Would that be Nightdive's fault? Whatever studio did the work would be at the whims of the IP holder - being Microsoft for Quake and Tencent for System Shock. They would never release an open source version of a lot of these games so this is the middle ground that allows younger generations to explore them.

This game runs on UE4. The point is to remake it with modern features and effects. You can't keep tweaking old engines from 30 years ago.

Nightdive specifically re-released the older game along with the first Enhanced Edition like you want. https://store.steampowered.com/app/410710/System_Shock_Enhanced_Edition/

Usually this stuff isn't connected. Layoff decisions are made weeks or months in advance. Takes time for PPMDs to get to all of the calls.

... The remake kept a lot of the originals awkwardness, that's almost the point. Dishonored and Deathloop specifically focus on motion and being streamlined versions of that.
