I'd agree they are very important to the band's modern live shows, but The National is Matt, Aaron, Bryce, Scott, and Bryan. Always has been, always will be. That and they would be just fine if they didn't have Ben and Kyle, they are in no way essential members. IMHO

I think once you are in the role of touring member you tend to stay in that role. I mean Padma was just as important to the band's earlier albums and live shows but he was never made an official member... I'd argue Padma deserved it more to be honest.
