This is not the future we wanted by pasjojo in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]dorkability 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in the near future, most likely. People rarely understand that robotics aren’t not at the same place as humans in terms of dexterity, flexibility, and ability to follow instructions from another human.

So a robot completely replacing a grocery clerk? Probably not. But improved infrastructure (i.e. a machine that can forklift more stuff) can help reduce the amount of grocery clerks hired.

You have to try A Sorcery of Thorns. I’d say it’s more magical academia but it fits the whimsical fairy tale vibe.

Yeah, why is every other male lead in a YA novel a prince?

It takes 5 years because we alternate between internship and academic semesters. And Waterloo has a job board that hires from Waterloo students. It’s super helpful for the first few internships.

Recs like Howl's Moving Castle and Enchantment of Ravens by kellyfish11 in YAlit

A Winter’s Promise gave me Howl Moving Castle vibes. I can definitely see it as a Ghibli movie.

So, The Twilight Series is getting a TV reboot by Xftg123 in YAlit

I disagree. I feel like the vast majority of recent movies based on YA books were chosen because they had a diverse cast. Especially Netflix.

Yona of the Dawn, Chihayafuru, and Banana Fish would be my first-picks of each genre/demographic, respectively.

Darn, I have so many good manga/manhwa recs.

For books, I can only think of contemporary recommendations. You have to check out Stolen by Lucy Christopher. It has a bit of stockholm syndrome by the way.

You’ve probably already read Six of Crows, but Kaz will brutally kill anyone who lays hands on Inej.

You should read “I’m Dating a Psychopath”. It’s still early to see any yandere but both of them are definitely not normal. Art is also phenomenal.

There's been a debate about needing more Young Adult books stories for young boys given they don't really have many options post middle grade, and outside of manga and superhero comics, I think that's a good idea. The question is, what stories would be solid for the next generation? by throwawaytempest25 in YAlit

[–]dorkability 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree that casual learned misogyny contributes to boys not watching female-led stories, it’s not just contained to books.

However, having read lots of Young Adult, the romance written is almost always with the female gaze. Dudes like Rhysand, Jacks, and otherworldly hot men are unrelatable and unrealistic role models to the average boy.

But honestly, sometimes I just want something unabashedly female-gaze haha.

I think you would like Lukas from the Black Witch. He’s not exactly on the good side, but is not evil in the traditional sense either.

From the wikia,

“Lukas is powerful, unpredictable, seductive, and can be arrogant and aggressive. He knows he is a powerful Mage and he knows how attractive he is. He is charismatic and charming when it gets him what he wants. Lukas is casually cynical. He has a penchant for humor at fraught times.”

Unfortunately, he is one of the dudes in a love triangle I’m not for sure who’s winning (haven’t caught up).

People are a lot more willing to get into passionate arguments about stupid stuff for fun. This is the same as bone vs bone-in or crust vs no-crust. It’s entertaining to debate while no feelings gets hurt. Don’t take this argument so seriously lol

I actually don’t mind OpenAI retracting it’s open source policy, not because of what other companies will do with the technology, but what countries and nations will do with it.

Do you know where I could find implementations of these? Or which algorithms does so. I’ve been using the imitation github repo but there was no indication in the docs that a value function is learned in any of the algorithms.
