People are unbelievable. In a post where everyone is talking about leaving Reddit, they gave reddit money just to put a little gold sticker on a comment.

And people wonder why Reddit does what its doing. Why wouldn't they if they get handed money for nothing.

Yes! And stop giving people gold!.

Edit. I'm incredibly disappointed in the people that gilded my two comments. Giving a comment gold does absolutely nothing but give the company running Reddit your money. All you're doing is throwing money away.

If you really like giving your money away u/bustab and /u/Alpha_Decay_ at least give it to people that could actually use it. There are millions of people down on thier luck, in a slump, hungry, etc. Hell, pay my rent if you'd like.

Don't waste it on this site though.

911 call made the day before the Davenport building collapse by mick_ward in videos

[–]Superbead 644 points645 points  (0 children)

Here's a picture of the now-collapsed area of wall just before it did: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FxftU5jXoAIKIgE?format=jpg

In parts, the workers have stripped the exterior layer of (red-painted) brick away to reveal the loadbearing masonry wall inside. Check the masonry column that's immediately to the right of the door - there's a chunk missing near its base, and it's kicking to the left and deforming the door. I suspect this was the initial point of failure for the collapse.

The following documents I'll link are all here, and more: https://www.davenportiowa.com/cms/One.aspx?portalId=6481456&pageId=19580321

Back in July 2021, a resident had complained about that same door jamming, and the interior wall just inside it bowing out - check page 3 of this PDF:

[X] FROM UNIT 105 CALLED IN [...] DRYWALL AROUND DOOR TO PARKING LOT IS NOT STABLE AND DOOR IS VERY DIFFICULT TO OPEN -NOT SURE IF STRUCTURALLY SOUND

Page 1 of the same PDF shows the city requested a structural engineer's report. That hasn't been released yet.

And here are the associated pictures. The cracked drywall is on the immediate inside of the dodgy-looking masonry column I identified at the top of this comment.

So it looks like that internal masonry column was probably failing for years, jamming the door and making the external brick skin and the interior drywall bulge outwards as its height decreased.

Apartment 105 - possibly on the ground floor and next to the door, and housing the person who complained - was later issued a forced vacation notice. Here it is on the door.

What did the structural engineer come up with back in 2021? Did they ever investigate the condition of the masonry inside the drywall?

Blade Runner (1982) Deckard administers the Voight-Kampff test on Rachael by MercuryRedstone77 in videos

[–]KickingDolls 200 points201 points  (0 children)

I've had this argument many times, but I think the idea of Deckard being a replicate is a fun twist but ultimately ruins the narrative core of the film.

Deckard is a placeholder character that represents the apathy of humanity in this future. People have let the world go to waste, and through a lack of care have let all the real animals die and the environment go to shit. And our treatment of the Replicants is used as the key demonstration of this, despite the fact that these robots are basically indentical to humans in everyway we treat with a complete lack of empathy or care.

So at the climax of the film the "villain", Roy Batty (a Replicant) shows compassion and saves Deckard. He is showing Deckard (and the audience) the importance of life and empathy, and this is a moment of realisation for Deckard. The "robots" are more human than the humans. It's a wake up call that we have to change our ways and is a pivotal lesson/message of the film.

If Deckard is also a Replicant it completely undoes this concept and negates his entire narrative arc.

Partial building collapse in Davenport, Iowa leaves community desperate for answers by Gary_Vigoda in videos

Don’t worry guys. The free market will take care of this. That builder, inspector, crew probably won’t build anything else. We still don’t need regulations or penalties for not following them. In fact, after this, maybe we double down and blame the regulations for making them cut corners and convince the public that building standards caused this mess.

Yes but it gets at the very what is of consciousness. Altering you’re perception of reality gives you another vantage point to see the universe. It’s like seeing the Grand Canyon from the air or seeing it from the bottom of the canyon not the same experience.

The man who threw his shoes at Bush, was sentenced to three years in prison (only serving 9 months), beaten and abused while in there; had this to say:

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2009/sep/17/why-i-threw-shoe-bush

"Over recent years, more than a million martyrs have fallen by the bullets of the occupation and Iraq is now filled with more than five million orphans, a million widows and hundreds of thousands of maimed. Many millions are homeless inside and outside the country.

We used to be a nation in which the Arab would share with the Turkman and the Kurd and the Assyrian and the Sabean and the Yazid his daily bread. And the Shia would pray with the Sunni in one line. And the Muslim would celebrate with the Christian the birthday of Christ. This despite the fact that we shared hunger under sanctions for more than a decade.

Our patience and our solidarity did not make us forget the oppression. But the invasion divided brother from brother, neighbour from neighbour. It turned our homes into funeral tents.

I am not a hero. But I have a point of view. I have a stance. It humiliated me to see my country humiliated; and to see my Baghdad burned, my people killed. Thousands of tragic pictures remained in my head, pushing me towards the path of confrontation. The scandal of Abu Ghraib. The massacre of Falluja, Najaf, Haditha, Sadr City, Basra, Diyala, Mosul, Tal Afar, and every inch of our wounded land. I travelled through my burning land and saw with my own eyes the pain of the victims, and heard with my own ears the screams of the orphans and the bereaved. And a feeling of shame haunted me like an ugly name because I was powerless."

They used white-phosphorus and napalm

Jesus fucking christ

"The Pentagon said it had not tried to deceive. It drew a distinction between traditional napalm, first invented in 1942, and the weapons dropped in Iraq, which it calls Mark 77 firebombs. They weigh 510lbs, and consist of 44lbs of polystyrene-like gel and 63 gallons of jet fuel.

Officials said that if journalists had asked about the firebombs their use would have been confirmed. A spokesman admitted they were "remarkably similar" to napalm but said they caused less environmental damage"

They kill over a million INNOCENT people. Destroy the lives of the entire nation x 2. 20 years late completely bungle the "withdrawal". Which is bull shit because they're still fuckjng there.

Then, steal over 7 billion dollars from the citizens

But sure, let's talk about the soldiers that carried out the fucking terrorism

Child of a freight conductor / engineer.

Not only are road crews on call 24/7, including birthdays, school functions and holidays (though I will note that the company did try to get people home for the bigger ones) but you're also given 2 hours notice when your job is ready. That's 2 hours to squeeze a life into, plus getting ready and commute time. For my family, that meant hurried trips to the grocery store and other errands, events cancelled when the pager went off, plans that we bothered to make abandoned.

Other element for road crews is that after they finish their 8-10 hour shift (which could be much longer if they were stuck in a siding somewhere) they're at the away terminal. Conrail / NS would put their crews up at a seedy motel to rest the legally required 8 hours before sending them home, but if there wasn't any traffic heading back to the home terminal, crews could be stuck there for much longer (though usually after a day or two they'd just rent a van and drive them back). Sometimes my dad would get in at 11 pm, get called at 5am for an 7am job and be gone before we left for school or even woke up, and then be gone for 2 or 3 days after that.

Add in stuff like random banner testing and the company doing as much shady shit as possible to maintain their safety record, living on drive-thru and vending machine food at the away terminals... it was lonely for all of us and especially stressful and unhealthy for my dad. I still remember how quickly he could fall asleep at any moment just because he never knew when he'd get another chance.

Edit: Thank you for the silver and platinum awards! I've never woken up to so many messages in my inbox and I'll try to answer your comments if they haven't already.

Since this post is getting a lot of attention, I want to also take a moment to remind people to never ever EVER try to "beat" a train or go around the crossing arms. You're not just putting yourself at risk but the engine crew of the train that hits you will relive that moment for the rest of their days.

I was in a galley tent in Kuwait during the Colin Powell’s WMD speech

It's hard to explain to people who weren't alive or of-age the amount of public support for invading Iraq during this time period, the few who DID speak out against it were labeled as anti-American and dragged through the press. The military didn't have the stigma that it has today and it wasn't seen as a "way out" for those who couldn't get into college or got in trouble with the law.

Corporations want to not only normalize ‘sacrifice’ and ‘hard work’ for blue collar jobs, but they want it to be worn as a badge of pride so the workforce will ‘self-motivate’ and work themselves to death to earn the respect of their peers, when it’s all just an investment-free way for the executives and the corporations to maximize their profits.

I have small children and have also been trying to have a really ‘strong work ethic’ to fulfill managers’ requests and show leadership that I can do it all. I don’t do blue collar work, anymore, but worker bee white collar work is treated the same.

I saw something recently that hit hard and the part of the video about missing his son’s birthday reminded me of it; I didn’t want the entire thing, BTW, but I got to see that part. The post was basically: your managers won’t remember all the nights you worked late, but your kids will.

My oldest is in 4th grade, and it literally feels like last week he was in Kindergarten. My youngest ones are going to be in Pre-K and Kindergarten in the fall, and I can remember the first days home with them from the hospital.

It wasn't a war. It was a massive way for the United States to field test new equipment as well as use it to activate the National Guard/reserves so they could update all of their equipment from Vietnam. The entire Iraq war was a fever dream for contractors and the military industrial complex.

Everybody you know that died over there was for nothing more than greed and their own misplaced trust in the fever of patriotism after 9/11. That is a very hard pill to swallow, its taken me 20 years to choke down that my bad knees, bad hearing and the people that died was all so I could get a bachelors degree for "free". Come to terms with it however you want but stop looking for something deeper it only prolongs the healing. At this point all our war was good for is the Hollywood script mill at this point.

Oh this explanation is super simple and easy to follow. I spent 10 years in the U.S. Army, with deployments to both Afghanistan and Iraq as a combat arms soldier. I did this to buy new cars and more houses for men with already full plates. That’s it, that’s the entire thing. It isn’t convoluted. Being a poor kid with zero prospects, I hoped to use the military to build myself a better life, but all I did was fill the mouths of other men. There’s your reason, there is no good justification, it was simply those with money using those without money to enrich themselves. So you can explain it to yourself, very easily in fact, but the question here is, will you?
