Taken near Palm Springs as I recall!

[–]BloomsdayDevice 1222 points1223 points  (12 children)

Hang on there, Mr. Astley. The sign above the pump clearly says "No Smoking", but. . . well, just look at you!

[–]Ivotedforher 280 points281 points  (6 children)

Rock stars are allowed to break the rules, man.

[–]LegendofNick 2770 points2771 points  (77 children)

Are you my dad?

[–]Butwinsky 7324 points7325 points  (49 children)

No. He clearly wouldn't have gave you up.

[–]I_Mix_Stuff 710 points711 points  (22 children)

Poor Nick, keep looking buddy, ask Mick Jagger, high chances.

[–]LegendofNick 194 points195 points  (20 children)

Was he in Palm springs in 1989???

[–]Buksey 128 points129 points  (13 children)

They played 4 days in LA in Oct 89, so maybe?

[–]I_Mix_Stuff 71 points72 points  (4 children)

close enough for future mom to make it to backstage and return same night

[–]heyheysharon 74 points75 points  (3 children)

Open and shut case, just like his mom's legs. No shame though!

[–]echobox_rex 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Steel Wheels baby! I didn't see them but I did spend the summer of 89 in SoCal. The summer I turned 18.

[–]craggmac 26 points27 points  (0 children)

That’s just the way Rick rolls.

[–]istrx13 40 points41 points  (1 child)

He also never would have let him down

[–]Spanky_McJiggles 75 points76 points  (5 children)

Your mom used to work the lot of a Palm Springs gas station?

[–]LegendofNick 42 points43 points  (3 children)

Well...

[–]willengineer4beer 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Are you saying the lizard doesn’t crawl far from the lot?

[–]DrAlright 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You wouldn't get this from any other guy

[–]fudgyvmp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure your dad is Gorbag. He plays guitar for Fig and the Cig Figs.

[–]Wrenzo 109 points110 points  (41 children)

There are a number of songs by your fellow Brits singing about that part of California. Robert Plant has "Twenty nine Palms" which is a nearby town and Peter Gabriel sings "San Jacinto" which is where the Palm Springs air tram take you up to!

[–]BlatantConservative 91 points92 points  (22 children)

British people love southern California because it does not rain

[–]Wrenzo 61 points62 points  (13 children)

That's actually what Southern Californians love about it too!

[–]fiealthyCulture 8 points9 points  (3 children)

I fell in love with Southern California first time i went, and then my following trip was San Francisco - Portland up the coast and back down through Bend and Redding, and I'm completely torn between the two. Bend and Redding surprised me the most. I would move to either in a heartbeat

[–]macdaddy7885 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Amen! As a Kentuckian, I do love that socal people really do appreciate how amazing the weather is. Very few seem to take it for granted. Course with the COL, Im sure everyone is intimately aware of why it is so expensive. The weather is absolutely perfect.

[–]talking_pillow 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Stay sexy Rick!

[–]Haus42 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Why "smiling like a ginge in the Sonoran Desert" isn't a commonly used metaphor.

[–]bradlees 17 points18 points  (17 children)

What car is that? Looks like a convertible but I can’t make out what make, model, year and if it was yours or just one used by the band for transportation?

[–]i_suckatjavascript 17 points18 points  (4 children)

There’s only one thing to do: post on r/namethatcar!

[–]willengineer4beer 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Is it possible to read the name of that sub without one’s inner voice(s) sounding like an excited game show audience?

[–]BuranBuran 6 points7 points  (5 children)

It's really hard to tell from this angle. The perspective is odd. What car has a fuel filler in that location, that high up? Some pick-ups do, but I agree that this looks more like a convertible car.

[–]sitting-duck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Vinyl car tops were a thing back then, which I think this is.

The "rib" is the giveaway that it's not a ragtop.

[–]JimminityGlickMyBic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No tour bus or van? You had to drive yourself? At what point does one get an official tour bus?

[–]Don_Bardo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It has a classic "Americana" vibe, right down to your facial expression

[–]Hunor_Deak 7 points8 points  (8 children)

What was the 1980s really like?

[–]Malkelvi 18 points19 points  (4 children)

Cocaine, synthesizers and DeLoreans. This has been proven.

[–]UlrichZauber 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Psh, you forgot about shoulder pads and hair gel.

[–]msut77 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think we can get Tom Holland to play you in your bio pic

[–]Kingoo321 2765 points2766 points  (73 children)

this belongs in r/oldschoolcool rick!

[–]Dodototo 470 points471 points  (55 children)

Agreed. Seems like a lot of pictures from people being horny from classic photos.

[–]BlatantConservative 472 points473 points  (52 children)

[–][deleted] 243 points244 points  (26 children)

I love how Apollo thumbnails the links so I don’t actually get rickrolled anymore

[–]Count_Joshoo 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I got Rick rolled as your comment sunk in. No regrets.

[–]prollyNotAnImposter 10 points11 points  (1 child)

If it ends in XcQ, a simple "fuck you bud" will do

[–]mobileuseratwork 33 points34 points  (3 children)

Sync does as well. It's great

[–]Mavvy51 13 points14 points  (1 child)

I wanted to see hot moms

[–]an_alternative 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thanks reddit 💀

[–]hergumbules 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah let’s bring that sub back to it’s roots. Being horny for Rick Astley

[–]stratman77 4512 points4513 points  (57 children)

Well, this is really fucking cool. Thank you for sharing, Rick!

[–]ReallyRickAstley[S] 3532 points3533 points  (50 children)

Cheers! 👍

[–]istrx13 650 points651 points  (27 children)

This is crazy! I met you at a concert backstage back in the da…I’m just kidding man you’re smarter than that after what happened last time.

[–]maddrb 328 points329 points  (24 children)

Can you imagine being the Redditor that Rick-Rolled Rick Astley... like you should never pay for a drink again :) Rick was so cool about it as well.

[–]Wtzky 113 points114 points  (20 children)

Some one Rick Rolled Rick??

[–]SaintNewts 261 points262 points  (18 children)

[–]Wtzky 67 points68 points  (1 child)

Wow, what a ride! That's awesome

[–]jrgman42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s all we talked about at work that day. :)

[–]cannotbefaded 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Lol. “premium until 2037” :)

[–]SparkyWolf69 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I’m shocked that this link was legit tbh

[–]SaintNewts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Too easy. The unexpected trick is pasting a legitimate link. Hehe.

[–]CordeliaGrace 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh…I remember watching this go down. Such a beautiful moment in history here.

[–]Altoid_Addict 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Damn, I didn't even know Reddit had that many awards.

[–]Need_Some_Updog 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Rickception

[–]acsaid10percent 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Never gonna fill you up.

[–]S2keepup 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Curious what kind of car this is?

[–]Nicksix66 869 points870 points  (17 children)

The Rickest Rick

[–]I_Mix_Stuff 193 points194 points  (2 children)

Rick about to get rolling

[–]NorCalAthlete 54 points55 points  (9 children)

u/reallyrickastley, have you ever dressed up as Rick Sanchez for Halloween? From Rick & Morty?

[–]BlatantConservative 68 points69 points  (8 children)

Someone did a combo halloween costume back in 2017. I like the microphone.

[–]snack-dad 56 points57 points  (1 child)

That was different than what you made me expect.

[–]killeronthecorner 7 points8 points  (3 children)

This was confusing and even more confusing when I saw your username (that I remember from the world news live threads)

[–]BlatantConservative 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I take pride that nobody can figure out what type of account mine is.

[–]killeronthecorner 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I'm going to assume that you're three monkeys in a trenchcoat until someone is able to prove otherwise

[–]TokenMac 3608 points3609 points  (59 children)

I love that Rick Astley will randomly post stuff like any other Redditor.

I'm just scrolling along and then I'm like how do I know this kid... oh, this kid is Internet King Rick Astley.

Edit to add, Together Forever doesn't get enough play. It's a real bop.

[–]Maddie-Moo 383 points384 points  (14 children)

Every once in a while someone will post about weightlifting or something and I’m like “this motherfucker over here acting like he’s Arnold Schwarzenegger” and then I look at the username and realize this motherfucker over here is, in fact, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

[–]BlatantConservative 165 points166 points  (9 children)

I don't even lift and watching him give absolute randoms lifting advice on /r/bodybuilding is super entertaining. Especially when they don't know.

[–]Talking_Head 113 points114 points  (3 children)

I remember the Reddit phase were everyone was posting pics of their “battle stations.” Suddenly, the real Chewbacca shows up and posts a cockpit shot from inside the Millennium Falcon. RIP, dude.

[–]Fluffybobcat 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I miss Peter Mayhew's random heartwarming comments that I'd see on occasion. Such a class act. And he always signed with

Cheers,

Peter Mayhew.

Cheers,

Fluffybobcat

[–]imisstheyoop 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I remember the Reddit phase were everyone was posting pics of their “battle stations.” Suddenly, the real Chewbacca shows up and posts a cockpit shot from inside the Millennium Falcon. RIP, dude.

I still miss seeing random comments from Wesley Crusher all over. This place sure as went to hell since then.

[–]Letter-Past 407 points408 points  (10 children)

I almost feel like Together Forever is the sequel song to Never Gonna Give You Up, like after they get married and have been together for awhile

[–][deleted] 106 points107 points  (1 child)

That's been my head canon fof decades

[–]perfectlyniceperson 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I love that other people have this head canon too!

[–][deleted] 49 points50 points  (0 children)

And then they had a baby together. And that child would become far more famous than either parent. And that child's name?

Richard Roll Astley, Jr.

[–]DoctorSteve 16 points17 points  (3 children)

I love Together Forever.

And I love Never Gonna Give You Up.

But people please, let's give Whenever You Need Somebody some love. It's got the same type of intro and it's the title track and it's AWESOME.

I would have linked the song but I didn't need people not trusting me.

[–]Kri55ed_Kro55ed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, the chorus is so catchy and the track is just a bop all-around. Hopefully more people give it a listen!

[–]GGezpzMuppy 121 points122 points  (11 children)

Best thing is that he even knows reddit memes and interacts with commentators. Him getting Rick rolled on his own post will go down in reddit lore.

[–]KeeperOfTheGood 24 points25 points  (10 children)

Can you link me to that so I can see it one more time?

[–]sanguine-13 46 points47 points  (4 children)

[–]dansaruken 24 points25 points  (0 children)

OK but overwriting the hyperlink of a URL should be illegal hahaha

[–]SirFadakar 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Chaotic good energy here

[–]jasonandhiswords 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I like this one, lmao

[–]VP007clips 24 points25 points  (1 child)

Asking for a link in a Reddit post by Rick Astley is dangerous. Anyways, here's the real one:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Music/comments/56cdgm/ama_im_really_rick_astley_i_swear_and_to/

[–]pugiianne 27 points28 points  (1 child)

Here you are, friend!

[–]MrAlek360 27 points28 points  (0 children)

These posts are the best kind of Rick rolls anyone could ask for

[–]Donterey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Until I read your comment, I really did think OP was just another Redditor

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I was so confused by this because I was like “Is this an elaborate Rick roll, because this guy looks like Rick Astley” and then looked at the username. I’m a bit slow sometimes.

[–]tttxgq 3225 points3226 points  (52 children)

(Never Gonna) Fill ‘er Up

[–]NorCalAthlete 778 points779 points  (30 children)

Not at current prices

[–][deleted] 148 points149 points  (18 children)

Back then, the price was $4.20 a gallon

[–]mryeet66 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh yeahhh prices went down then, it hasnt even gone above 4 yet here

[–]Caffeine_Cowpies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice

[–]Fuh_Queue_Dude 112 points113 points  (12 children)

Never gonna dick you down

[–]noisypeach 83 points84 points  (1 child)

That's a shame lol

[–]fpfx 16 points17 points  (0 children)

😳

[–]Rooonaldooo99 1179 points1180 points  (17 children)

I'm not trusting any fucking links in here

[–]wearenottheborg 218 points219 points  (3 children)

I mean, you can probably trust they'll be what you think they are!

[–]commandantKenny 50 points51 points  (2 children)

So far they are and I'm not disappointed!

[–]renassauce_man 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Don't you mean, they'll never let you down

[–]Gradual_Bro 600 points601 points  (12 children)

Crazy to think I can type something and Rick will see it, I love the internet!

Edit: The mad-lad actually did it https://imgur.com/a/l7x6zNo

[–]Kingcobra64 75 points76 points  (1 child)

The most surprising thing about this entire thread is that that link was not a Rick-roll.

[–]Gradual_Bro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Man I should have

[–]HGMIV926 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I love that he's just another redditor.

[–]rich1051414 272 points273 points  (16 children)

The burned in date on the right :D

Under the film cover, there was an inverted display with a a tiny incandescent bulb behind it that burned it physically into the film from behind :)

[–]shackelman_unchained 56 points57 points  (3 children)

That's a really cool TDL

[–]flyovermee 22 points23 points  (2 children)

“This Dude Learned”?

[–]BC_Trees 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Today Did Learnin'

[–]RainyCobra77982 188 points189 points  (32 children)

Why are celebrities on reddit so chill and normal most of the time lol

[–]BlatantConservative 133 points134 points  (11 children)

Cause they usually aren't trying to sell anything here. Besides themselves, but I can forgive them for that.

[–]RainyCobra77982 39 points40 points  (8 children)

I was hesitant to click on that hidden hyperlink and I... don't(?) regret it

[–]BlatantConservative 16 points17 points  (4 children)

Been a while since I've Pikachued all over the place, feels good.

[–]rooftops 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Are you THE one or are there many who do it? It's been so long since I've seen it I wasn't even expecting it lol

[–]MaxSupernova 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Cause they usually aren't trying to sell anything here.

Can we get back to talking about Rampart?

[–]qwell 43 points44 points  (12 children)

We very often forget that celebrities are just regular people with regular lives. I'm guilty of this. They sometimes just happen to be on our TVs or radios. It's a bit sad that we (as a society - not like you in particular) don't treat them that way. I can say with absolute certainty that there are a lot of celebrities who are here reading and posting all the time, without announcing who they are, with the same amount of chill. Rick and some others just happen to do so publicly without expecting much fanfare - just look at how many times /u/wil or /u/thisisbillgates have made posts/comments and nobody even noticed it was them.

Some are happy to do things like chat or sign autographs for fans, but in general, we just want to live ours lives as regular people without the constant attention that comes with celebrity status.

[–][deleted] 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Bill Gates had a post removed from r/Climate 2 days ago because the title of his post was not descriptive enough... I guess there are some things money can't buy 😂

[–]TPain850 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Vouch

[–]RainyCobra77982 16 points17 points  (3 children)

Yeah, we really do. u/lionsgate and u/govschwarzenegger are 2 others that come to mind

[–]Ask_Me_If_Im_A_Horse 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Pretty sure u/lionsgate is the LionsGate studio account and Nic Cage just answered through it. Happy to be wrong about that.

[–]fatbottomwyfe 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Yeah u/TPain850 has some down to earth posts.

[–]MinniMama 134 points135 points  (3 children)

I was like, “damn that guy looks like Rick Astley” then I saw the username

[–]sh4lt 15 points16 points  (0 children)

"damn this username sounds like Rick Astley" internet I tell ya..

[–]jdbulldog1972 53 points54 points  (0 children)

One of the truly great voices of our time! You still sound amazing! Love the YouTube video singing with the Canadian choir. However the best song you have ever done is “Keep Singing”. My soon to be 17 year old son is a bass in choir and has used that song as his audition song numerous times. Keep on being awesome!!!!

[–]mickystinge 96 points97 points  (2 children)

That'll keep rick rollin'

[–]pastelerias_moreno 155 points156 points  (52 children)

Back when gas prices were 1.29$ a gal

[–]Iron_Chic 93 points94 points  (28 children)

Gas was under $1.00/gallon still. I started driving in 1991 and it cost $10 to fill my tank.

[–]Docrandall 62 points63 points  (9 children)

Hi fellow almost old person. I got my license in late '89 and remember it being a really big deal when gas broke $1 in the early 90's.

[–]Chop_Artista 16 points17 points  (3 children)

I started driving when the planes hit the WTC. :/

at least I had a sweet Haro bike to get around.

[–]br0b1wan 12 points13 points  (7 children)

Gas dipped under $1 a gallon for a little while as late as 2000. Feelsbadman 😢

[–]LukeW0rm 9 points10 points  (4 children)

Yeah I was in high school in the early 2000s and remember thinking “people are gonna go bonkers if gas goes over $1”. So innocent haha

[–]SantaKlawz2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I paid 98 cents per gallon in California back in 1991 when I was on leave after the first Gulf War.

[–]itslenny 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Probably less. I got my license in 1999 and gas was about $1.20. I remember I’d drive to the next state (IN) and get it for under $1 usually.

[–]Wrenzo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And we were upset about that!

[–]martinkolar02 68 points69 points  (19 children)

What ride is that?

[–]maddy_trash 111 points112 points  (12 children)

[–]martinkolar02 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Great, thanks.

[–]omar_joe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Beauty

[–]rnilbog 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Oh shit, my dad had one of those when he was young. Bet he would have held onto it if he’d known how much it would be worth today.

[–]SandysBurner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s why it’s worth so much today.

[–]machinistjake 8 points9 points  (2 children)

It looks like a big body dodge convertible late 60's-early 70's?

[–]BuranBuran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's what I was thinking. '65 or '66 Dodge or Plymouth. Don't have time to search atm tho

[–]0nlyhalfjewish 59 points60 points  (6 children)

[–]IndubitablyMoist 41 points42 points  (3 children)

Not gonna lie, I got lowkey dissapointed it's a real link.

[–]relax-and-enjoy-life 21 points22 points  (1 child)

Rick! I just wanted to take this time to tell you (while the comments aren’t in the 1,000s) that my 11 year-old son is your biggest fan. It started with “Never Gonna Give You Up” like most people, but he really dove into your entire catalog and videos on YouTube. He loves your music and it really makes him happy! 😄

[–]westondeboer 376 points377 points  (28 children)

That phone booth is still there!

[–]_PukyLover_ 128 points129 points  (4 children)

No way man 🤣

[–]TugMe4Cash 76 points77 points  (3 children)

What's wrong with me, why did I click that?

[–]BlatantConservative 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Really only your own fault.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I opened this post I made a conscious not to press any link that might be posted here.

[–]Gregorwhat 54 points55 points  (1 child)

How did you find that!?!? I thought I knew where this was, but I was way off.

[–]Lakridspibe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Impressive

[–]Maebure83 15 points16 points  (4 children)

"There's a storm coming in..."

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Scrolled this far to find it. Definitely terminator vibes.

[–]capta1n_sarcasm 13 points14 points  (1 child)

What kind of car was that?

[–]Navaro27 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What were you driving Mr. Astley?

[–]Mrboring_man 11 points12 points  (2 children)

i can see this turning into one of those tony hawk moments where someone says he looks just like that "Never Gonna Give You Up" guy.

[–]elonmuskdick 19 points20 points  (3 children)

u/TheMalleableDuck do your thing

[–]archer4364 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rick Astley on Reddit now that’s something I can get behind

[–]SKWEEZY4REAL 4 points5 points  (1 child)

AY HOMEY IM GOIN ON MY 1ST US TOUR THIS SUMMER

DO U HAVE N E TIPS????

[–]mywerkaccount 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can we all appreciate how Rick has taken to memelife. Sure, it's a song that became a meme, but the way Rick accepted it and has continued to embrace it and the community here has made it so much more. We're now all invested in Rick and his life and posts like this that take us on that journey are legitimately rewarding. All celebrities should take note that not all memes are to belittle the content and if you understand it correctly it can be another step in the career of said celebrity. Thanks Rick.

[–]16thmission 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Never gonna fill you up.

[–]violentlymediocre_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the year my 12 year old self recorded myself singing Never Gonna Give You Up and sent it to a boy I liked. We’re married now.
