80 year old parents with $60K in credit card debt. Both are having health issues now too. Use debt settlement companies or deal with it myself? by Mission_Buyer_9893 in personalfinance

[–]trace_jax3 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Totally agree here. Consult an attorney.

One other note: OP, you mention that your father has no issue nuking his credit. Running out on $60k of credit card debt isn't as simple as "well, my credit will take a hit, and collections will hound me, but w/e." Your parents could get sued. The credit card companies may be able to seize assets or garnish some income. One way or another, this has to be dealt with directly.

And an attorney who knows their situation will be in the best position to do that.

[Cappacio] This is interesting and important. The 3rd QB only used for injury must come from a team’s active 53 man roster. It cannot be a practice squad elevation. That means a team would actually have to carry three quarterbacks to do this. Makes roster decisions even more interesting. by Son_Of_The_Empire in nfl

Interesting question. QB2 probably has some incentive to raise a fuss about it if he believes he can continue playing. Backups have contractual incentives at stake, even if they're not playing especially well. It's ultimately up to the team's medical staff, and the medical staff work for the organization (on non-concussion matters).

Good question. Here is the text of the new bylaw:

One hour and 30 minutes prior to kickoff, each club is required to establish its Active List for the game by notifying the Referee of the players on its Inactive List for that game. Each club may also designate one emergency third quarterback from its 53-player Active/Inactive List (i.e., elevated players are not eligible for designation) who will be eligible to be activated during the game, if the club's first two quarterbacks on its game day Active List are not able to participate in the game due to injury or disqualification (activation cannot be a result of a head coach's in-game decision to remove a player from the game due to performance or conduct). If either of the injured quarterbacks is cleared by the medical staff to return to play, the emergency third quarterback must be removed from the game and is not permitted to continue to play quarterback or any other position, but is eligible to return to the game to play quarterback if another emergency third quarterback situation arises.

A club is not eligible to use these procedures if it carries three quarterbacks on its game day Active List [47- or 48-players in 2023].

(emphasis added)

I read this to say that QB3 can play if, and only if, QB1 and QB2 are hurt or disqualified, but that the moment one of those conditions is not met, QB3 must come out of the game. For example, during last year's AFC Divisional Round game between the Jags and Chiefs, Mahomes was out due to injury for the last drive or two of the first half. If Henne had also been injured, then QB3 could have played. Mahomes was able to continue at the start of the second half, so at that point, Mahomes would have to go in, and QB3 would come out.

Interestingly, the rule doesn't provide any express discretion to the coach (e.g., if QB3 is playing better than pre-injury QB2). But the team's medical staff is not independent on non-concussion matters. It'll be interesting to see if any coaches abuse this by pressuring the medical staff not to clear a player.

It's probably better to think of it as 48+1 than 49. The +1 doesn't play by the same rules as the other 48. The other 48 can be put in or taken out of the game at the coach's discretion. The third QB can only be put in if QB1 and QB2 are out of the game due to injury.

Just curious, during covid, why did/didn’t you take the jab as an INTP? by Ronk3li in INTP

[–]trace_jax3 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Public institutions let us down when COVID became presented as a binary: either you live (which many did) or you die. This neglected (1) medium- to long-term complications, such as long COVID, and (2) unknown downstream effects from a novel virus.

For me, the fact that COVID is still killing a 9/11's worth of Americans every week is enough for me to continue masking and be up to date on vaccines.

Now leaving Florida by Lilyfart2014 in florida

I was a Florida boy all my life. I moved up to Chicago for grad school, bringing only jeans and a light jacket (that's how you dress for the cold, right?).

One day, two years in, I saw it was going to be 3°F the next day. I thought "ooh, finally, it's warming up."

That's when I realized I needed to move home.

Election 2023: Donna Deegan becomes Jacksonville’s first female mayor by heresmytwopence in florida

I still don't understand how Rutherford is a player in Jacksonville politics. I follow local, state, and national politics pretty closely. The only things I know about Rutherford are (1) he was sheriff when Jacksonville was the murder capital of the state, and (2) he voted to overturn the election. What does he even do?

Oh weird. The reddit preview is showing question 3.

We have f(x) = -x3 + bx2 + cx - 3. We know that f(1) = -1 + b + c - 3 = 4. We also know that f''(x) = -6x + 2bx, and f''(1/2) = -3 + b = 1. Can you get to b and c from there?
