Subpanel question by Few_Scratch_3261 in AskElectricians

No sense in committing electrical travesties! It's good to know I can scratch the subpanel for now.

I am curious though. If I do plan on getting a generator (Generac) would that change things in your mind?

Good to know. I had several electricians out to take a look and make suggestions. Not one of them mentioned using a tandem setup. They were all eager to put in a sub....I am now questioning them.

Oh. I was replying based on my observation that there is only one dead plate left where a new breaker can go. Is your comment based on the fact you can use tandem breakers off of each circuit?

Thank you for the comment. My basement is unfinished now and runs the length of the house, so access is easy enough though the joists to all areas of the house. I will definitely relocate items I want to run on to the subpanel. Great suggestion.

We do get crazy weather here so if the subpanel is not nearby, I will put surge protectors on both panels.

I am not familiar with tandem breakers. I need to research more to understand the use case of this versus a sub panel. I plan to reno my unfinished basement space in future and a few bathrooms and a home office with networking gear. I am in a new home and the panel is nearly maxed already. This is what led me in this direction initially.

The positioning of the box directly under the drain on the floor of the cabinet. I worry that being the lowest point, moisture (from anywhere) may enter. The gunk on the box to me looks like corrosion where the metal has been oxidizing. Am I way off here?

I spoke to my GC about this situation and she told me that cement board it is old school because before they didn't have this material, and green drywall is much lighter and more durable also but just in case we put on top water proof coat of redguard.

I think I disagree with some points in what she says based on what I have learned here. Is Kerdi superior to Redgard in your opinion?

Very insightful analysis u/Fixturefanatic very grateful to you. I need to speak to my contractors ASAP, but before I do, could you please link me to the type of Kerdi that would work in this application? The Kerdi membrane I have seen typically is for an underlayment flooring. Schluter makes a Kerdi prodcut but I cannot be certain if this is the proper one to get...

Use wonderboard how? As an alternate to the green board? Thanks for your reply!

Kerdi membrane over it

Thanks for the reply. So your recommendation is to put Kerdi membrane over the green board?

Are you sure you want to use MR drywall and not wonderboard or an equivalent?

Hmm, I confess I am ignorant on the subject. Please share what you know - is the MR drywall an inferior product as compared to MR drywall? Does it offer better waterproofing protection?

What is this pink/red stuff? My shower naturally leaks when it’s turned off. Is there something in the water? by Peepernumber5 in HomeMaintenance

I believe the other posters are off the mark on this one... (@IrishAndy1 is spot on)

Iron is more of a burnt orange color. This looks to be microbial in nature. Serratia marcescens (S. marcescens) is an opportunistic pathogen than comes from the soil and can flourish whenever there is a constant supply of water around. It forms the characteristic red/pink bacterial colonies which I believe you are seeing here. You can and should clear this up with cleaning your tube with bleach, but they will return unless you fix the leaky faucet.

Opportunistic pathogens are definitely not harmless. Let's say you have a small cut on your foot and have a compromised immune system, and step into the tub. They will happily enter your bloodstream and.....you get the picture I hope!
