It has been 5 weeks since I sent my additional documents for extension and I still haven’t received my post card. I know it’ll arrive but I’m anxious. I tried calling them multiple times but it just doesn’t connect.

[–]hanapyon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Went to the super sento for the first time in over a year. Vaccinated so I thought it should be ok. I just wanted some relax time.

There were so many big, bold signs saying "conversation is prohibited" but of course the obachans ignored those and continued talking loudly. The worst was this woman in the cold pool rinsing her face and mouth from the fountain going into the pool. Even under regular circumstances that's disgusting. Was the opposite of the relaxing experience I was hoping for.

I’ve been rejected from every promising job interview that would help me advance my career, more mail to pile with the 50 other rejection letters. I feel like I’m doomed to be at dead end jobs where they don’t take employees seriously forever.

I’m not angry, but depressed.

There is an area on my drive to work that used to full of trash from people dumping there. A couple weeks ago for about a week there was a lady out there every morning picking up trash. Area is completely clean with a please no trash sign up. The very next morning several bags of trash were dumped.

If I got a trail cam, set it up at these dump sites (there are many in my area), and got pictures of the people's face and license plate. 1. Would that be legal and actionable? And 2. What are the odds the police actually do anything if I showed it to them?

[–]buckwurst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you put up something that looked like a camera (search online for cheap fake ones) and a sign saying that there was a camera, that could fix the issue without doing anything actually illegal or questionable and if they get stolen/trashed, no big deal.

[–]EverythingIsOishii 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I admire your attitude. Sadly, I doubt the cops will. Not sure of the legality, but you’re creating work for them to do, and we all know they don’t like doing that.

[–]KameScuba沖縄・沖縄県 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda what I figured. Based on all I've read JPs don't seem to care about doing work

[–]DaitoBite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure sorry, but I have seen signs saying no dumping and that there are cameras around so maybe if that was also setup it might help the legality

Seeing an ever-increasing number of absolutely unhinged mental cases in public these days. I know the pandemic makes things harder, but man I hate seeing all these people not able to cope.

[–]KuriTokyo 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Were you in Shibuya yesterday too?

By the Hachiko entrance, there was a guy with a waste paper bin on his head, a guy with a plastic fork up his nose, a guy with a sign saying he wants a wife, and a woman with a loud speaker saying Corona is just the flu.

[–]ChiliConKarnage99関東・神奈川県 9 points10 points  (1 child)

The wife guy has been there for years, no?

[–]KuriTokyo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, seen the guy looking for a wife there for ages. Probably the same fake flowers too.

The "Corona is just the flu" woman has been there for over a year.

There was also a guy in a blue spandex bodysuit, but I don't think he was crazy, more of the outgoing type.

[–]Psychological_Tank_1 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Met a Japanese old guy today and told him I am from Hong Kong. He then said it must be hard living in Tokyo because Tokyo is such an expensive city, and told me that he is paying 600k yen rent per month🙂 Well? My small 1LDK home in Hong Kong costed me 400k per month🙂🙂🙂 And then he looked down on me cuz I told him I am living in Adachi. His first reaction was, it must be very cheap! I answered, yes, it is very cheap in comparison to my other properties in Tokyo, not mentioning the properties overseas☺️

I once attended my friend’s wedding in HK, it’s an amazing city with tons of great food! I’m a chinese-American living in Yokohama, although we have a Chinatown here, chinese food taste just mediocre and freaking expensive.

[–]AkrosRockBell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went there with my HK gf before corona. She wouldn't stop complaining saying how everything lacked any kind of taste and how the "viking" menus were a scam based on the smoke duck rations we got and how much time it took them to bring anything. She doesn't wanna go back to Yokohama since then xDDDD

I took a day off from work for two days now. I just don’t feel like working. I took a day off last week and a week prior to that. I don’t know what to do. My mental health is so bad and it’s affecting my work.

[–]Aeolun 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Either go to, or stay out of the office? Changing it up helps for me.

I have a watery, itchy right eye. I’m worried that I’ve picked up bacterial conjunctivitis again (I actually caught it ten years ago from a business card). And I’m equally worried that I may have passed it on to dozens of other people. When I think about the number of times a day that I hold hand straps on the commuter trains, or touch doorknobs, or panels at the ATMs ...

That moment when you push the button on the air con and it changes the temperature/mode on the screen of the air con remote but the air con doesn’t beep or get the message so you have to figure out what to do next, just forget about it or turn it off and turn it on again while being more careful about pointing the remote directly at the air con. Fucking hate it.

Finally happened after nearly 30 years driving in Japan - bicyclist ran a stop sign at speed and hit the rear passenger door of my SUV. Fortunately I was only doing about 20, so the cyclist wasn't injured, but now his insurance is trying to push for 60% liability for me.

Seriously.... guy ran a stop sign at speed from a blind side street, and hit my truck in the rear passenger door (meaning I was already almost through the intersection when he entered it) and is trying to lay majority fault on me.

This is probably ending up in court.

[–]ShadowSavant海外 6 points7 points  (1 child)

While I've no doubt it's a massive, massive pain in the arse, I figure if anyone on this forum is experienced enough to handle it, it's probably you. Granted, it's probably because of the multiple accidents you've detailed here, but...

[–]tokyohoon関東・東京都 🏍 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, I’m gonna talk to the dealer and request a quote including panel replacement. If they’re going to engage in fuckery, so am I.

[–]KuriTokyo 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I'm guessing your cameras are only front and back? Even so, that should be enough to show what was happening.

[–]tokyohoon関東・東京都 🏍 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The cameras don’t even factor into it, the impact from the bicycle is 2/3 of the way back on the vehicle. No way he could come to a complete stop at the sign, and then speed up again enough to impact my door hard enough to leave a dent.

[–]Aeolun 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Shouldn’t your own insurance go something like ‘uh, no’?

[–]tokyohoon関東・東京都 🏍 5 points6 points  (1 child)

The adjuster appears to be a bit of a moron, I’ll be talking with my actual agent on Monday. The adjuster actually had a discussion with the cyclists insurance company before she even talked to me to confirm the details of the accident, so she’s literally working with only their version of events.

Edit: and she still hasn’t talked to me directly.

I wanted to look at something in the Apple store tonight. I was told you can only get in the store for the next few weeks by reservation only. The staff said if I know exactly what I wanted I could be directed there buy it & leave. I said if I knew what I wanted I wouldn't come down to see it. I'll just look at stuff at Bic Camera instead & buy there.

[–]a0me関東・東京都 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Maybe they thought you’re an Apple user. Apple has a fairly small range of products and it isn’t rare to know what you want before going to the store. I’ve always seen the store as a way to check image / sound quality or keyboard feel in person with new iMac / MacBook when there was a major upgrade but apart from that there’s not so much to choose from.

[–]replayjpn 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I am a Mac user & needed some accessories that I really want to decide on after seeing. This semi complaint is more of an FYI in case anyone thought they can just go into an Apple store for the next few weeks.

[–]PeanutButterChicken近畿・大阪府 -4 points-3 points  (1 child)

It’s been like that since March 2020, nothing new.

[–]replayjpn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure I've bought something & went straight into the Apple Store in Ginza without being told I can only get in by appointment. The staff told me it's like this because of all the launches for the next 2 or 3 weeks. I don't remember not being able to enter the store without a reservation since March 2020.

This is my go to place for cords, cases, & small accessories.

I went and requested the forms for visa renewal. HR then turns around and tells me "we heard you're married so we'd rather you get a spousal visa, please do this as this is too much work". Meanwhile, they complain that it's hard to find another person with the correct certifications and who speaks multiple languages. Time for a new job I guess.

[–]Karlbert86 -1 points0 points  (11 children)

Are you actually qualified on paper (degree) for your job? It’s not impossible to get the visa if the company has a lot of sway, but ultimately they could be recommending you get a spouse visa for not only their best interest, but yours too.

[–]Throwingawaysssss 2 points3 points  (7 children)

Yes. I'm have the appropriate national certifications (国家資格)in Japan and I have the equivalent abroad so it's a fairly restrained field.

[–]Karlbert86 4 points5 points  (6 children)

Hmm I see. Then yea they are just being lazy in that case.

Still the only disadvantage to not getting a spouse visa (table 2 visa) is 1) liable for overseas inheritance tax and overseas gift tax from day (as opposed to after 10 years on a work visa or another table 1 visa) and 2) not liable at all for exit tax on a table 1 visa.

You can also apply for PR after 3 years of marriage which you can actually do on a work visa.

Edit: additionally when the government go full xenophobic again, table 2 visa holders have more protections for re-entry (as evident from April 2020 border closures).

[–]Throwingawaysssss 2 points3 points  (5 children)

That's actually a concern for myself. My grandfather is in his late 80s and I might be liable for a few hundred million yens(the amount will vary a lot depending on timing) in inheritance so I'm trying to keep my liability to a minimum.

[–]KuriTokyo 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I looked into inheritance tax and it doesn't kick in unless it's over ~$300,000.

Ask/check over at /r/JapanFinance

[–]Karlbert86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that makes more sense then. But worth after 10 years (of an aggregated 15 years) in Japan you would liable for overseas inheritance tax regardless of what visa you’re on.

[–]Tychonautica 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Sorry but this is dumb. He was qualified to get the visa the first time, and is arguably more qualified now with experience. Besides, if he doesn't get the work visa then he could just apply for the spouse one.

[–]Karlbert86 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not necessarily true. They could have got the visa with a previous job within the same visa scope, and then obtained this job on that same visa.

[–]Tychonautica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. Apologies. I assumed they were with the same company for the previous visa.

[–]stephaniecaseys 17 points18 points  (1 child)

God forbid HR or managers do their job and stay out of your personal life. If they sponsored you before, they can keep doing it. Lazy as hell.

[–]Throwingawaysssss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup! They did it 2 times before.

[–]Kurogane666 6 points7 points  (11 children)

I would definitely accept their timely suggestion that you are better off elsewhere. Is there any reason you prefer a sponsored work visa? just curious

[–]Throwingawaysssss 3 points4 points  (10 children)

That's the worst part. They don't want me to leave because they can't even find anyone. They're just trying to get rid of having to do that one task.

As for why I don't want a spousal visa, it requires my wife to be a guarantor which I'm not willing to do.

[–]Orkaad九州・福岡県 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Strike a deal with the guy from HR: no more work visa, but he'll have to be your guarantor for your spouse visa.

[–]Aeolun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She’s your wife mate. Whether guarantor or not she’ll be liable if you end up doing weird shit. Sending you back to your country is the least of the worries.

[–]Kurogane666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I quite forgot about the guarantor part. It's very infantilising in many ways. Good luck.

[–]PeanutButterChicken近畿・大阪府 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Are you planning on getting divorced soon? There’s no financial requirements for the spouse if you’re the breadwinner, just need to prove your marriage is legit.

Also makes it way easier to get PR if your spouse is Japanese.

[–]Throwingawaysssss 3 points4 points  (5 children)

No divorce in sight but, we're more or less a "marriage of convenience" between friends (i.e. for maximizing our finances.) so it's not exactly something I feel super comfortable asking her to do. I might look into it and consult with a lawyer to see.

[–]Karlbert86 2 points3 points  (4 children)

*maximizing our finances”

I am curious what you mean by this? How do both of you benefit financially by being married? Japan taxes people as individuals not married couples.

Obviously if one spouse is a financial dependent of the other then they financially benefit being married but that means in theory only 1 spouse financially benefits, not both…. Well I guess the earning spouse can claim the ¥380,000 dependent tax deductible, but that’s hardly an amount worth being married to someone you don’t love for.

I'm glad the weather is cooling down, because it means all of the dickheads who head down to the nearest river to have BBQs will stay the fuck home. I swear, every sunny weekend in the summer sees dozens of people out there grilling and getting drunk and leaving their shit wherever they please.

I took a walk down that way today and it was almost spotless. There was 1 can of beer...but that's way better than all the cigarette butts, bags of garbage neatly tied shut and left behind, and bottles of yakiniku sauce I see in August.

I'm serious. Don't go out into nature if you're gonna be a fucking idiot about it.

Somebody posted in a local group that they wanted to put together a game dev project. Didn't say from the beginning that he wanted to just keep making assets until a game is made instead of following proper game dev project steps even though he graduated from a uni in game programming and music engineering. Couldn't get him to help properly plan the game dev steps nor agree to them. (the first freaking step) Found out after almost a month after starting that he only wanted to do a tiny short (free/<$15) game while I've been submitting L2D art and game art/story designs for a mid length commercial game. (with 100% acceptance) Which would put my efforts way over his, considering shares. So after doing 100 hrs of art in a month I bowed out since this type of development rarely sees the light of day. Felt like I'd end up wasting my time with regrets eventually and that I'd become the actual director while doing the gui, vn art, bg art, and writing myself yet with only 50/50 story input control and sales share.

[–]yakisobagurl 10 points11 points  (4 children)

If I had a diary, I would document this there but I don’t, so here we are. It’s a long one!

A few days ago I went to bring some stuff to my brother who’s in hospital right now (he’s fine), and everything that could’ve gone wrong did lol.

Picture the scene. The hospital is open till 1700, so I have 40 mins. Walked to a Yamada Denki to buy some stuff, but arrived at the back in some seedy alleyway, deserted except for a man standing with his dog and smoking a cig. I pretend not to see him. No door, no entrance or access at all to the shop so had to walk 10 minutes up the street and back round to get to the entrance. Ok, I still have time.

Bought the stuff. Put the hospitals address into Google maps, start walking. I realise the direction I’m going seems off, and yep, I put the wrong place in Google maps. Spectacular. Okay, put the correct address in and now I’ve got 10 mins to make a 20 min journey. Awesome.

Start running. Sweat rolling down my back and face, people staring, thank god I wore appropriate footwear. About to pass out from the sudden exercise but I make it. Sign in with security, fill everything out while sweating profusely, my body is extremely moist and my face is red like a tomato, apologise 100 times for coming at 1659. All good.

Go to 10F, talk to the nurse’s station and they seem super confused to see me, and even more so when they hear the name I’m asking for. We go back and forth for a few minutes, I am still sweating visibly and radiating heat, when she says “wait, this is 9F” OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Extreme apologies while the whole nurse station laughs at me, ok, bye girlies, glad I provided some entertainment!

Get to the 10F and finally hand it over with no problems, and I get to go home and take a shower. A learning experience. At least my brother got his iPad. The end

[–]PeanutButterChicken近畿・大阪府 8 points9 points  (3 children)

I’m confused as to why you didn’t just go at 16:20 instead of waiting until the last second?

[–]yakisobagurl 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Haha! You’re probably right, but he’d called me that day to bring him the stuff, then I had to stop by his house to pick it up, then go. 40 mins should have been totally fine.

We’re talking walking from Noda to Fukushima, it’s really close

[–]acertainkiwi中部・石川県 2 points3 points  (1 child)

wellp, fucked up steamed rice for the first time in my life. Decided to use my InstaPot as my rice cooker and because it had no gradated lines, I decided to try the knuckle trick. Bad idea. It came out still wet. Short grain rice is not very forgiving when it comes to that. Next time I'll just measure the water.

[–]insideoutplanets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my experience, it is best to use brown rice (玄米) for Instant Pot. White rice requires very precise measuring, pot placement, timing, etc.

With brown rice, you can just eyeball it.

Mild complaints but while Thai restaurants are plentiful here, it's harder to get legit Laotian food (there are differences and I love Laotian style Laab/Larb Gai more than Thai style....plus Lao style papaya salad).

I also miss Thai/Laotian sticky rice.

Also kind of miss hearing both dialects of the Hmong language so been reaching out to my friends more but I lost a lot of it (I was only conversational in high school anyways), so I am lost.

All my food cravings this pregnancy have been foods that cost me dearly with heartburn or stomach issues later 🤣

I need to send documents abroad and because of bureaucracy stuff they keep asking for more and more paperwork. Spending 1-2万 through couriers every time I send 1-3 sheets is making the costs rack up quickly, although I do need them sent rather fast, within 3-5 days.

This time I decided to use EMS, it has been trustworthy, fast, and 4x cheaper.

2 days later, it hasn't even moved from the local post office where I personally left the documents to be sent. Argh.

Lol you married and had children with an impotent man with small testicles.

Your credit must be fucked up.

[–]tokoloshe_noms_toes 24 points25 points  (1 child)

My first mistake was marrying the dude in the first place. And selected impotence came right after the pregnancy stick showed the 2 lines. The small balls referred is for colorful storytelling as in the audacity of his assumption that anybody would agree to clean up their massive fuck up.

Is this a place to rant or not? Lol included where you may deem fit

[–]insideoutplanets 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't worry, some people do a complete 180 after getting married, so try not to let it get to you.

The best thing to do is take the initiative, swallow your pride and put your emotions aside, then convince them to sit down and discuss the issues as calmly as possible.

If you do that but can't get them to play, that's on them at that point.

[–]ExpatWanderer 8 points9 points  (7 children)

why is my sql script being reviewed by someone who doesn't understand our product's data model? why do I have to explain the entire complex data model just to fix a simple bug? ffs just no

[–]jaavee 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Sounds like it's time to find a new job.

[–]ExpatWanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for letting me know this isn't a common thing 😂

[–]kanben 4 points5 points  (1 child)

why is my sql script being reviewed by someone who doesn't understand our product's data model?

If I didn't understand the data model of a database which an SQL script is designed for, and I had to review it, I would be a very unhappy happy.

[–]ExpatWanderer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my unhappy happy manager then decides to transfer his unhappiness to already unhappy me

[–]rangi1218関東・東京都 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If they don't understand it anyway, you could just make up some mildly plausible bullshit about transistors and gibibytes, with the main point being that if you don't do it your way in the next few minutes it is going to mean a lot more work for them, but that's unfortunately unavoidable

[–]tiredofsametab 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Especially when I worked in healthcare, we had to send all non-select queries to DBAs to be checked and updated. It was annoying, but it ended up being good for everyone in the end (DBAs knew what was going on and could change anything on their end if needed, there weren't going to be obvious misses and updating the wrong thing with at least one other set of eyes, increased security, etc.) I could also argue explaining the whole thing is good as a last way to find any mistakes.

However, why is someone who doesn't know about the thing have to review the thing? That I don't get.

[–]ExpatWanderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do my own tests and even before it would get reviewed, but by someone who actually understands the data model. That guy isn't in the team anymore and suddenly a new manager has to review my work. And now he has a bunch of questions that would take longer to answer than the actual fix

Went on the yamanote for the first time in like a year. I only needed 1 stop in my transfer, the train was held 10+ minutes. So I went to a different line going to the same transfer, it was also delayed but for a different reason. I then see the yamanote start leaving the platform from across the rails. I proceed over to the yamanote again. It is delayed 5 minutes, but I get on and it goes. And that is how I spent 30 minutes going from Ebisu to Shibuya. Could've walked.

[–]PachiGT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took a half day this week, submitted the form in advance and it was approved. Took the half day off.

Now, I hear from my manager that there are two forms for taking days off and I submitted the one for half days and full days, not just half days. So, now they want me to redo the form and have it approved again, even though it's already happened.

Why are there even two forms? Japan...

[–]Urelsor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our compandy if you want to take a day/half-day off you send a mail/Line to our boss. If he does not reply within a day, it automatically means it's approved. But he usually approves always anyway. Afterwards send a mail to everyone and tell they you take off.

Guess I got really lucky with my company.

[–]Isaacthegamer九州・福岡県 4 points5 points  (3 children)

It's thankfully all digital at my company, but I wouldn't be surprised if they printed them out and saved them at the head office with a few hankos on it to make sure it's legit...

[–]yvr2kix 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Digital is good!

This year the labor insurance package from the government had a blank piece of paper folded around the other papers. (Amazingly it didn't require a stamp though!)

From this year self-employed people have to do their tax return online in order to claim a certain deduction. That should reduce paper right? Wrong. This year the package in addition to all the regular instructions also included a reminder that it should be filed online, instructions for requesting help by phone, and instructions for requesting help by FAX!!!

Maybe they are trying to subsidize the paper industry.

[–]jaybun87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait till you find out what hoops you have to jump through to be allowed to keep your receipts digitally instead of as paper for 5years. Also the form to do that is of course a paper one.

[–]fugu1004 23 points24 points  (13 children)

I effin hate banks here.

First time went to an SMBC branch to make new account today. Brought everything that they accept as per their website: zairyu caard, passport, inkan etc. And I can speak Japanese; I helped lots of SSW and ginou jishusei open up bank accounts right after they entered Japan.

The thing is, I just changed my visa from 5 years Humanities to become 1 year Spouse of Japanese last month. At first they accused me I just got entered Japan recently so they cannot accept my application. Goddammit I have lived here more than 4 years! I just changed the visa! Told them that and they ask for old zairyu card. What??? I think it is normal for anyone to dispose the old zairyu card after they get the new one?? I mean not everyone keep such old ID s.

Then they ask my passport, but the passport just got renewed in March this year hence there is no stamp no nothing inside. They also ask for the old passport to proof that I entered the country long time ago.

Let's say I have the old passport but then I have to go home first take the old passport and come again and waste time when it is so hard to get out of office in the middle of the work time?

At this point I argued that it is unfair, then they said they may offer an account with many limitations (cannot transfer between banks etc) whats the point of making one?? I was planning to make cash card first then debit card since i want to use the debit for me and husband's daily groceries and shopping.

I tried to show them I had cash cards from MUFG with debit card also, and yucho, both were issued in 2017 (it is written on the card) and I have Rakuten card which means its impossible to have CCif I just came here last month, but they dont see them as something that can proof that I dont plan to do money laundering and other financial crime. I was literally told this, so at this point I snapped and rudely left the branch.

I spent 4 years following all the rules paid insurance and pension and being a good gaijin, and still they think I am planning a crime because they only see the period of my zairyu card. Besides dont they effin knows that gaijin cannot make new visa and enter Japan right now? HOW CAN I JUST ENTER THIS COUNTRY FOR THE 1st TIME LAST MONTH????

PS: I understand there are other gaijin friendly banks such as Sony etc but I have reasons to try SMBC

[–]KuriTokyo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I got the letter from my bank checking to see if I was funding international terrorism, I took it into the bank to get it filled out properly. the staff helped me fill it in and I posted it to the bank. They sent it back to me saying I had done it wrong, so I went back to the bank for help. This happened 4 times.

The 4th and final time I had to wait 90 minutes. I couldn't wait any longer so I walked out. A staff chased me out and said that if there was a problem, they'd fix it themselves. WHY THE EFF DID I HAVE TO WAIT 90 minutes then?!!!

[–]dagbrown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The last time I opened a bank account at SMBC, I used my driver’s license as my sole piece of ID. That seemed to be entirely sufficient to prove I was serious about living here because they didn’t ask for anything else at all.

[–]Elvaanaomori 17 points18 points  (2 children)

At first they accused me I just got entered Japan recently so they cannot accept my application.

We went with my wife a few month ago to open a second account for me at MUFG to track family expenses on a separate account.

Same, I just had renewed my zairyu card. The teller started telling me they have no way to verify I had not just entered Japan. "Mam, I have an account in this branch for 5 years, I get my monthly salary on it and use it pretty much every day. Please call your manager or someone competent"

20 seconds later "my boss said it will do for this one time"

And, that was AFTER she made me confirm everything from the house loan, name etc. HOW CAN I HAVE A HOUSE LOAN IF I JUST ARRIVED???

[–]fugu1004 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Such a stupid and inefficiently waste of time by doing such confirmation verification etc. Glad that your application got accepted.

[–]Elvaanaomori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are so drilled into following protocol that they never think even a little bit...

It was just for a second account, no credit card nothing, just the account...

[–]ITS_A_GUNDAAAM関東・東京都 14 points15 points  (1 child)

You should bring a copy of your juminhyo, that will list the exact date you came to Japan and your status of residences.

[–]silverredbean関東・神奈川県 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this.

[–]CatBecameHungry 11 points12 points  (3 children)

I think it is normal for anyone to dispose the old zairyu card after they get the new one??

I never get rid of old ID cards if they can still possibly be useful. Especially a zairyu card which shows period of stay and other useful information.

(I still think them not accepting you was a problem, just addressing your point of disposing of old cards)

[–]fugu1004 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yes, I actually have the old one.

I just want to emphasize in this case that banks don't mention this rule publicly so that gaijins can get more prepared when they come to a branch.

When we pick up the new zairyu card at immigration, it's usual to hear the officer said "shobun shite kudasai" (pls dispose the old card) so it is a common sense that we dispose it. If banks (and sometimes sim card providers etc) openly announced the detailed criteria of accepting gaijins applications then we will surely think keeping old documents is common sense.

Oh how they love inefficiency and wasting people's time.

[–]Zwingozwango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only had Japan Post, Sony, 7/11 banks in Japan. All have been trouble-free except for one “local” prefectural bank which were slow as hell to open.

Any particular reason why you need SMBC? There’s plenty of banks now that you can open online without ever stepping into a bank branch.

[–]Zwingozwango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep - I keep all my old passports, zairyu cards, drivers licenses. Doesn’t take up much space and never know when you’ll need it. (As evidenced above)

[–]Tychonautica 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Go to a different branch (with more supporting documents) and try again. Sometimes the staff at a certain branch are incompetent.

[–]kanben 3 points4 points  (15 children)

All the Japanese companies offering servers and VPS have shit offerings. Thankfully Vultr and Linode have a Japan region, but they still get pretty expensive when you want high performance. There's AWS too, but I don't want to get stung by bandwidth charges if I get attacked randomly.

I wish there was a provider like OVH or Hetzner in Japan that provided reasonably priced dedicated servers.

[–]zcmy日本のどこかに 0 points1 point  (14 children)

At this point i'm keeping my offsite at OVH in europe since it's still cheaper and more higher bandwidth than anything offered in the japanese sphere for what i need (gigabit up/down, 20TB of storage)

[–]kanben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do the same if I didn't need the low latency :(

[–]Elvaanaomori 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Do you still have gigabit up/down from japan? If so there is no point in having a host here...

[–]zcmy日本のどこかに 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get 200mbps on my home line from my server. Work has full gigabit.

[–]talsit近畿・大阪府 0 points1 point  (10 children)
