Simple wire clamping tool for hoses (no welding) by 4rchibald in DIY

[–]4rchibald[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate that but I can't take much of the credit. Tool itself is not new and I just attempted to make it from what I had already laying around using basic equipment I have. Just wanted to share it after I found out it can be made that easily cause it seems quite useful and I will surely think about incorporating wires into my projects more often from now on

TG added mail today, there's... A little too much of it at present... by LawlessCoffeh in SS13

Did the somehow fixed how disposal sorting works?

It used to be that if you had multiple parcels traveling in the same pipe segment they would all be rerouted the moment they reach a sorting junction that matches the address of any of the parcels

What that means is, if you've sent few parcels at once, each to different head office, they would all be ejected in office of first head on their way

Are those old Boley screwdrivers? by 4rchibald in WatchHorology

[–]4rchibald[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently I have a cheap set from aliexpress. While the main body is good enough for me, metal used for tips is terrible (On the bright side because of that I learned how to dress screwdrivers so I guess it worked out), I was thinking about swapping them for Beco tips (so I'm glad to see them being recommended) but that 'boley' set was posted for cheaper than getting full set of tips so it was worth checking out. But since I can't really find any photo of that exact Boley set I think I'll pass on it

Out of curiosity, do photos from my original post work for you? They seemed fine to me until I edited the post to add photos of other sets to compare, then original images became gray with 'processing image...' annotation. Trying to figure out if its issue on my side or editing somehow messed the pictures

You're most likely right, although I had a bit of hope after I found pictures of supposed Boley screwdrivers in similar style (added pics to the original post)

Gravity Generator APC issues by Dirty_Rider in SS13

[–]4rchibald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's how it suppose to be. Grav generator, tcomms and AI sat start with their own SMES and are not connected to stations grid. Why? So the moment someone plants power sink people won't lose radio communication, gravity and AI.

Tcomms SMES on Box is charged to last for about 2h 30 min, grav generator will for sure last 5h without charging. No idea about AI Sat but AI will surely warn you when it will require charging.

Its not only Box thing, you'll see similar design on many others maps. But its worth actually pointing out that Box wiring is a story on its own with uncommon design of putting most APCs in maints and doing the same with wiring, with no wires going under hallway tiles and relaying mostly on single wire to deliver power (resulting in cutting half of station from power every time mouse eats a cable). Its all part of design philosophy which I understand and even approve of..thing is that Box is a low pop station on which engineering department is usually understaffed and simply doesn't have resources to constantly monitor maints. I addressed this in my simple guide for engineers. Adding few wires in specific places helps a lot with maintaining power delivery

How to remove incorrect spring bar? by 4rchibald in WatchHorology

[–]4rchibald[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Managed to finally cut spring bars with jewellers saw. It worked with my thinnest blade and was quite tricky since there was almost no wiggle room and I had to first put the blade between spring bar and case to get a place to start sawing since it was too tight from outside

[–]4rchibald[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, these spring bars

Thanks for finding that thread, I tried messing with spring bar tool, knife or even sacrifical screwdriver but couldn't get them to bite the bar enough to compress it but I like the idea of floss. So simple, even if it won't grip that well I even fell good about adding some glueing compound.

I'll try jeweller saw with thinnest blade suggested by other person in this thread (duh! Somehow I keep forgetting about this saw all the time) if it won't work I'll try the floss

Sadly I have metal bracelet on it, not just a bare spring bar so I can't do it, otherwise would have snip it or even would feel more confident about breaking it out if I could pry on it in the middle

[–]4rchibald[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was literally my first thought after I noticed I can't compress it with spring bar tool or even screwdriver but don't have drill press (actually have one, bought an old watchmakers drill press few months back, but its terrible and drills keep wandering all around the place, thats not a precise job but I still think it would only mess up bracelet and case more than they are already. I will keep it in the back of my head but that's something I will try only if there's no other option

Yeah, was trying to take some pictures before posting and after it, sadly I'm taking them with potato so couldn't get any close ones no matter the lighting, angle or background. That's the best I got, anything closer was too blurry but it should be enough to illustrate the situation

There's not much side play, right sound on the picture has a little bit (but it seems to have more space on side than it has in reality, was messing with it a little bit and I don't think I can do much). Jewellery saw is a good call, I'm using it so rarely that I didn't even think about it but I think it can still be tricky. I can hope the thinnest blade I have will work because I honestly don't think I can get any thinner, at least in my country. I'm especially worried about other side (left on picture), it is much more tighter

Botanists of SS13, what are some of your favorite plant creations? by Hime_Arikawa in SS13

[–]4rchibald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How hard it is to get a kudzu with specific traits I need?

I have zero experience with botany and as primarily engineer had this idea to put plasma and oxygen eating kudzu in SM chamber as additional gas filtering system. I'm just curious how hard it is to get these plants and how long would that take for an experienced botanist

Water Cooled SM-Failure by 4rchibald in SS13

[–]4rchibald[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's exciting! Can't wait for this to be implemented!

Now I just hope someone will do something like that for tesla and singularity so they would either be affected by different gasses or they could be used to create some gases, to revive these engines and give them purpose other than just showing up that you can set it up. I enjoy messing with SM and I would love to have as many possibilities to tune up other engines

I actually read someone warning about N2O set up few days ago for the reason you stated but didn't get much out of it. Is it recent change? At what temperature is N2O decaying? Does it still offer increased heat resistance to crystal? I must say, I am still often running it on N2O and haven't had any problems so far (but I'm often playing on bee so it may be not up to date)

When I said 'that's pretty much it' I of course meant my accomplishments up to this day, not that that's pretty much all you can do. And its pretty challenging to come up with new ideas, partially to as I said game limitations (but I guess SM and Atmos is still the most developed part of a game so I shouldn't be complaining about options, especially since as you said we can expect some upgrades in this field soon) and partially because people are simply not sharing them. As I said in original post when I was making my first steps and researching anything even remotely related to SM I didn't find many out of the box solutions. Just your list got me excited and pushed my to think while I was reading it and I'm sure I will refer to it in future when I'll be thinking about some new SM solution. For that reason I'm posting my things, not because I believe that they are truly amazing, game changing or for the fact very original, I bet multiple people did all these things, but they simply didn't share, they kept it to themselves and other players didn't get to learn or get inspiration from that. I hope that these posts I'm making will inspire someone, maybe now or maybe in years to come (cause I was personally reading few years old posts looking for anything odd and cool), to come up with their own solutions

Can you elaborate a little more on overclocking volume pumps? What do you mean by that?

The only thing that that list that I probably won't do is setup that runs without emitters. Stopping crystal from getting excited is the very first step of fighting any kind of delamination and I don't feel like its wise to lose that ability. But as you can change by my love to cooling loops and heat exchangers I'm kinda obsessed with eliminating all the other things that need electricity and can be turned off. Cooling the gases with cooling loop is pretty straight forward but eliminating vents, scrubbers and filters seem pretty challenging and the only idea I have to deal with it is using oxygen and plasma eating kudzu. I guess they are not the most efficient at that and it probably won't work but I first need to force myself into learning botany

[–]4rchibald[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I'm not that experienced, don't do many fancy experiments with gases, I'm pretty much only messing with SM and even there its more like making unnecessary additions:

Plasma cooled SM? - New passive cooling

Separated cooling loop

Collecting gases produced by crystal

Creating pluoxium without putting CO2 in SM chamber

That's pretty much it, its hard to come up with anything original, we have only these much types of pipes and gases

Spawned canisters hold gas at temperature 20 °C ( 293.15 K), as said I lost starting measurement but it was 200 something kPa. Temperatures stabilised super fast and they stayed at the same levels as you can see on pictures, these freezers were an absolute overkill and they were more than up to the task of keeping things cool. While running standard SM set up its not unusual to have 30-40K difference every second here it was just few K.

I understand where you are coming from with this but that's why I had it running for some time because I know things may change over time (especially if cooling is not efficient and you precooled mix before firing emitters, fired them up and assumed that because thing didn't blow up in 10 seconds its all good but temperature may be slightly rising up over time). But that wasn't a case here. As you can see it clearly between last 3 screens, especially first and last of them, we ended that measurement at pretty much exact temperature of 306 K and pressure dropped dramatically

[–]4rchibald[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was thinking about it but first of all, I forgot to mention it was all done on TG code, so no crazy gases, don't know if any codebase has hydrogen but here we're especially limited with possibilities. Oxygen is the only one that comes to mind but its levels were very low. As you can see in that link with pipe measurements they are staying at around 19 moles, which is super low. Just moment ago I was playing on delta station, ran standard set up with N2O and there were 97.32 moles of oxygen (But it was ran on 5 emitters, pretty sure that if we would fire only 2 oxygen levels would be closer to these 19).

Also we need to remember what temperatures we are talking about. From the same measurement list " Temperature: 3.72 °C (276.87 K) " 3.7 degrees C, that's just silly temperature, even at crystal itself we had between 290 and up to 310 when ran on heaters so between 16.8 and 36 degrees C, while average temperature on station is 20 degrees C. I would accept some kind of gas decay if we first of all had gases that it can decay into and we would be talking about more extreme temperatures, not up to 15 degrees above average

Toolbox Station Strictness by SinnerEliminator in SS13

[–]4rchibald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I remember Qoazi, there was also another admin with name starting at D (as you can tell I'm not good with remembering names). Don't know how much active Falaskian is now but when I was playing there (during sethtide) he was playing pretty much when I was, I avoided him only when I was playing very early or very late...but I don't think I should be playing on server on which I need to avoid someone from staff. I'm really sad about it because I really liked rest of admins and players that were there, I remember one guy named Jimbo something, he started playing not long before me but he shared all his knowledge, its because of him that I learned basics of engineering (his behaviour actually inspired me to go on Beestation every time I couldn't play on toolbox because of Falaskian being online just to teach people, since it was a tide and nobody knew anything, and Falaskian was online at the same time I jumped into routine when I was pretty much only explaining how to set up SM every round, multiple rounds per day, for 2 weeks or so)

Toolbox Station Strictness by SinnerEliminator in SS13

[–]4rchibald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's him. I'm on discords of few other servers and topic of Toolbox came up few times (as it does with every server since people wanna know what is a good place to play), bad admins and Falaskian in particular was mentioned each time so its not just my experience. And trust me I'm not some problematic player that's pushing rules and admins patience to the limit, I'm pretty much all about building some autistic projects, which you can even see by checking posts i wrote on this subreddit or just doing good job, mostly as engineer, enjoying repairing destroyed departments and such. I honestly liked playing there, players were super cool and I liked their code, that they had things like pods, but what can I do in such situation. I won't be playing on server where I am unwelcome. I honestly never seen anything like that, not only in ss13 but in any game in general. Every time I joined and he was on I was pretty much attacked with bwoinks in 5 or 10 minutes, and yes, I indeed used word attacked. Never seen any admin anywhere with such antagonistic attitude, that finally pushed me away.

Toolbox Station Strictness by SinnerEliminator in SS13

[–]4rchibald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was playing there when I started few months back, they have an admin, don't remember his name, starts with F, he's quite well known and people keep complaining about him. He likes to abuse his power and creates some metagrudges. I slowly was going to other servers to avoid him and after some time completely stopped playing on Toolbox. When people who want to just calmly play, work on their projects and even have most traitors disabled because its not for them avoid your server because of an admin something's not right. He kept bwoinking me about literally anything, especially SM delams (since our first confrontation was because of mistake I made, this one i don't hide, was still learning but I caught the mistake and fixed it later on), even if I was on other side of station or in that round played in completely different department (and it wasn't even like 'Do you know what happened to SM' but straight up 'Why did you do it' and when asked why he is bwoinking me instead of checking logs and asking people who are near it or even at that department he kept straight up saying about my incompetence or stupidity), getting in a fight, both as attacker or victim always resulted in 20-30 minutes of bwoinks when I had to pull all the logs and explain why did I crit guy who broke to my department and attacked me with toolbox.

I actually stopped playing there quite quickly but I know the other guy who started just before I did and kept playing longer, it escalated to the point when that admin was making himself malf AI few rounds in the row and killing that guy at round start (he was usually playing as detective so locking his office and siphoning all air out.

I would stay away from that server, that admin is super toxic yet his position there is strong (not sure if he's not a host which explains why he's untouchable)
