This is a viscoelastic fluid. It's the elastic component that pulls it back into the cup, not the viscous component.

[–]orangekid13 137 points138 points  (6 children)

[–]flume 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's the one about skipping the first 30% of every YouTube video, right?

[–]redfacedquark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the one about CPU power doubling every 18 months.

[–]YAAAAAASsica 25 points26 points  (6 children)

Came here to find this term. 👍 You pour over a cup of viscous honey like this and you just have sticky fingers

[–]SkollFenrirson 13 points14 points  (5 children)

It's a viscous cycle

[–]althyastar 8 points9 points  (4 children)

I can't bee-lieve you just said that.

[–]983115 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I was gonna say this damn Reddit hivemind

[–]wistfulfern 63 points64 points  (23 children)

It's a simulation.

[–]OgreSpider 45 points46 points  (10 children)

Wow that is a good SSS shader on that skin then

[–]whitt_wan 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Ayy. This guy 3d models!

[–]OgreSpider 1 point2 points  (2 children)

It's my bread and butter!

Making some flower crowns right now, which is nowhere near as cool as that skin shader, lol.

[–]whitt_wan 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What program are you using? I'm a blender man. Only been using it for about a year and have barely scratched the surface

[–]ianthrax 2 points3 points  (3 children)

SSS = Super Shady Stuff?

[–]OgreSpider 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Sub surface scattering! If you hold your hand up to a light, there is a sort of orangey glow at the edges of it. It's not totally transparent, but some light gets through. The effect where light hits your dermis layers and scatters sideways, so the rays don't go straight through, creates that edge glow. SSS is one of the harder things about human flesh to make look realistic in 3d.

[–]ianthrax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazing! Thanks for the explanation!!

[–]Saotik 1 point2 points  (1 child)

All that time making a perfect simulation and skin shaders with detailed ray tracing, only to hide it behind poor exposure and simulated light flicker in the render. Hmm...

[–]Recyart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Imperfections are part of the realism!

[–]Pyrross 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You are a simulation

[–]gingerlovepoopface 5 points6 points  (4 children)

WE’RE ALL IN A SIMULATION

[–]stinkysocksincloset 1 point2 points  (1 child)

No just you. We all got out a week ago.

[–]gingerlovepoopface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FREE ME MORPHEUS

[–]crowleytoo 21 points22 points  (3 children)

it's not a simulation, it's just black slime in a martini glass and the video is slowed down and the person is jiggling it back and forth

[–]HearingNo8617 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

with modern simulation it can be impossible to tell the difference sometimes though not necessarily in this case

[–]crowleytoo 2 points3 points  (1 child)

i have a degree in video game programming so i have a lot of experience with 3D simulation and a few things give this one away. first, the finger tips are a little too matte and fuzzy, usually stemming from actual fingerprints. second the shadows on the palm of the hand are a little too diffused with a lot of light complexity, and third the shadow on the wall behind the camera is so subtle yet still there where a 3D artist would usually either go for a full background with full shadows to show off that cool slime's silhouette or no background at all.

[–]xinocollas 774 points775 points  (13 children)

the glass of anxiety fluid

[–]Flaky_Explanation 240 points241 points  (7 children)

Venom's currently exploring the depths of wine's philosophy by putting himself in a glass.

[–]Barlowan 37 points38 points  (3 children)

My thoughts exactly. 15 seconds of pure concentrated anxiety.

[–]Keeyes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It pairs well with a bleach martini. Shaken. Not stirred.

[–]letskeepitmovin 259 points260 points  (10 children)

A glass of Symbiote

[–]forhuden90 81 points82 points  (6 children)

A glass of venom if you will

[–]happyhealthybaby 39 points40 points  (1 child)

Go home, Venom! You’re drunk!

[–]james_randolph 26 points27 points  (0 children)

We, are...trashed

[–]Sovem 2 points3 points  (1 child)

If you drink it, doesn't that make it Poison?

[–]meatywood 62 points63 points  (2 children)

This is unsettling

[–]44324 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m with you, no me gusta

[–]Swiftfox06 110 points111 points  (14 children)

Isn't this just slime?

[–]WilliamMButtlicker 8 points9 points  (10 children)

No, it’s a simulation. How are people looking at this and thinking it’s real??

[–]starsleeps 16 points17 points  (1 child)

idk about you dude but I learn about things I didn’t know exist pretty much every day on the internet, I just assumed this was another one of those

[–]BeneathWatchfulEyes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well then it's as simulation of slime, not a simulation of super-viscous liquid.

[–]Investigatingjournal 37 points38 points  (3 children)

Drink a gallon of it and make bets on what route it chooses.

[–]Chrissthom 36 points37 points  (1 child)

Right through the chest

[–]MalmerDK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello my baby...

[–]Njadmessi11YT 36 points37 points  (0 children)

No not oddly satisfying it’s anxiety become real. The liquid is pure anxiety. It falls out but goes back in again. This is anxiety incarnate

[–]rbesfe 49 points50 points  (18 children)

This is a post from 3 years ago, and is computer simulated. If anyone wants to see the discussion: https://www.reddit.com/r/physics/comments/890ssa

[–]I-am-a-meat-popcycle 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I was sure someone got a glass of what my mother used to serve us. Something which she called "gravy".

[–]DenormalHuman 5 points6 points  (1 child)

that thread offers no confirmation that it is a simulation

[–]thedirtyknapkin 2 points3 points  (3 children)

if it's stimulated it's done in a way to make it seem real very subtly. notice the sightly blinking light? that's from it being in slow motion under an ac light. ac, or alternating current, alternates at the frequency lower than most slow motion video frame rates so you see them blink like that. in fact, if you know what region of the world this is from you can math out the frame rate from the blinks alone.

anyway, point is, if this is stimulated they considered quite a lot that most wouldn't when trying to make it look not stimulated.

[–]rbesfe 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I personally think the hand and glass are real along with the flickering lights, but the liquid inside is not. I don't see any flickering in the reflections on the black goop.

[–]thedirtyknapkin 5 points6 points  (1 child)

ooh, that's certainly possible, though I will say that flicker effect gets less noticeable the brighter the light gets. not just from this example, that's just generally how it tends to go. for me the jury's still out on this one. I have no reason to doubt it, but I'm a camera guy, not a physics guy. I don't see any obvious editing trickery, but I'm very aware that good editing can't be seen. I'll leave this one back with the physics people.

[–]encreturquoise 16 points17 points  (1 child)

This is Nickelodeon Gak

[–]stugots10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Came to post this. Gak all the way.

[–]rsgm123 73 points74 points  (29 children)

That's neither viscous nor a fluid

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viscosity

[–]ropra7645 22 points23 points  (10 children)

It's not viscous, but why it's not a fluid?

[–]rsgm123 10 points11 points  (9 children)

Actually it could be a fluid. Someone mentioned it could be a high surface tension fluid from, which I'm not familiar with

[–]Cllzzrd 6 points7 points  (4 children)

It is a non-Newtonian fluid, specifically a pseudoplastic (shear thinning) fluid. Its viscosity changes with the amount of shear being applied. The more it is agitated the more it changes to being like water. Once it stops being agitated it sets up like molasses or honey.

This is the opposite to the corn starch and water that you might have played at home or in science class with that becomes more solid if you hit it but easily let’s your finger slide in when you poke it.

[–]MissBandersnatch2U 8 points9 points  (9 children)

The Holy Roman Empire was neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire

[–]939319 2 points3 points  (1 child)

A peanut is neither a pea, nor a nut.

[–]Kinners_Dinners 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BUT it was a thing... 🤔

[–]AtticusLynch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boston college is neither in Boston nor a college

[–]Cllzzrd 3 points4 points  (7 children)

Actually it is both viscous and a fluid.

It is a pseudoplastic fluid, which is a type of non-Newtonian fluid. It’s viscosity changes depending on how much shear force is being applied to the fluid.

In this case as it is agitated it becomes more water-like but not all the fluid is effected by the shear force so it pulls the sloshing fluid back into the cup as there is still more viscous fluid in the cup

[–]papapun-jabi 29 points30 points  (2 children)

Pinky out for the glass of demon semen. Classy.

[–]njl4515 5 points6 points  (1 child)

[–]NKO_five 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go home Venom. You’re drunk.

[–]tiredtechie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess you could say it's a Thick-quid

[–]StopMockingMe0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Prometheus spoilers.

[–]SimonGhostRiley93 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Don't let any of that get on you....sometimes, these things in Nature, when they bind, they can be hard to unbind.

[–]Snarky_Boojum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really seems to like you.

[–]MSL1014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Venom!

[–]aphaits 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Are jellos/gelatin solid or liquid matter?

[–]SillyOldJack 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Jello is a colloid.

[–]aphaits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s cool man. Now I know how to describe my flabby gut.

[–]NagaseIorichan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read it as vicious and was confused 🤦🏽‍♀️

[–]ninjapandaman94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Venom 2 confirmed

[–]felesroo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't drink that, Tasha Yar! No!

[–]big-blue-balls 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I propose somebody write a bot that automatically cross posts to /r/iamverysmart every time somebody uses the word viscous incorrectly.

[–]onenightblunder[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Educate me.

[–]onenightblunder[S] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

original link because I was not able to crosspost

[–]irkach 10 points11 points  (1 child)

[–]Iredditfromwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where does it show that’s it’s simulated? The mod says so, but I’m not convinced.

[–]GentleMood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

abooooooo

[–]mlodge87 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hey, it’s the creature that killed Tasha Yar! Big fan!

[–]BlackSecurity 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What is it?

[–]MagicalOrgazm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A computer simulation

[–]Wilson8151 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My confidence level waddling around w/ my drink after I've had too many

[–]Undertalebro69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This some black magic shit

[–]RelevantMetaUsername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a lolsquid

[–]vato76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

reminds me of school cafeteria chocolate milk

[–]shirtpants1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Evil Flubber.

[–]nu24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like a drink you’d buy at Omega Mart

[–]Aussie-of-Skellige 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice try. That’s the oil alien from X-files.

[–]not_a_putin_robot 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It looks like a spit that you make and see how far it can go before you suck it back up again….

You know you’ve done it before.

[–]CoasterHorizons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pretty sure that's the really liquidy slime

[–]fireisfuego 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its like the truck never hitting the post all over again

[–]939319 1 point2 points  (2 children)

But glass IS a super-viscous liquid.

[–]SaintSlowly 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I thought this was just a theory. So its fact?

[–]SpyderTekk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where’s the action lab to explain when u need him

[–]Hegemonee 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Is this the new venom trailer?

[–]Jack_of_Hearts20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, That Venom🕷 ya idiot

[–]CharlieKangaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Viscosity is the resistance to flow.

[–]AlexVX_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Encourage anyone who's interested in the science involved to look into the field of rheology.

Material science is truly fascinating

[–]MissRockNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hexxus from Ferngully

[–]Raven02101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought the title said "super villainous" and it didn't even phase me before i read it again

[–]C2-H5-OH 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Oh come on, this is just non newtonian fluid. Literally slime.

[–]onenightblunder[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

This one is a simulation.

[–]C2-H5-OH 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Doubt it, unless you can link me to the source. The light flickering during slomo footage is a giveaway that this was shot on a camera and not done in Blender

[–]ISourceBondage 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This is a simulation not real

[–]GreenRanger90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought this was r/Simulated

[–]Mijari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shoot 300 frost bolts at it until it freezes, then do enough dps to shatter it until it breaks into little pieces. Then you can hurt it

[–]DiscipleOfKeanu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They better be careful. I’ve seen this stuff swallow a starfleet officer whole.

[–]cosgyp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Newtini

[–]40_Burger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what people think Guinness is like who have seen it and never had it.

[–]onenightblunder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To everyone that has been saying this is a simulation:

I asked it on r/simulation and someone there told me that the way lights are flickering is not something they do in simulations. So this is real.

[–]AwwThisProgressLoves this community 0 points1 point  (1 child)

TIL what viscosity is

[–]SillyOldJack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Or rather what it's not.

[–]imma__Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aren't Glass super-viscous? They are called super cooled liquid, right?

[–]PokiP -4 points-3 points  (1 child)

CGI bullshit.

[–]TrickComedian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeehaw just like the moon landing, brother!

[–]theflyinggreg -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When you try to let your spit go as low as possible before sucking it back up

[–]jehad2005 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is the oppisite of satisfying. NiBBa juice be making me mad ngl

[–]onenightblunder[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I read someone asking for an Action Lab explanation.

I was not able to find this particular gif but this is the closest thing that seems relevant.
