HBO greatest hits: Gennadiy Golovkin by kindersuppliesDiskoBoss in Boxing

I remember watching my first boxing fight live and it was the Curtis Stevens fight.. I got so hooked into boxing and Golovkin was my favorite from the get go. I loved that he knocked people out not just by brute force he was also technical.. his Jab was unmatched, I am still searching for a similar style of fighter to support but I just cant find one nowdays.. we can all agree that Except Tyson Fury the charisma and anticipation for huge fights is not the same as it once was.. but maybe I am being a bit biased as a huge tripleG fanboy..

My fav GGG moments were watching Geale’s face change from “ive got him” to “oh shit” when watching GGG take Geale’s best shot and return fire for the KO in slow mo, and seeing Lemieux peek over at the ref looking for a stoppage while under defense. Lemieux’s hair seemed to have a video game effect on GGG’s punches, showing the damage in the hair flipping high and sweat flying off. Sigh. Better days.

GGG is definitely in the top 5 best middleweights ever imo. He had so many défenses but was unlucky that he didn’t get the best fights for so many years. At least, he proved that he was elite when he beat Jacobs, derevchanko and arguably Canelo. The guy will always have my respect and it’s a shame he isn’t gonna box for much longer

I saw GGG fight for the first time when he fought Proksa. It was the first time I saw either fighter fight and I was telling all my friends how smooth and unpredictable Proksa was. I was explaining in great detail how his awkward style and southpaw stance would be too much for this Golovkin guy.

And then GGG went on to destroy him in like 5 rounds.

Anyway the point of the story is that I don’t know shit about boxing.

Controversial opinion. But I don’t think GGG should be too far up the p4p rankings due to his chin. He has an immense chin and we all know it, and a great boxing ability, but let’s be honest, the reason he didn’t get KOd by Canelo was because of his reliance to just take shots. Again, great boxer, but if he had the average chin I don’t think he would be that high up the undefeated list. He would have been sparked at some point

Edit: Thanks for the Gold to whoever gave it. I really didn’t expect it for such a controversial opinion.

For those disagreeing, let me clarify, I believe GGG is a great boxer. No doubt. But he has relied a lot on his chin throughout his career. He even has a strategy of tucking his hands on his face and letting fighters hit him so he can take advantage with a counter punch to a guard less opponent. For me, that’s a great strategy, but you’re getting hit as a result - which isn’t the aim of boxing. I much rather lomachenkos strategy of breaking guard by pulling their hands down. He doesn’t take damage in the process and actually exposes his opponents face.

For me P4P has always meant that regardless of what division your in, your boxing skill level will far outmatch your opponents. This is why I truly believe Canelo is actually the P4P number one right now. Although he’s got a great chin (as was displayed in his GGG2 fight), he is now pretty much a master in art of defence and avoiding punches and is actually becoming damn near impossible to hit now. We saw this in the Jacobs fight more prominently. I’m hesitant to put Lomachenko so far up as although he’s an absolute marvel to watch. If he was in a heavyweight category, his main assets of speed and light footsteps wouldn’t be there as much. He’s a great boxer and for me one of the nicest to watch, but he again relies on a physical asset that disappears when you change the weight.

This is why - although I’m not a fan of him as a person - Floyd is also one of the P4P goats for me. He never got hit and you could apply his skills in any weight division and they would give him the same success (pretty much)

Hopefully that clears it up.

Man what a fucking relentless monster. As the great Nandor the Relentless once said: “I used to be a very ferocious soldier in the Ottoman Empire. Which meant a lot of killing, a lot of pillaging. They’d say “Have mercy! Stop pillaging me!” No! I’m pillaging everyone! You included! I was relentless. They’d call me Nandor the Relentless because I just never relent.”

GGG the Relentless.

Edit: Holy shit. What a dumb fucking comment on my end to get my first gold! Thank you for watching the same dumb show I like to watch!

Never forget how he beat Canelo twice only for the Beefhead to refuse him a third fight.
