video can change in format, you sure don't seem to understand that most sites digest their own video into a format they prefer.

WEBM-VP9 would be my choice; you could get 2 hours in 8GB easy.

[–]Pepe_is_a_God 35 points36 points  (2 children)

I mean i am not against mass piracy on twitter

[–]itsfreepizza 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I mean, Elon is loaded anyways (in stocks if I remember)

[–]matthigastMods love that juicy D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]shapookya 29 points30 points  (2 children)

[–]Twistedjustice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]Spokesface2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Valuable-Throat-2948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Mankah 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Twitter has potentially the worst video player I've ever seen on a site with that big a userbase so I can't imagine what the point of this is.

[–]zayoyayo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, what is the interface and feature set really compared to YouTube? Who wants to watch a 90 minute video in the twitter video player?

[–]UN16783498213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To platform and amplify the alt-right radicalization pipeline.
Gotta get those long form hot-take video essays from academically dishonest pundits shoved down the throat of angry disenfranchised middle Americans, before they start concluding for themselves who is really robbing them of their future.

[–]Leonardobertonithe very best, like no one ever was. 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After pirating it off pornhub

[–]Almacca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, didn't Tucker Carlson recently announce he was going to do a show on Twitter? I wonder if it's a two hour show.

[–]Chymick6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do it everyday, why not

[–]NumberlessColors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it is duration not size then a 2h video of static would larger than the bee movie as it is really inefficient to compress.

[–]Prisoner_-_24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man why would anyone want to watch a 2 hour video on twitter. It's designed for quick scrolling.

[–]SomeGuyOfTheWeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because twitters server infrastructure can handle thousands of people uploading multiple 8gb packets.
WHAT IS THIS GUY THINKING

[–]BananaBus43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone is gonna find a way to turn this into a cloud storage. They could do something like this.

[–]LeoLaDawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's really the point for that feature?

[–]That-Leek5242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES!

[–]FoxtrapJake☣️ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Twitter is gay

[–]abcpdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wasn't there a data compression algo that encodes it into a video? I doubt twitter has the man power to implement a check for it right now...

[–]XanadurSchmanadur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, 8 GB? With no limitation whatsoever?

This won't go on for long, data storage costs could go through the roof, not to mention any piracy lawsuits, especially in the EU.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The copyright

[–]azeryvgu 0 points1 point  (0 children)
