What is the worst city in Japan? by 1MillionSpacebucks in japanlife

Anyone else notice a big increase in these "give me free content for clickbait articles" type of questions since the borders fully opened? They're in every Japan-related group I'm part of.

Maybe if you took a picture of that table and inserted into an Excel spreadsheet they might read it? hehehe

Job hunting. Instead of clarifying things, interviewers assume things, which is especially great when we're communicating in English and they barely speak it - I don't think it'd be any different in Japanese anyway.

Then there's the control freak that, instead of picking up the phone when I call or accepting my suggestion that we schedule an interview already, has to "confirm" everything about my cv and ask a million out-of-context questions over email. JFC.

handling fellow foreign employees have been a bit hard lately by Any-Wonder1867 in japanlife

Many Americans want to come to Japan because of anime or for a better quality of life, though, so I think it's possible. Let's see if OP can share that info.

Seems others have given you advice, so just to understand the situation, are they American? Younger Americans (but not only) are increasingly less resourceful and more helpless, and it's getting worse and worse. Among many issues that are driving teachers out of the profession is just how much time they have to spend babysitting kids no matter what age - they're dealing with high school kids who don't know how to tie shoe laces. College professors have similar complaints.

My Japanese colleagues do not talk to me by jgnhockey26 in japanlife

[–]Elegant_Middle2524 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do speak Japanese fluently but at a basic level

You're not fluent. A person either is or isn't fluent and you are not fluent. It's energy and time consuming to speak to a beginner like yourself, so be realistic about your abilities and work on actually becoming fluent outside of work. If you keep pushing your colleagues to be your language partners, they will resent you even more.

I once worked with someone who overestimated their language abilities and my heart sank every time I had to deal with her. I already had my own work to do, I really did not have the time or energy to babysit anyone else.

Thank you. I mean, that's exactly what I'm talking about.

Those pushing for Japan to change to western ways really are clueless to just how completely racist they are. It's one thing to disagree or dislike aspects of a culture, and I certainly have my issues with Japanese culture, but it's a whoooole other story to say the Japanese are lesser than for having their own culture, which, by the way, allows us all, foreign and Japanese, to not worry about getting shot or stabbed etc.

The thing about the western madness is that it's not even a matter of opinion. We can see the results of the western mentality every day right here on reddit, even. The burned cities, poop on the street etc. that you mention are on video for all to see. It's not possible for sane people to take those who defend such behavior seriously. Westerners are destroying their own countries and seem angry that the Japanese aren't doing the same. It's insane.

I wonder if Japan would just close the border again if too many stupid people tried to rock the boat here 🤔.

I wish that would happen, at least that would keep out stupid youtubers.

What do you think is a decent amount of notice to give a private JHS/HS before quitting by sbring in teachinginjapan

[–]Elegant_Middle2524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the position is in or near Tokyo, I'd be happy to be a possible backup replacement, so you don't feel bad leaving. As for worrying about leaving your employer hanging, though, mine let me go because I got sick, so think about that.

That I have the right to disagree with and complain about whatever thing regarding Japan and I know I have many problems living here, but that every day I remember how grateful I am for being able to live in a safe society. I hope Japan won't let western ways ruin what they have.

Thank you for sharing this! I'm glad that this issue is taken seriously. I've had a few people suggest I lie on my CV about past employers, and I'm sorry to say, none of them are very smart to begin with. Not that I'd ever lie, but none of them seem to understand there are repercussions for such acts.

Anyone else living in Japan just glad that they got out of the western media sphere? by [deleted] in japanlife

LOL If the West is so great, there are multiple flights out of Japan every day. Sayonara!

Won't you need certain documents from your current employer like social insurance information?

In any case, if you're upfront about the reasons you're quitting, a half decent potential employer will understand, but if you lie and they find out, that will tarnish your reputation with the new employer.

I know exactly what you mean, although I try to follow the news here a little just to stay in the loop and there's heavy western propaganda going on. The Japan Times, for example is a debacle, trying to push western shit onto to Japan. Also, there's a lot of this shit going on in education, which makes me want to puke.

I find that interpreting services in Japan are generally really crappy, even the supposed professional ones I've paid for. Only rarely are the workers real interpreters, but beats not having anyone to help at all.

If you read what I wrote, I said "what I hear" and I've heard it from many expats who have actually lived or still live there. I, for one, have had frightening experiences with Japanese doctors and in Japanese hospitals, and many others have, too.

Btw, there are free over-the-phone interpreting services. If you want the numbers let me know and I'll look them up for you.

I cannot begin to tell you about my own horror stories. "Doctors" here are complete idiots, with only a few exceptions.

A few people have told me Keio has a good university hospital, but I never went there myself. If you can afford it, from what I hear you're better off going to Thailand for some real doctors.
