For the last few years, I typically gravitate toward Stereolab just because they have an equally huge and interesting catalog of varying styles built up over decades.
Never heard, what should I listen to first?
You should listen to " Mars Audaic Quintet" first
Gimme your favorite AnCo albums and I'll let you know where I'd start. Dots and Loops and Emperor Tomato Ketchup are good intros though.
Top 5 - Spirit, Feels, Sung Tongs, Centipede hz, Danse Manatee
Emperor Tomato Ketchup, Dots & Loops, Oscillions from the Anti-Sun.
You're just me, start with Dots and Loops and explore from there. The setlist they played during their 2019 tour is also a good taste test and how I mainly started getting into them.
Stereolab is great. Definitely in my top 10. I would start with
Sound dust Emperor tomato ketchup Dots and loops Cobra and phases group play voltage in the milky night
These albums are the equivalent of animal collectives sung tongs feels strawberry jam era
AnCo are at the top of my list, the rest of the list would be Cocteau Twins, Beach House, Sufjan Stevens, My Bloody Valentine, Grouper, Pavement, Low, Sleater-Kinney, Sonic Youth, GY!BE, and The Velvet Underground. These bands are impossible to rank on a list for me, but they might go in that order? Idk
I predict you’re…46 years old? No shade, I’m in my mid-40s myself, I’m just saying that 90s indie rock cluster says a lot. But WHERE’S POLVO?!
😏 I’m 23! I just gravitate towards all that, I guess. And I really like Polvo, but admittedly I don’t listen to them as often. Very influential in the way I try to play guitar tho
Damn, the kids are all right!
🫡
Ever listen to Built To Spill? Pretty sure you'd like them based off of that list up there.^
I like them a lot, they’re great
Perfect from now on is goated
25 and I dig your list! Haven’t listened to Low or Sleater-Kinney too much so maybe I gotta give them more of a listen
I’m 36 and I like all these except grouper
Good list, know most of these guys
Where to start for Sonic Youth?
Daydream Nation is one of their best but in terms of most accessible I would say Goo, or like the other reply said, Sister is a good entry point
I'd say Sister
Honestly while I’d heard them on and off for years, Murray Street is my favorite and the one that grabbed me. Daydream is great as well.
Sonic Nurse and Goo are also worth diving into
I’m an EVOL man m’self.
EVOL is my favorite but I usually recommend Sister or Daydream to new listeners.
Can, Gentle Giant, Built to Spill, blackmidi, this heat, MGMT, spirit of the beehive, fleet foxes
CAN is top tier no doubt
Spirit of the Beehive has definitely been a favorite of mine the last few yrs. Vitamin C is a dope song I’ll have to check out more CAN
Tago mago and Future days for sure
And Ege Bamayasi and Unlimited complilation are also super great!
Boards of Canada and Black Moth Super Rainbow
Love me some BMSR/Tobacco
Yyyyyeeeessss
Big Thief, Yo La Tengo, Stereolab, David Byrne/Talking Heads, XTC
Big thief is so great! Saw them live recently
stereolab and xtc are so real, i feel like skylarking gives me the same feelings that anco does but from a different style its quite interesting
Woo for XTC. Like animal collective, I think they are one of the biggest underrated bands out there.
I just got into XTC a couple months ago, and Skylarking was my intro. That was my first impression as soon as I heard it. Andy Partridge may be one of my new favorite songwriters.
If you like skylarking then you will like a wizard a true star by Todd rundgren
Avey Tares slasher flicks is a great band
Aphex Twin, Death Grips, Black Moth Super Rainbow / TOBACCO, and Lil Ugly Mane to name a handful lol, too hard to pick one
I like the cut of your jib
Björk, Microwave, The Mars Volta, Fiddlehead, Turnstile, Brand New, Kurt Vile, mewithoutYou and Fleet Foxes to name a few.
Bjork is massively overlooked by so many.
I think she is one of the most important women in pop music of the last 30 years. Almost every album is groundbreaking, and different. She really pushes music and conceptual art with everything she does. The queen.
100% her music from the 90s was so far ahead of it’s time. Bjork is amazing
Didn’t expect to see mewithoutYou here. Hell yeah
To me, anco and mwY are just their own iterations of modern day folk music.
mewithoutYou was my drive home playlist this evening. They might be up there as some of my favorite lyricists. To me, A Glass Can Only Spill What It Contains is perfect in that I wouldn't change a single thing about it and is everything I could wish for in a song.
Red Cow? Lyrically poetic perfection in my mind. Who else writes songs like that and actually seems like they know what they're talking about?
The Fox, the Crow, and the Cookie becomes something greater than the sum of its parts.
They're just so earnest in their story telling and do it often with a beautiful simplicity. In my view, mewithoutYou is the equal(ish) and opposite of Animal Collective.
Edit: special mention to The Angel of Death Came to David's Room
Did you grow up in Pennsylvania too? Lol
lol not quite but the state has put out some great bands!
Grateful Dead, Ween, Pink Floyd, Gizz, Kikagaku Moyo
Kikagaku Moyo were soooo good live.
This guy definitely does drugs
I used to do drugs.
I still do drugs, but I also used to do drugs too
I’m a p fish and tGD phanner
AC got me into the dead which got me into phish pretty heavy
We are a three fold family
p fish best band
I don’t like music
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard!
These guys are on fire
The hardest working band in Australia
And in the world
Just got into them. So much backlog to listen to.
Do the three microtonal albums in a row, they all fucking rip
Sonic Youth
Fuck yeah!!!
Tame Impala and MGMT, along with ANCO these are my big top 3.
Nice Innerspeaker is one of my favs
Lonerism is my favorite album of all time :)
Boredoms, Polvo, Gang Gang Dance, Deerhunter, Acid Mothers Temple, Out Hud, mbv, Basement Jaxx, MF DOOM, Godley & Creme
The Mars Volta, Grizzly Bear, Mimicking Birds, Dan Deacon, Pink Floyd, etc.
At the moment, it's Oval
Saw him live way back in the day opening for my first Tortoise show. There was one member of our friend circle in attendance who wasn’t a big post rock head—he preferred street punk and oi—and he insisted that Markus Popp was just playing Tetris on his laptop.
Markus Popp plays some damn good Tetris on that laptop!
I would love to see Oval live, him and Pepe Bradock!
Popp is such a fucking cool album, been listening to it non-stop for the last couple weeks.
XTC, Steely Dan, Flaming Lips
sweet trip
my top 3 currently are:
WHY?
Father John Misty
Prince Daddy & the Hyena
Some of other big ones of all time for me are Kate Bush, of Montreal, Pavement, Neutral Milk Hotel and Pixies.
More recently, Shabazz Palaces and Swans have been getting a lot of play in the rotation.
For what it’s worth, I have literally never gone on 4chan or /mu/ lol
Radiohead for sure. Wilco is definitely up there.
I really like Four Tet, Flying Lotus, King Gizz, Osees - that pretty much rounds out my top5 with AC at the tippy.
Neutral Milk Hotel, Modest Mouse, and Childish Gambino.
Grateful Dead
Alex G
Radiohead, boards of Canada
Black Dresses, The Knife, Big Thief
where are all my fellow microphones / mount eerie / phil elverum fans at
Seriously The Glow pt 2 is a top 10 album ever
🙏
Destroyer and Mac Demarco, these days.
The Beatles
Thee Oh Sees/OCS/Osees. "Help" and "Mutilator, Defeated at Last" are my fav albums of theirs. I still listen to em, but I always find myself going back to their garage rock reverb/delay filled albums.
I seriously love the Osees so much. One of the best American “rock” bands right now imo
Right now my favorite band in the world is Gilla Band formerly know as Girl Band. I highly suggest people check them out if they like unique, chaotic, avante garde music. Great live shows as well.
Vocals like a lounge singer on a bad acid trip
Guitar uses lots of effect pedals, often sounds like an airplane nosediving into a mountain
Bassist sometimes uses a vodka bottle as a slide
Drummer is also great
Lately I find myself also listening to The Beach Boys, Beach House, Fleet Foxes, Playboi Carti, Magdalena Bay, Roxy Music, Yo la Tengo, Alex G, Young Thug, Yaeji, Caroline Polacheck, Cocteau Twins, and The Flaming Lips. Hard to pick a favorite but I'd have to go with The Beach Boys. The harmonies are transcendent.
Pavement
Not just bands, but:
Joanna Newsom, Beyoncé, Robyn, Jessie Ware, Björk, Big Thief, Beach House, Perfume Genius, A Tribe Called Quest, Vampire Weekend, Weyes Blood.
Completely different feel, but mine are CAKE and Jukebox the Ghost.
I'm also finally starting to get into Radiohead, but I haven't listened to their stuff enough to call them a favorite band of mine yet.
I go back to Motorcade of Generosity all the time.
Radiohead MGMT Pink Floyd
MGMT, Beach House, Toro y Moi, Ariel Pink, Kishi Bashi, Fleet Foxes, Tame Impala, Porches, as far as active bands go.
I've got quite a few, in no specific order:
Fleet Foxes, The Shins (anco should cover sleeping lessons), Tonstartssbandht, Bjork, Tame Impala, Eels, Sonic Youth, Genesis/Phil Collins, Cults, Vampire Weekend, King Gizzard... there's so much good music out there!
Wincing The Night Away is great stuff 👍
Prolly a tie between MGMT and The Decemberists
Rn it’s been Leonard cohen and red house painters
Real fuckin’ shame about Mark Kozelek
Unfortunately he’s awful
i like Palm, Ween, MF DOOM, Kendrick, japanese artists such as Masayoshi Takanaka and Tatsuro Yamashita, Beach House, Sufjan, the Beatles, etc
Jay reatard, real estate, ducktails, ariel pink, black lips, spectrals, dog bite, holograms
Alice In Chains
Alice In Chains
Built to Spill, The Mountain Goats, The Allman Brothers
Salem, dinosaur jr, bodyguard , g unit , unwound , the cure , chief keef
Bon Iver
Bon Iver is a top favorite for sure, specifically the album 22, A Million which was a whole sonic experience for me. Also Fleet Foxes, Boom Box, Bonobo, Random Rab, Of Montreal, Sylvan Esso, and CSN
Fleet Foxes as of late
King Gizzard, Talking Heads, Grateful Dead, Genesis / Peter Gabriel, Radiohead
Edit: Gotta add Fleet Foxes
Cocteau twins, black moth super rainbow, beach boys, XTC, modest mouse, yo la tengo, and ween are my favorites
Deerhoof!
Death Grips
Pavement
M83, XTC, Arcade Fire, Pink Floyd, Daft Punk are all good contenders for second place.
MGMT
Radiohead, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Duster, Ween, The Residents, Run The Jewels, Björk, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Kanye (well, before that incident), MGMT, MF DOOM, Kendrick Lamar, Backxwash, Portishead, Wilco, Neutral Milk Hotel, Death Grips, System of a Down, Massive Attack, UNKLE, My Bloody Valentine, DJ Rozwell, Leyland Kirby
Odd Future, Vampire Weekend, Passion Pit, TV Girl,
For me it looks something like
-
Radiohead
-
Pink Floyd
-
Arcade Fire
-
Animal Collective
Pavement
Frank Ocean, Radiohead, the Beatles, Broadcast.
Alvvays, Beck, Stephen Steinbrink atm
Refused - Songs to fan the flame of discontent. Enjoy!
Pepe Bradock, too!
AnCo, WilCo, and Yo La Teng(Co) are my 3 favorite bands, generally speaking...
Althought this year the bands I've been most obsessed with are Japanese Breakfast and Big Thief.
Right now I'm really into The Garden
I love Yo La Tengo 🥰
Weird one but My Chemical Romance. Im not too big into psych music other than AnCo, MGMT and maybe one or 2 others.
Anco + mgmt arent very psychedelic imo. Not compared to real psych bands like Love, Country Joe & The Fish, West Coast Pop Art Experiment, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Ultimate Spinach, Liquid Visions, etc
Low
Probably Bjork or Mice Parade.
velvet underground, sleater kinney, the breeders
Tame Impala, Washed Out, Arctic Monkeys
Feel it all around is one of my favorite songs!
They Might Be Giants, with Rush, Oingo Boingo and The Weakerthans making up the top 5.
Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys
Sam Evian, Frankie and the Witch Fingers, Caribou, Mildlife, Brainstory
Autechre, black midi, death grips, Grateful Dead
Grateful Dead and Pavement :)
Broken Social Scene
I’m partial to Deerhoof and The Shins
Grateful Dead, Talk Talk (specifically Spirit of Eden), Ween, Robbie Basho, Robert Glasper, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Pallbearer, Tool, Happy Mondays. That's the quick list. I like too many genres to have one. Anco is at the top though
Death Grips
The answer is The Beatles and/or Grizzly Bear
Fleet Foxes, Dirty Projectors, Paramore
Tame Impala, The Mars Volta, Death Grips
yo la tengo, radiohead, coil, spiritualized, swans, low, sonic youth, gybe, king crimson, pavement, mbv, have a nice life
Radiohead, Bjork, Boards of Canada, Dan Deacon, Charli XCX, Daft Punk
Definitely of Montreal. I know it's basically just Kevin now, but there are just so many great albums in the entire catalog. However, I think the last album I was head over heals for was Aureate Gloom.
Rest of top 10 would be: Radiohead, Velvet Underground, Can, Aphex Twin, Madlib, Flying Lotus, Pixies, Stereolab, Beatles.
Might be cheating cuz some of these are solo artists rather than bands, but whatever.
Also, AC are waaaaaayyyyyyy up higher than the number 2 and all the rest.
Very solid list, covering a lot of bases with those artists!
The flaming lips, Radiohead, pavement, mgmt Soccer mommy, neutral milk hotel, bright eyes, sebadoh,
Talking Heads and The Avalanches
Beach House, The Books, Phoebe Bridgers, JPEGMAFIA, The Microphones/Mount Eerie/Phil Elverum, and Death Grips right off the top of my head.
If I had to pick a favorite I think I would go with The Books. they introduced me to a whole new style of sound the same way anco did, and the way they use samples leaves a lot open to the interpretation of the listener in a similar way.
I don’t know, maybe Lush? not much really compares for me
constant battle between modest mouse, ween, radiohead, and my chemical romance lol.
Deerhoof, they have as idosyncratic an approach to rock/"guitar music" as anco does to pop, if that makes sense. Tied for all time fav band.
Easy black moth super rainbow
A composer I was obsessed with for years: Shostakovich. The story around his life is absolutely wild - he was Stalin’s favourite in an era where artists disappeared if their vision didn’t match his own.
This meant that Shostakovich had the challenge of burying meaning deep enough in his music that it would evade the sensors, but close enough to the surface that the people would feel it.
Violin Concerto 1, symphony 1, symphony 10.
They Might Be Giants
Huge fan of a little band called Nurses, their albums Apples Acre and Dracula are really good. Very fond of Okkervil River, Midlake and the Wrens.
Death Grips
DA BEACH BOYS
Animal Collective is no doubt my favorite band of all time but they defo stick out like a sore thumb sitting next to my other favorite bands, which mostly consist of PHxC, Swancore and Metalcore outfits. Deftones, Hail the Sun, The Fall of Troy, SYSC, Circa Survive, Ling tosite and Converge to name a few.
Animal Co fans have the best taste
Grateful Dead, Radiohead, The War on Drugs, Goose, Tedeschi Trucks Band
Neutral Milk Hotel, MGMT, Black Midi, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard
The Dead, Phish, Casiopea, Coltrane’s quartet from ‘59-‘63, any group Barry Harris, Bud Powell or Grant Green were in, Steely Dan, John McLaughlin trio, Parliament-Funkadelic, the Meters, Medeski Martin & Wood/Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood
Grizzly bear, the dodos, TV girl, future islands, aphex twin, nujabes, c418
Megafaun, Mo Lowda and the Humble, Twiddle, Widespread Panic, My Morning Jacket, Portugal. The Man, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Hobo Johnson, Ween, Flying Lotus and the good ol' Grateful Dead
Top 5 in no particular order: Little Dragon, Peter Gabriel, Between the Buried and Me, Pusha T, Do Make Say Think
Panteón Rococó.
I love Mexican rock.
Tonsstartsbandht. Best band
Pond, KGATLW, Tame Impala, Vulfpeck
MGMT
Brian Wilson (Beach Boys), Beatles, Pink Floyd, George Gershwin
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Black Country, New Road
Stereolab, Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Boris, Ariel Pink, Pavement, MBV
Why?, La Dispute, Arcade Fire, Grizzly Bear, Fiona Apple, Brian Wilson, of Montreal, Mitski, Aesop Rock... Clearly pretty eclectic.
I'm only really including bands that I've listened to over the course of multiple years. I have newer favorites that are developing, like over the last year I've been trying to make a concerted effort to get into more hip-hop and am listening to some of the all time classic albums in that genre. Tyler, the Creator is up there now I think.
For hip hop check out Nujabes - Modal Soul and Eyedea - By the Throat
Oh man I used to love Nujabes when I was younger. Rest in peace, what a loss to the music world :( I should definitely revisit him, thanks for that.
sonic youth bad brains sepultura + 100s more
Women, The Caretaker, Cindy Lee
Steely Dan, Grizzly Bear, R.E.M., Palm
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Electric Sox.
