This is so cool! How do they move so smooth?? You’ll never convince me they don’t have heelies on lol

[–]WaterHaven 2519 points2520 points  (158 children)

Pretty sure its sped up in certain areas, just based on the long curly hairs.

But lots of things are edited, and I still enjoyed watching it.

[–]Few_Cheesecake4142 1504 points1505 points  (137 children)

Yes, they shot the whole video at half speed and sped it back up. It is a very clever and simple way to achieve this effect.

[–]lemony_snicket 392 points393 points  (117 children)

Watch any Primus music video from the 90s for more on this.

Eg. Wyonas Big Brown Beaver

[–]kirkum2020 147 points148 points  (23 children)

Or nearly any music video today. Even the ones with lower impact moves do it because the final product is more synchronous.

[–]ConspicuousPineapple 124 points125 points  (16 children)

Also because often the star of the video can't dance as well as the others.

[–]Rben97 74 points75 points  (14 children)

Lady Gaga would like a word with you.

[–]JorusC 149 points150 points  (9 children)

Lady Gaga is an oasis in the talent desert.

[–]helloiamCLAY 83 points84 points  (4 children)

Lady Gaga is a hit of acid in a bottle of aspirin.

[–]cardboardunderwear 47 points48 points  (2 children)

Exactly. Lady Gaga is a one eyed giant in the valley of the blind. Except she has two eyes and she's regular size.

[–]E404_User_Not_Found 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Lady Gaga is a treasure.

[–]ButterNuttz 27 points28 points  (2 children)

Always enjoyed this music video https://youtu.be/Whv1tLqKZig

[–]RDmAwU 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is that one take? I need a behind the scenes here, I don't understand how they coordinated that

Edit: https://youtu.be/LFXYInU4Cuw impressive

[–]sessurea 3 points4 points  (2 children)

With a lot of practice it's possible to look very synchronized without shooting in slow motion, k-pop groups do it quite a lot. I'm not even a fan but Seventeen (male group) and Loona (female group) who both have 13 members are impressive at this.

[–]buellster92 15 points16 points  (4 children)

Or OK GO’s End Love for one that really fucks with recording in slomo

[–]RJFerret 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Don't know how I hadn't seen that one of theirs, for others' convenience: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2fpgpanZAw

[–]Anonynewt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That duck stole the show

[–]LordIlpalazo 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Just watched it. Now I'm in a OK Go rabbit hole. "I Won't Let You Down" is very impressive as well.

[–]stereoworld 18 points19 points  (2 children)

I think that was down to the suits they were wearing being wayyy too cumbersome to instrumentally keep up with the rhythm of the song.

Still, it really resulted a great effect.

[–]Motorsagmannen 4 points5 points  (1 child)

yeah the jerky motions really sell the animatronic vibe they were going for

[–]OldKnitwit 15 points16 points  (63 children)

Alrighty, what in the world did you just make me watch? That video is in my search history forEVER! When I'm dead and gone and my kids go snooping, they'll need therapy. Generations of my descendents will know me as "That weird woman we never talk about," and they'll use my name for frightening the little kids into behaving.

(Is it a real band? I was scared to look further into it.)

[–]Mrdongs21 38 points39 points  (6 children)

what's it like to be young

[–]xantxant 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Holy crap I absolutely bust out laughing at "IS PRIMUS A REAL BAND" I'm dead

[–]AstroAlmost 6 points7 points  (1 child)

primus sucks

[–]the_pinguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Primus sucks.

[–]OldKnitwit 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I can't remember! I'm 60 and the old memory's dropping out occasionally.

[–]guessesurjobforfood 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Username checks out

[–]lwhite1 30 points31 points  (8 children)

That band's bassist, Les Claypool, is regarded as one of the best (slap) bassists ever. He has incredible solos.

[–]badSparkybad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I listen to Les' bass parts I'm just...dumbfounded by how somebody can be so inventive. He's off the charts.

[–]rathat 3 points4 points  (3 children)

He has a psych rock band with Sean Lennon (John's son) called The Claypool Lennon Delirium and they are fucking amazing. Please listen.

[–]colsaldo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a picture of his awesome six string fretless bass on my wall for years. Legend.

[–]elizacarlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even the grouchy bass player in my band, who never compliments Anyone, says Les is an absurdly good musician.

[–]drpfenderson 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Amazingly real. As mentioned, band leader is one of the most influential bassists alive. The theme song for the television show South Park is by them.

[–]SpaceAgeNomad 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Primus!? Is it a real band?

See also: Primus sucks!

[–]Valdrax 17 points18 points  (24 children)

Primus very real, very weird, and very awesome. How many bands can you think of where the bass player is the singer and front man? Not enough, in my opinion. "Pork Soda" is one my favorite albums.

[–]trtzbass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh crap. Now I wanna go back and listen to Sailing The Seas Of Cheese, Pork Soda and Tales From The Punchbowl.

[–]hooligan99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beatles (could be argued), the police/sting, Rush, Motörhead, Pink Floyd at times, Blink 182 at times, All American Rejects, Kiss

[–]Philosophile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Crucial Taunt comes to mind. I hear they can wail.

[–]OldKnitwit 7 points8 points  (8 children)

Not many, to be fair. I just had a wander around the web to see if I could find any I knew, and under the "rock" genre they're all pretty much co-lead, or occasional lead. Interesting!

And I feel like Primus either has a very real and adoring fan base, or you're all winding up a gullible old woman (aka me).

[–]Ziurch 9 points10 points  (1 child)

They are being sincere. Primus had a strong following in the 90s (when I was into them). As far as I can tell, unlike many other products of the 90s (and since), Primus was committed to being outlandish, and their popularity/following was just an interesting side effect.

(I'm quoting from memory here; I'm sure someone will come along and correct it:) Les Claypool in an interview once said someone said to him that "Primus sucks!" His response was, "Ya know, we kind of do suck." It became a slogan and t-shirts were sold with it.

[–]OldKnitwit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, I'm persuaded. Honestly, I am! And now I get the "Primus sucks!" comments haha! I took them literally.

Soooo, I'll get a bevvy in a bit and have a listen. I get the feeling I'll need the bevvy. Thanks for the info. :)

[–]Valdrax 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here's the whole album "Pork Soda" on YouTube, if you're interested. (No video, just the bizarre album cover, if the video is what weirded you out most.) The lead song, "My Name is Mud" is about a redneck burying a body after killing someone for mocking his name and has a great, heavy slap-bass line. And then it gets just weirder and trippier from there.

[–]Bentish 2 points3 points  (3 children)

This comment thread has been wonderfully adorable. My mother would have been 60 this year, and I like to think she'd have been on Reddit like this, too. A little wide-eyed and incredulous about all the weird shit she didn't know existed. Thank you for that.

[–]OldKnitwit 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Aww what a lovely thing to say! Thank you! You're adorable too. I bet your mum loved you very much. And yes, there certainly IS some weird shit around, which is why I'm hooked on Reddit. My youngest regrets getting me into it because I'm always pointing out some of the more outrageous or interesting stuff, and I occasionally try to slip a 'Redditism' into the conversation.

F for my sons.

[–]chewtality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely real. Although they're weird as hell they're incredibly influential.

My dad likes them and he's 68! I saw them in concert with him probably 10 years back.

[–]dumb_ants 5 points6 points  (7 children)

The Police come to mind, but no others.

[–]hooligan99 10 points11 points  (6 children)

Rush is another huge one. Motörhead too.

Kiss, Beatles, and Blink 182 have bassists who are co-lead singers.

[–]lucid808 3 points4 points  (1 child)

The Cars, Pink Floyd, Cream, NOFX, ZZ Top

[–]badSparkybad 2 points3 points  (1 child)

There was this one guy...what's his name?

Oh yeah, Paul McCartney.

[–]solitarybikegallery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thin Lizzy as well.

[–]seatownquilt-N-plant 7 points8 points  (3 children)

You just watched one of the greatest bass players of all time. Les Clay Pool, he often plays a fretless bass, those vertical lines on a guitar that tell you where the notes are.

He had two bands, Primus and Les Clay Pool and the Frog Brigade.

[–]FuckJonHamm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't forget The Claypool Lennon Delirium, with Sean Lennon (John Lennon's son). It's some of his best work.

[–]FuckJonHamm 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Oh you're in for a treat now. I wish I could rediscover Primus again for the first time. Listen to Frizzle Fry front to back, easily one of my favorite records ever made. Everything they do is so interesting.

[–]OldKnitwit 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Oh dear god. Looking at the replies, I'm so tempted to give it a go. So, so tempted.

However, I might recommend Primus to one of my sons, in a, "Wow I heard about this amazing band! Let me know what you think!" kind of way. I'm such a coward.

[–]PssstHeyBuddy 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Do it. They're amazing. I fucking love Primus.

[–]OldKnitwit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will. I'm persuaded. Oh god.

[–]PssstHeyBuddy 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Ohh please go and listen to more Primus.

[–]OldKnitwit 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Haha I've been persuaded, finally. Everyone sincerely seems to think they're the dog's bollocks, so I think I better had.

[–]PssstHeyBuddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I've traveled from Ireland to the States twice see to them live, so I definitely thing they are the dogs bollocks.

[–]xantxant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This took me down a youtube/wikipedia rabbit hole in speedrun time.

  • watch the video, which is amazing
  • notice the bass drum, which says "Buck Naked and the Bare Bottom Boys"
  • look it up, turns out that was a real band, the lead singer really did go mostly naked to shows, and they were friends with Primus
  • the lead singer Philip Bury was shot to death, apparently for walking a dog near pigeons in Golden Gate Park

[–]kawss1013 90 points91 points  (4 children)

Still amazing either way because they are so synchronous they entire time. It’s insane to think how long that takes to perfect.

[–]mindsnare 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a basic setting in tiktok. But yeah works well.

[–]stoned_kitty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nice. It’s like how Primus shot the video for Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver.

[–]d1444 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How do you record something at half speed. What does that even mean?

[–]nixame 92 points93 points  (1 child)

And even if it is edited, it doesn't mean it isn't impressive. It still requires skill and it's very nicely choreographed

[–]IASWABTBJ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yes, just not equally as impressive

[–]DamnZodiak 28 points29 points  (11 children)

I mean, maybe this one is but it's not entirely unreasonable to assume it isn't edited. People do move like that (good shit starts at 2:17)
Or like this.
Or like in this one which ya'll have probably watched at some point.

[–]SirRealist 24 points25 points  (2 children)

Yeah I like how one setting on TikTok somehow discredits popping and locking for decades

[–]DamnZodiak 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Admittedly, it does seem kinda magical when you encounter it for the first time, but I hate that people are entirely unwilling to do some basic research or even just entertain the idea of people being able to dance like this.

[–]ThePeskyWabbit 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Ah good ol whzgud. Dude can dance

[–]Fa--913 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Can you elaborate when you say based on long curly guy hair? Like it doesn't move?

[–]axel198 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what he means is when you look at him and the way his hair bounces, it looks a little faster than expected.

It does look a tad sped up to me, but tbh it's a lot harder to dance slow at a pace that syncs when you speed it up than it is to just dance at that speed.

[–]Famineist 47 points48 points  (3 children)

its a dance style called "popping" I belive

[–]DamnZodiak 54 points55 points  (1 child)

It's probably the toughest style of dance I've tried to learn so far, because I had to actually build up some muscles I've never used before in order for my hits to look nice and clean. That and the coordination required is pretty hard.

[–]AstroAlmost 9 points10 points  (0 children)

my old band had a music video where the son of the inventor of the pop and lock dance performed, during the shoot even he got exhausted to the point that he puked haha.

[–]williamtbash 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's shot at half the speed and sped up.

[–]Tree272 12 points13 points  (5 children)

The curly hair dude is on IG as J4kson or something like that

[–]phlegm_de_la_phlegm 21 points22 points  (3 children)

Oh yeah, Jay Forkson

[–]PracticallyIndian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, he got his big break in the the movie FANTFOURSTIC.

[–]rum_ham19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fay Jorkson

[–]random-engineer 695 points696 points  (5 children)

Looks like we are approaching the Uncanny Valley from the other side.....

[–]1ovewaters 168 points169 points  (1 child)

that's the best explanation of this feeling i've seen yet

[–]Ncsu_Wolfpack86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, i fucking hate it.

[–]roof-banana 10 points11 points  (0 children)

THANK YOU for describing it so well. For years I thought I was the only one feeling uncomfortable watching videos like this. They put so much effort into it and it's awesome, but I can't watch it without feeling weird

[–]ErikOnFire 116 points117 points  (2 children)

The new Reddit meta: Cropping out the ticktok logo so nobody knows you watch ticktok and don't get roasted in the comments.

[–]helloitsname 24 points25 points  (1 child)

And then make fun of tiktok in the comments

[–]Ernest_Ocean[🍰] 534 points535 points  (38 children)

It’s because they recorded it in slow mo and sped it up in post.

[–]JurysOut 279 points280 points  (8 children)

Fellas, this man just exlpliced the "inexplicable"

[–]zyklon 151 points152 points  (1 child)

Fellas, this man just exlpliced the "inexplicable"

I think the word you're looking for here is exlplolclicpled

[–]maxshortrod 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bless you

[–]iAmUnintelligible 23 points24 points  (0 children)

He exlpliced it so hard

[–]Shermutt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

[–]Ansoni 9 points10 points  (8 children)

I think it might also vary in speed. Like they slowed down some bits more than others, practiced that, and then sped it all up to the same speed

[–]YouBetterChill 12 points13 points  (6 children)

I’m an idiot and don’t understand. Are they physically moving slow and then sped up on edit or are they physically moving normal and then then does up.

[–]ABCwarriorz 29 points30 points  (3 children)

They are moving slowly to make it easier to synch up.

[–]IJustLoveWinning 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can tell by his sweater's drawstrings.

[–]AldoWaldo2003 69 points70 points  (5 children)

RIP pop smoke

[–]SweetJazz25 24 points25 points  (2 children)

This song gives me shivers now. His whole posthumous album gives me shivers. It's so amazing but I feel so sad about him not enjoying is peak fame :(

[–]Crackracket 628 points629 points  (91 children)

I hate this and I can't explain why

[–]Hoogle5 445 points446 points  (30 children)

It’s because it’s sped up and you’re only subconsciously noticing it.

[–]Lemondish 85 points86 points  (22 children)

Oddly enough I'm more impressed with the synchronicity, then

Edit: Apparently I'm wrong

[–]CarrowFlinn 64 points65 points  (3 children)

Just semantics but the word you're looking for is synchrony. Synchronicity is a much cooler phenomenon.

[–]MikePaulCarr 27 points28 points  (1 child)

Semantics are cool I just learned something new

[–]RayquazaTheStoner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for teaching me about synchronicity

[–]OnionSprinkles 85 points86 points  (16 children)

It's way easier to appear synchronized while moving very slowly during recording and then speed it up 400%.

Any difference in transition timings is pretty much wiped away.

[–]miscmouse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like uncanny valley?

[–]spikeyfreak 8 points9 points  (3 children)

That makes the lip syncing more interesting.

[–]rincon213 101 points102 points  (31 children)

Is it the face that guy is making the whole time?

[–]BinJuiceBarry 142 points143 points  (27 children)

The creepy fuckboy face that looks like he's going to send your underage sister dirty DMs?

[–]rincon213 76 points77 points  (25 children)

I can’t stand that sleepy / horny stare guys are doing on TikTok. When I first saw it I thought it was a joke.

They look like a chick in a perfume commercial. You can tell the practice it.

[–]The_crew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

never change reddit

[–]iam_the-walrus 44 points45 points  (10 children)

Because pop smoke ain’t with us anymore 😔

[–]GabortionFund 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Rip the big woo😔

[–]617to413 5 points6 points  (0 children)

sighs and hits the leg

[–]DwightShnoute 5 points6 points  (0 children)

because it’s like a 2000s doritos commercial and everybody likes it all the sudden

[–]Ignativs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm happy to read someone else hates it. I think it's horribly cringy, but I was scared of saying it and offending everyone.

[–]MysticMistakeCake 93 points94 points  (1 child)

I like to think they come from the same factory that boy bands are made in.

[–]Quote__Unquote 80 points81 points  (22 children)

Great song off a great album, RIP Smoke

[–]BigBoiPoiSoi 33 points34 points  (1 child)

Idk about you but Dior makes me go apeshit

[–]Quantization 17 points18 points  (5 children)

What's the song?

[–]BigBoiPoiSoi 32 points33 points  (4 children)

Dior, by Pop Smoke, drives me nuts when I hear it (in a good way)

[–]Gallochi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been randomly singing the chorus for weeks now lmao

Mike Amiri, Mike Amiri Bille Jean, Billie Jean Christian Dior, Dior

[–]Kikuyu_Lad 3 points4 points  (1 child)

It's a UK drill beat. 808s on them always go mad lol.

[–]Corporal_Rodney 85 points86 points  (13 children)

[–]Richmard 36 points37 points  (11 children)

Yeah I don’t think OP knows what that word means.

[–]Iwouldlikesomecoffee 50 points51 points  (5 children)

I take it as, “yes, they’re synchronized and that’s satisfying; however there’s something more here and I can’t quite put my finger on it.”

I think that “something more” is the parts where the video is sped up.

[–]Richmard 16 points17 points  (2 children)

And just like that it’s been explained 🤯

[–]Im_Tiny_Rick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Inexplicably explained!

[–]blah525225 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I also think OP might not understand the odd in r/oddlysatisfying because dancing is intended to be satisfying to watch

[–]Richmard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely lol

Like, ‘wow these guys have clearly practiced and are exhibiting their skills. How odd that it’s nice to watch.’

[–]quicxly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

literally nonplussed.

[–]ORANGEBEANIEBRO 21 points22 points  (1 child)

Troy and Abed with the dance mooooves!

[–]MrNickNifty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

JD and Turk

[–]BANTER_WITH_THE_LADS 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s edited, look at curly guys hair

[–]AKA_Squanchy 8 points9 points  (7 children)

What’s Kaido? (カイドウ)

[–]Enitoni 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was so confused the katakana made no sense but now I'm realizing it's just reversed and I'm an idiot

[–]Royal_Flame 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One Piece Character

[–]ShirleySeriousBlack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's king of the beasts in the new world

[–]Ansoni 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even looking at a dictionary I can't find anything cool enough to put upon a t-shirt so it's probably just the character from One Piece

[–]ThickPrick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s an American diet.

[–]EmpiricalPancake 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Mad respect.

[–]--NiNjA-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To each his own, I guess.

[–]acomaslip 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seems like everyone is on this trend at the moment.

[–]Sanctimonius 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Huh. I've been wondering what Guendouzi has been doing in Berlin.

[–]WengerIHardlyKnowHer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t he test positive? He should back of his friend a little here lol

[–]digitulgurl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is this from tiktok? Who are these guys? I totally want to follow them immediately!

[–]Goodyardfam 3 points4 points  (1 child)

its like autotune but for movement

[–]lildicknugs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This makes me uncomfy

[–]yellowpurplezebra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you enjoyed watching this check out the band steam powered giraffe

[–]Treee_eee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s their tiktok username tho?

[–]LordCaptainCuba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s like the dancing version of “auto tune” those little warble moves are basically an editor scrubbing a timeline. 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–]Gnomiez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just keep watching bc guy in the back is hot... and I’m probably a perv now as I am nearing thirty....

[–]Sixty4Nine20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this a stand?

[–]Elenamcturtlecow96 26 points27 points  (2 children)

Aw, they're having so much fun :)

[–]derno 18 points19 points  (26 children)

I hate that these are sped up, meaning they do the dance slow. Takes away the level of skill for me

[–]frufruityloops 7 points8 points  (7 children)

Curly hair man dances a ton. He freestyles, choreographs, runs workshops, and kicks it with friends. He’s definitely still a very talented dancer. Having seen his progression, edited videos like this are more like when already-gorgeous girls use Snapchat filters... they’re just being extra. Still very skilled. He’s hard to keep up with regardless of editing.

[–]EddieUniverse 16 points17 points  (17 children)

Sped up or not, being that in sync and precise with their moves is still impressive. They’re moving perfectly, not just in time, but relative to each other.

[–]BinJuiceBarry 27 points28 points  (11 children)

I'm pretty sure that's been a thing since forever. They call it choreography.

[–]OnionSprinkles 14 points15 points  (1 child)

It's way easier to appear synchronized when moving slow motion for the recording and then speeding it up 400%.

The timing differences on transitions are pretty much wiped away when sped up.

[–]brumtownbully 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They killed this

[–]chocolatechiptrump 28 points29 points  (19 children)

This is the kind of dancing stuff that needs to be on tiktok. Not several thousand version of lame couples doing a dance where they touch their shoulders. This right here is satisfying to look at.

[–]Chacha2002 27 points28 points  (1 child)

This is all over tiktok though. On the contrary I don’t think I’ve ever seen a lame couple touch shoulders

[–]Aalim89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't surprise me if this one's from tiktok as well. I've noticed a lot of tiktoks on reddit get cropped so you don't see the logo or the end of the video. Like checking /r/tiktokcringe and then seeing the cropped version on other subs. I'm guessing people want to avoid tiktok bad drama and cropping gives the maximum karma, but it's kinda sucky for the creators when their username is removed.

[–]GalacticEmu 19 points20 points  (1 child)

It is. Do you have TikTok? The algorithm’s caters to what you like. I specifically strongly dislike dancing videos and POVS as they’re just kinda annoying. Regardless, I don’t see that shit. Like, ever. So, if you just wanted to see just this kinda stuff, you probably eventually would (though it’s a good idea to use like Not Interested on shit you don’t like).

If you do have tiktok and you’re still seeing dance videos and shit...well, in a way that’s your fault; it’s catered to what you enjoy, and it’s terrifyingly good at that.

[–]Jirkang 8 points9 points  (7 children)

Am i the only one who hates Tiktok so so much?

[–]-E-T- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Soooo.. any boyband since the 90's bas been doing this??

[–]Rabano11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the cool content on reddit is from TikTok nowadays.

[–]kobe_101_rings 1 point2 points  (0 children)
