Thank you and yes, she's truly amazing! I got my first tattoo with her and I had intended it to be a one-time thing since it was in memory of a loved one. All the winter comments are fair and valid, but I'd like to highlight that it's totally manageable. I live nearby and although not a law student, hang out quite a lot at the law school lobby—including early mornings, for proximity reasons. It does get slushy and disgusting for a while in the winter but if you don't mind putting on your headphones and going for a walk, you'll be fine. My very biased opinion is that it's not worth the trouble of buying a car just for the commute. Good luck!!

Have a bunch of printed resumes with contact information. Before asking for the manager, talk to the store front or whoever seems to be in charge that day. Even if they're not hiring at the moment, you can leave your resume and hope for the best. I know people who've landed jobs like this. It isn't odd at all. Good luck :)
