Who would've thought FSU-UNC would feature a top-5 team being upset, and that UNC would be the losing team?

An unranked FSU team upset a top 5 team led by Matt Ryan in 2007.

Truly is this the second coming of 2007.

[–]Virginia Techcm64 161 points162 points  (13 children)

A couple years ago, no way. This preseason, not that surprising tbh.

UNC had hella hype and FSU has a first year coach taking over a 6-7 program.

It’s the long con. 2018. FSU sleeper agent Mack Brown sees the writing on the wall with Willie Taggart, he’s not the one. The program is headed down a rough path and he knows he needs to help right the ship. But code name: “Brown Note” realizes he can’t just go back to coach there, that would be too obvious. Then, his opening comes at his old stomping ground; UNC. For years he had helped FSU rack up wins as the “coach” at UNC, and now he would need to go back to do the job just one more time. Quickly, he heads back, builds trust in the program through solid recruiting and close loses (might as well be wins, right?) Entering year two, he was positioned perfectly. Three wins and his team is somehow sitting ranked number 5 in the nation. He rolls into Tallahassee against a struggling FSU team, but that wouldn’t matter tonight. “Execute order 31 - 28.” Just what the doctor ordered, a big win over a top 5 team for the Noles to spark the energy that the team needed to get things going on the right track. “How do you get away with it?” Mack asks himself, kicking his feet up at the end of another perfectly executed inside job. “How are you so good?”

[–]Oklahoma • WisconsinJackalope117 252 points253 points  (5 children)

I think North Carolina would’ve won if they were unranked and FSU were #5 tho. It’s just that kind of year

[–]Florida State • ColoradoDammit_Jessie 53 points54 points  (3 children)

This was clearly a case of an underdog getting hyped and playing out of their minds against a top 5 team for the first half. Then half time kills their momentum and adrenaline and they play the second half worn out. It happens a lot but usually the favored team recovers and wins. Great win for FSU regardless.

[–]Florida State • Team ChaosAtreides17 27 points28 points  (1 child)

I think that stupid penalty at the beginning of the second half killed FSUs momentum, we marched down the field and were inside the 5, then end up getting no points. That helped UNC get back in it.

So with UNC’s loss and Georgia getting pantsed by Alabama, the likely #4 seed now in the playoffs is an Ohio State team that has not played a single game this season.

I dunno if that’s chaos or the status quo. Probably status quo. This season’s stupid.

Bama and Clemson are so far and above everyone else playing right now that no one deserves to be ranked 3-5ish.

FSU heart attack football, oh how I have missed you.

GG UNC, your QB is legit.

[–]Florida State • The Citadelbrechbillc1 24 points25 points  (3 children)

A few things:

  • First half playcalling and execution was unreal. Travis and Webb looked amazing and were a threat on offense.

  • Defense looked so much better. The front seven was getting pressure all night, forcing Howell to move or bail from the pocket. Led to some missed throws. I also loved the aggressive playcalling as well.

-Secondary needs work. Towards the end of the game, they were either getting beat, or committing PI. Would also look to see safeties over the top to prevent long plays.

-Some mentioned we took our foot off the gas in the second half. I disagree. Playcalling hadn’t changed, but two costly penalties on long drives plus two missed makeable fgs really hurt. The rest was UNC flipping momentum and putting us on our heals.

At the end of the day, we got a huge win. I don’t care if UNC should be ranked 5. This win could really go a long way to getting the program back on track. And I hope it is the first of many big wins during the Norvell era.

I’ll take it. We took down the number 5 team in the country in a rebuilding year. We almost blew it, but a wins a win! Jordan Travis is the real deal!

Anyone else see that dude high five like ten fsu players and then lick his fingers? Weird flex bro

[–]personthatiam2 38 points39 points  (1 child)

UNC waiting to pass downfield till the 2nd half is perplexing.

FSU still shot themselves in the foot way too much, they had so many opportunists to put that game away.

Announcer lady wants travis to fuck his shoulder up. ESPN hates us

Yeah we beat the #5 team but we’re trash. If that makes sense 😂

Norvell needs to quit being conservative so much and the defense needs to clean up their act with the awful penalties. Also fire the starting corners not named Asante into the sun

It's gonna be a great night in Tallahassee. But judging from the crowd it won't be so great 3-5 days from now.

What do you mean? They all had masks.

Those masks were around their necks, but most people breathe out of their necks right?
