Hi Jimmy. I have enjoyed your shows and your YouTube videos. Here is my question: Often your videos are posted on Reddit, and they get these 2 types of responses:

  1. Wow, what he is making is pretty cool.

  2. Wow, he is insanely unsafe how he makes things. He does not practice shop safety, and routinely uses tools in ways that they aren't intended (which also means unsafely).

How do you respond to the second type of opinion? Do you think your videos set a bad example? If not, why not?

Honestly, I don't give two shits either way. You are an artist, and you do what you want. I just always wondered if you had these types of reactions before, and what you thought of them.

Keep up the good work. And, by the way, tell Nick Offerman I said hi when you see him. He doesn't know who I am at all, but as a huge fan it makes me feel cool to know I can act like I do. Tell him his book was a fun read.

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 14 points15 points  (2 children)

i ignore the safety trolls , if i could watch everyone in their shop i could see all the various things we all do that could be unsafe. i believe skate videos are do more damage to americas' youth then any thing i could do with a tool. a severed finger is nothing compared to a compound leg fracture. thank you for the love , ill tell nick

[–]beccabee88 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How much of the safety is compromised due to trying to show how things are done?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

not much as you see is how i do…

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

jason ellis from sirius?

[–]jasonellis 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Nope. Just a coincidence. Oddly enough, the only reason I know who that famous Jason Ellis is, is because someone on Reddit a couple of years ago asked me the same question.

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hah col thank you !

[–]davidrafe 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Jimmy, youre a huge inspiration! just wondering though, what do you think of your nephew matt's work? Also did you make the cabinets for your new kitchen? I remember seeing them in the background of your shop in a video. Keep up the awesomeness!

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

matt didn't decide to make stuff un till a bit later then me so he is learning very fast and i teach him all the time. i did build th cabinets , no video bc i thought it would be boring and pictures were enough whit oak THANK YOU !!

[–]Kimbo98 6 points7 points  (1 child)

What would you say are your most used tools, and what tools would you advise buying for a beginner woodworker? I love your videos and your designs are inspirational!

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you ! the bandsaw is the most used by me, table saw is most important for beginner , and maybe chop saw… jig saw …. scroll saw… all used on craig list

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

going to step away for few hours but ill check back later tonight THANK YOU ALL FOR THE support and love!

[–]Chiselperch 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Do you sleep under your work bench , or at all?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

about 5 hours a night , never slept in the shop believe it or not..

[–]Schoffleine 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Hrm...I crawled onto my workbench once after a hand planing session. Piled a bunch of shavings (maple) up there out of curiosity and it was comfortable. You should try it.

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

haha!

[–]tomc_nola 4 points5 points  (3 children)

whats your career path leading to where you are now? previous jobs? did you go to college or just start working straight out of high school?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

BFA from art school , toy business , tv, now just a maker and youtber … TV meetings all time for crap ideas, one day something will fit , i prefer to make videos my self then with 50 people.

[–]guywhoburpsfarts 4 points5 points  (1 child)

[–]Dr_Solfeggio 2 points3 points  (4 children)

How are there 619k subscribers to /r/DIY and currently only 26 upvotes and 173 comments in Jimmy Diresta's AMA. Jimmy Fuckin' Diresta! And you call yourselves DIYers... smh...

(just humorous sarcasm, guys) (and I don't think his middle name really is "Fuckin.'")

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

thank you for that love!

[–]jwatson1978 2 points3 points  (5 children)

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

MAKE is a huge help form my audience, i love MAKE and their mission.

[–]BSTRuM 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hi jimmy! A big fan of you from TURKEY. I just want to say you live my dream life ;) I wish i could visit you in the shop. Why do you paint most of your tools to white such as drill, hammer etc.

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]viveksaikia 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Hi Jimmy, Let me start by saying that I totally admire your work and your creations. I have literally watched every video of yours and eagerly waiting for the next one on YouTube.

My question is Have you been recently approached by the TV channels for any new series like Dirty Money? Will love to see a show like that!

Oh and yes, I love your Submariner as well ;)

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i get offers from production companies to pitch shows often , but the only thing i want to do is a show like my youtbe videos and the tv biz will not take it seriously.. so i keep my options open. thank you on the watch it is real despite what the trolls think , it is about 14 years old was a gift

[–]Charlie_Kong 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Hey there Jimmy.

I posted on your Youtube page a while back asking if you could make a video showing lots of little tips and tricks for good building practices. Lots of people don't know all the tricks of the trade like counter-sinking screw holes or spinning dowels when you cut them to get them straight.

Any hopes of a video like that? I know your style is not to talk all that much, but we don't mind hearing you in a video or two.

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 6 points7 points  (4 children)

thank you this is a good idea and i will def make one ,, ill begin to collect some of my ideas and make up a video ! love this idea thank u!

[–]tomc_nola 2 points3 points  (3 children)

how much freedom do your clients give you? if a client is very specific about what he/she wants, do you consider it an easy job or a hindrance on your artistic abilities?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

as they get to know me, they trust me to get it right… the real picky people don't get a call back.

[–]tomc_nola 4 points5 points  (1 child)

cool. by the way your show is f-in awesome!

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

THANK YOU!!

[–]freeseasy 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Hey Jimmy, couple of questions.

  1. Where do you get inspiration for your builds

  2. What's happened with many of your smaller projects, are they things for yourself or are they for customers.

  3. Any memorable builds?

  4. Is the printing press still in use?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

inspiration comes from every where trash museums , flea markets …i keep what ever is not for a client, ill hod a show a maker fair one day printing press under my covered porch upstate ny , ill print this summer tx u!

[–]rebeccaapov 2 points3 points  (3 children)

What's your brother and Rat Face up to?

[–]jwatson1978 2 points3 points  (0 children)

his nephew has his own youtube channel he and john released a video redoing a closet recently.

https://www.youtube.com/user/MrMattdiresta

[–]freeseasy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think it's Rat Boy, not Rat Face.

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

mat and john are now in cliforina and do the melrose flea market every sunday … they make stuff from the trash and rustic style furniture

[–]BSTRuM 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Diresta, what is your most prized creation

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

[–]INDUNAart 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Seen the Machete and Looking glass, is there anywhere we can see the House upstate. I make stuff not unlike yourself. If you are ever in Toronto Canada I would be happy to show you some kickass shops and places for picking. Here is something I am proud of: https://vimeo.com/20540056

[–]timpaslay 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I consider you my biggest inspiration or role model. Who would you say has influenced you the most?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Paul cox and Indian Larry, DaVinci, Edison , whorhall , jessie james, richard serria chamberlin... may more

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tim!!!!!!! hi there

[–]dbmeister 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Was wondering if you would put together a book on the thought process /principles that goes into creating things, like what works together, what doesn't, etc. I know you have a background in arts, so it would be cool if you could distill some of those concepts for a noob.

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

one day , i would need help with that writing is difficult for me

[–]BSTRuM 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Last question, can you make us a set of gargoyles to watch your building?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

good idea ill ad to the list

[–]MarcusSciberras 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Ok, last one, Mr. DiResta, in several videos of yours, you use a rather odd black marker / pen with a long nose. Can we know what it's called? Looks very unique.

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fast cap long nose pattern marker

[–]KIT_CLOUD 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Hey, Jimmy big fan. I was wondering if I ever make it back to New York can I drop by your shop and see what you are working on?

Would you ever do another TV series If you have the chance?

Dirty Money was great by the way.

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

come any time, yes if the right project and right people, tv is not simple or that creative… thank you !!!

[–]8BitNed 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Hey Jimmy it's Jack from Florida I was curious about how your doing a ted talk came about? I really like what Ted does and I think it's great that you're going to be apart of it.

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

my cousin jack?.. solomon shector westchester high school asked me to be apart of their ted x event

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

it was fun , hope to do big TED one day

[–]troymcklure 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Jimmy, thanks for the AMA! Big fan.

I am visiting NYC for the first time the weekend of July 11-13th. Would you mind if I picked up one of those sweet stencils in person at your shop? :)

Thanks again.

-Wes

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Thanks! I will definitely take you up on that. I will tweet you or Facebook message you when it gets closer to the visit (to setup whatever time is convenient for you)

Thanks again!

[–]ShitRandyHates 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Hi Jimmy! Seen all your videos, love your work- I've often told people I wanna be you when I grow up (I'm 36). Two questions: where do you get your ideas, and how do you know Nick Offerman? Thanks for everything you do!!!

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

haha Thank you i want to grow up too, i am 47! .. i meet nick in summer of 07 he worked with my brother on American Body shop

[–]ShitRandyHates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome, thanks again! I've learned so much from your videos, and I hope you keep making them!

[–]Blackdavid 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Where can i find all the episodes of dirty money and hammered? Also, ever thought of making videos more frequently? I am lost if i dont see your video.really, i love watching only your videos of diy and i have already watched all the dirty money and hammered videos on youtube available. Do you mind sending me a link or something to watch them? Also planning on filming more of that? Sorry for that much questions, i hooe you will answer me!

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]Shurgosa 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I assume you discover things lying around the city in junk piles from time to time. What is the most crazy valuable or sought after item you ever snatched up from a junk pile for free?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nothing super valuable, but few very good useful tools , hand tools drill press band saw , when people want it out in nyc it goes on the street!

[–]twitonreddit 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Has anybody ever fallen down the entrance to your workshop?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

hahaha just me! few times .

[–]maker1706 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Hello Jimmy, Big fan, I've watched all of your youtube videos numerous times, and find the your editing very relaxing and mesmerizing.

Two quick questions, how do you like your shop bot? We had a 4x8 in my college wood shop that I fell in love with. The possibilities are endless. I've considered building my own cnc machine because it seems to more cost effective for a diyer. Was this ever an option for you?

Also I've only been to NYC once and made sure to go to the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market. I've never been more disappointed. Lots of Chum and no Jimmy Diresta. Any other good stops to make next time i'm in NYC?

Keep up the great work!

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

next time you come to my shop!! a close friend was the manager of the market , he is gone now so i stopped going because of the new management. and john and mat went to LA. LOVE the shop bot it is changing my life, i got the 18x24 to ge started , looking forward to the bigger unit one day … prefer to buy complex things like this… need the customer support !!

[–]khqzxe 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Jimmy, I've watched all of your videos (most more than once) and each episode of Dirty Money and Hammered. Thanks for posting the videos on make as I look forward to it every other week.

Do you have any plans to sell any of your work online? I would love to have a Diresta stenciled creation on my shelf some day. Maybe castings, belt buckles, etc that could be produced in a reasonable quantity, like the skull ring which I think you sold some of before?

Thanks!!

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you , yes planning always but it is not profitable at the moment , i give away most of the things i often get contacted and sell things, you can email me thank you for the support!

[–]twitonreddit 2 points3 points  (1 child)

What is it that you teach at college? Is it satisfying?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i teach 3d design and inventing at nyc School OF Visual Arts yes i love it!! 21 years

[–]EmbroideredLexicon 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Jimmy, my boyfriend and I live a few blocks from your LES spot. OK if we say hi sometime? Not anytime soon. We're not stalkers, really!

[–]EmbroideredLexicon 2 points3 points  (3 children)

We are big fans of Dirty Money. We especially love it every time you tell your brother that he looks like Rosie O'Donnell. :) Bustin' chops!

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Thank you !!! he lost lots of weight!

[–]flippertyflip 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Will dirty money ever be renewed? Any plans for anything similar?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no plans Discovery dropped the show after several people were fired internally and rating had nothing to do with it… we search for a new home thank you !!!

[–]thejevans 2 points3 points  (10 children)

I made a desk a while back, but afterward almost immediately fell away from making. It was your videos that launched me back into woodworking when I found them at the start of this year. The way you film your projects is just too good not to watch. I've since built a few projects, but I no longer can go a day without thinking about new ones. My mind thanks you, my wallet does not, haha.

Who are your favorite makers to watch on youtube?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

keep making and you'll always have something to do and money to earn

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 6 points7 points  (8 children)

[–]thejevans 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I subscribe to both. Good to know I'm following the right people! If your ever in the DC area, I know tons of people here would love to do a meet and greet!

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

thank you !! if you do a mini make fair ill come

[–]flippertyflip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1 for matthais

[–]AstroNotBad 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Hi Jimmy, I absolutely love your work! I watch all your MAKE videos, and wonder if you would ever release full-length (edited down, but no high speed sections) for those of us die-hard fans? I just really like watching the process, including the tool use!

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i am currently working on a small file cabinet for a client (movie) , i was going to make it 12-14 mins, less slower .. next week but in time ill do that more often Thank you !!

[–]BSTRuM 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I should have just added these to the first. Do you find that your underground laboratory has ample space? Do you have any other workshops? Are you limited to what you can build by said area?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

yes it is limiting i have 40 acres upstate ny , i get up there in the warmer months, planing on building a big shop there one day soon

[–]Arkburn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me know when you need labor hands, I'm living near upstate at this time and I'm a big fan, would love to work with you or beside you on any project.

[–]tobim 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hi, Have you had any special training? (i know u talked about art school in hammered) or are you self taught

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

self taught mostly but i seek out learning from all over , youtube friends … etc,….

[–]MadMattTweets 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hey Jimmy what age did you start? What was the first thing you can remember that inspired you to say yup I'm going to build all sorts of crazy stuff?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

since i was 7-8… my dad was the start.. then mtv started in 80-1-2 the music videos was a big inspiration then … my guitars fr instance..

[–]davidrafe 1 point2 points  (1 child)

oh, also what ever happened to the giant bandsaw from hammered?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it is in storage on long island with tons of other tools , ill make a big shop soon it will all come together

[–]subshiny 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Who are some people youre subscribed to on yt? and how often do you go through bandsaw blades haha

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i like matais weindel. chucke2009, welding tips and tricks…. not too many blades, i am gentle with my blades ..

[–]Krizsanscustoms 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hey Jimmy What are your shop hours? thanks

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]ldsscg 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hi Jimmy !

Can you get me a list of the top 5 tools everybody must have !

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

band saw , table saw , drill screw gun, drill press, jig saw

[–]timpaslay 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Do you enjoy the actual making of a video (shooting, lighting, editing) or is it just part of the process that allows you to do what you really love, making things and sharing that with people.

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

i love the craft of movie making, and the build… equally

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it is a puzze to make it all work with OUT talking

[–]Bobby_beans 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm a blacksmith and am having difficulty selling my work. Fortunately I don't need the money as a primary living recourse as I'm 17. How would you suggest I grow my customer pool. Also I'm quite interested in metal casting, I can get the white metal casting alloy but what type of silicon should I use for casting high temperature meterials I.E. Steel, bronze, copper. Keep doing what you're doing, you're awesome.
Many thanks, Steven

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

start by selling to friends and their friends…. there is lot to chose from in silicones, ask my friends at complete sculptor sculpt.com… but first thought the temp for those is too high for anything besides sand and ceramic..

[–]MarcusSciberras 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Hi Mr. DiResta, always love your work. Do you ever plan on exploring the world? Say, Australia for example?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

i have been there Australia in 2000, spent 18 years going to china and hong kong for toy manufacture .. europe several times mexico few times canada few times … egypt soon!

[–]twitonreddit 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What sort of toys were you manufacturing?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

mostly craft toys, and gurgling guts was my product

[–]dbmeister 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If you don't write a book, can you recommend some, or some resources. Thanks!

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i would writhe a book one day, maybe some one can recommend… last book i read bout making was nicks book..

[–]AlessandroLandi 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Would you please suggest me a nice project to do?It would be a big honour for me

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

make soothing you can use .. mail box , big house, book shelf , bed frame , bench, chair , stool , frame, shoe shelf...

[–]AlessandroLandi 2 points3 points  (1 child)

fine, I'll make a picnic table with benches

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

make it and mod it… make it your own

[–]twitonreddit 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Can you make a living doing YouTube videos.

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not yet but i still love to make a good video

[–]tomc_nola 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How many projects do you have in the works at any given time?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

5-10 projects...… 5 movies at the moment needing to be finished

[–]guywhoburpsfarts 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How did you get into guitar making?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MTV… i wanted to make after seeing steve via first flame guitar

[–]Shurgosa 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What is the oldest, most heavily used/most treasured hand or power tool you have? and do you have a crazy story about it?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in the videos it seems the hand band saw … on dirty money the blade snapped while john was using it he got scared… not sure if it made the edit

[–]89sh 1 point2 points  (4 children)

any advice for a 18 year old aspiring designer/maker? p.s your business card is badass!

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Thank you , just keep making and learning from your mistakes !!! listen to adam savage 10 commandments for makers ….. Experiment,

[–]89sh 2 points3 points  (2 children)

You and him are massive role models in my life, thanks for answering!

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

THANK YOU ! for supporting the videos!

[–]Portr8 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Have you ever considered building your own bandsaw like Mathias Wandell?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i love mathias but for me to make a complex thing that already exist is not my goal, i prefer to make all new things. i do modify tools often to suit my needs. but to start from scratch is a wast of my time

[–]MarcusSciberras 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Oh, before I loose the chance, would you ever considered a Workshop Tour?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

come any time

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

or did you mean video ?

[–]KIT_CLOUD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would love to see a video tour of your shop.

[–]flippertyflip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For us not in nyc a video would be great.

[–]FallosLudo 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Is that small hatch the only entrance to your shop? If so, is it not darn inconvenient when working with bigger stuff?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (6 children)

yes there is a center hall fr bigger stuff but my neighbors hate me.. one day ill work upstate in big shop

[–]KIT_CLOUD 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I just put Dirty Money on and noticed you have a Church of the Subgenius Pirate flag.

  1. That's Awesome!
  2. Where can I get one. (I guess I could screen print it my self though.)

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

nick offerman gave it to me!! hahaha

[–]twitonreddit 1 point2 points  (2 children)

On one of the Dirty Money shows you made a coffin/drinks cabinet and decorated it with some pieces from a spin casting mould you bought. Do you do much spin casting.

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

that was the only time .. i do simple pour casting only

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we got the molds from the antique shop with the coffin .. not sure if it was in the episode , honestly didn't watch the shows too closely ...

How long did it take to reupholster the love seat? I really enjoyed that video, would like to try it.

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]twitonreddit 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Do you play music in the background when your working? What sort of stuff are you into?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

evry thing from country to heavy metal , lots of sirius , howard stern.

[–]Dr_Solfeggio 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Mr. Diresta, Thanks for all of your inspiring work!

I dare not say "impossible" to a guy who "can make anything," but was there ever a challenge that you just said, "maybe someday, but I can't... yet"?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

my space is limiting , want to make a custom car and MC one day .. till then it is in the dungeon for me...

[–]EmbroideredLexicon 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Ugh. Is it over? Did Jimmy leave already?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i am here editing a movie

[–]nothingWolf 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hi Jimmy! Your physical problem solving skills are amazing and inspiring, and I really love your creative use of tools (like that video where you shape a board with a circular saw).

One question: how did you injure your finger? (In one episode of dirty money your brother makes fun of you for it).

And one invitation: I work in fabrication as well, if you are ever in Atlanta I'd love to buy you a coffee and give you a tour of our shop, it has lots of fun toys (ahem) tools -waterjet, cnc routers, laser cutter, etc- PM me.

Thanks for doing this AMA!

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you !!! would love to see the shop! i may pass through in july on the way to NOLA , i did sever my pinky in March 2010 , didn't turn off saw between adjustments and the work got tossed in the blade it hit my other arm and i hunched forward and my hand hit the running blade , pinky hanging by centimeter of skin…oops. in the videos you can see a scar where a ring would be on the left pinky.

Hi Jimmy, Im a big fan. love your shows and youtube channel. you are a really entertaining guy to listen to and watch. my question is why did you choose to make your youtube videos in the format that they are (no talking just sped up builds), as apposed to like your tv shows are (instructional)?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i set a style apart from other youtbers BC i don't listen to them , audio off.. scrubbing through searching for the action. always….some videos are 10 minutes of the same shot with a voice behind the camera, this is just insane to me … ill talk some day soon. may be on tv soon. Thank you !

[–]Dutchman562 1 point2 points  (2 children)

jimmy, I just recently found you youtube channel via r/DIY and has re-inspired me to be more creative in my day to day work. I am a General Contractor and remodel kitchens, bathrooms, etc. Your work is extremely creative but only notice you building smaller things like furniture, trinkets and toys. I was wondering if you have/would ever do anything on a larger scale like building homes, rooms etc.

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

yes i will, the "bite size" projects are for youtbe of course… to keep a schedule with make and my self.. the big projects are more tedious to keep track of. but i have some longer projects logged. but the "ARC" for the video is not there in some cases … but yes i plan to do longer stuff Thank you !!

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BTW my day to day work is all custom stuff and built ins .. like the "Credenza" on my channel .. but most of it is boring decorator stuff so i don't show it…only the good stuff.

[–]zeroair 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What is the favorite thing you've made?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

some of the guitars and anything in brass

[–]Zachrjeffrey 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Do you recommend buying cheaper tools or top of the line?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

i always go for good old used stuff… if the egyptians could do what they did with out festool , so can i… my Domino jointer was a gift from my gf.. my only festool and dewalt because i like the color, i do not have a deal with dewalt the tool box video was one off project.

[–]blknj 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hi Jimmy, meeting you at Maker Faire NY last September was highlight of my trip. Are you planning to attend again this year? Any idea what you might br making if you are?

Thanks for sharing so many of your great projects with us.

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THANK YOU !!! ill be there in nyc , i had to skip sanmateo this year due to work load , i was thinking of displaying the several project from youtbe this year.. Thank you and please say hi again!

[–]INDUNAart 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Thanks for doing this and for all your videos on YT. Do you have an new favorite material, adhesive or technique?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Thank you for supporting the videos! i like brass and welding lots, my metal facilities are limited but one day ill have full fab lab for metal

[–]ubersimba 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Oh man I hope I havn't missed this! I just saw your link on your fb. I am a huge fan obviously. Just one question, have you ever considered travelling and hosting workshops around the world?

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

yes several people ask i say yes and nothing happens. what do you got?

[–]ubersimba 2 points3 points  (1 child)

yeaaaahh! diresta replied! I don't have anything to put it in place unfortunately, i only asked cuz i'd definitely buy a ticket to watch you make something in person, if you were ever here (Dubai). Also, this one time you retweeted one of my tweets about you knowing Nick offerman and I was super excited for like a week after that!

You're a genius man, and Thank you so much for being so awesome!

EDIT: Punctuation

[–]flippertyflip 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Your workshop is a great example of creative space in a busy city. I'm hoping to get something similar one day here in London. How did you find it? Is it expensive? Where did you work from previously? Great videos. Big fan.

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thank you ! my buddy rented the storage s[ace in the same spot 11 years ago, when i looked it saw the space i have avail, the whole basement is now in use.. it is rather cheep for the city , that is why i put up with it all this time… before the real-estate boom in 2000 we had a big garage building around the block , my rent quadrupled so we had to get out.. Thank you for watching!

[–]jayefuu 1 point2 points  (6 children)

No questions, just wanted to say I love your work. It's great so see someone inspiring so many people.

EDIT: Just remembered I needed to say thanks for the styrene ruler box video. I bought some styrene and model glue to make a small box for electronics last week. Worked well, but perhaps I need to find a different glue, this one seemed to take a while to set.

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Thank you for the love! use methlenechloride glue .. some times called plastic weld. works the best for styrene! thank you !!

[–]INDUNAart 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I see your videos as an art form, equal and occasionally surpass the objects being made in someway. They inspire me to document as a fabricator as much as your great projects. As a teacher, have you ever thought of sharing your thoughts about that aspect of your work? I think that could be your biggest contribution as an artist.

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Thank You !! yes i often give advice on video: David Mamet said on editing "get in late and get out early" this is my mantra. too many youtubers think that are talking to space aliens and describe way too much detail… boring…

and you can see this from MF last year http://fora.tv/2013/05/19/DIRESTAs_Jimmy_DiResta_I_Make_on_Youtube

SUBSCRIBED!

[–]jtrain007 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Jimmy: I am beginner carpenter on the side and I'm constantly frustrated by woodworkers all of the internet making projects with such precision that I don't feel like it is attainable. Machines are all within .0001 inch tolerances and edges are all PERFECTLY square. I simply cannot get all joints, panels and edges to this level of perfection - especially over 2, 3, 4 ft cabinets/projects. Do you make projects with this same precision? Or do you leave room for a little error and "manipulation"? How do I get good like you?!!!

[–]jimmydirestaJimmy DiResta[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i fee the same way ! , i am little more sloppier then the "typical wood worker machinist" but the more you do it the better you get at it, the same as any thing… practice and experimentation …Thank you !

My 2nd anniversary is coming up, what are some creative things i can do for my honey with cotton?
